Education Update

Parents, Do You Have These Shabbat Service Dates on Your Calendar?
Shir Hadash teachers want our students to be familiar with and comfortable in our Shabbat and holiday worship services. We recommend that students and their families should attend at least two worship services during the school year. We have some great opportunities for the children to participate in (and enjoy) services. We are offering several Shabbat services that will be geared specifically to—and led by—our students. Our teachers and Rabbi Eitan will prepare the students to lead portions of the service.
  • Friday, November 16: Shabbat services will be led by grades 4 through 7
  • Friday, March 1, 2013: Shabbat services will be led by grades K through 3
  • Friday, May 17, 2013: Shabbat services will be led by our Havayah
Make sure to put these dates in your calendar, these services give our students a chance for them to show "their stuff."

Service Requirements for B’nai Mitzvah Students
Students are required to attend six services in the year prior to bar/bat mitzvah service. At least one of these services should be a Shabbat service, and the other can be a holiday service such as Sukkot (Friday, October 5), Simchat Torah (Sunday, October 7), Lights & Miracles on Hanukkah, Purim, and Pausing in the Wilderness.

Madrichim Update
Thank you to our super madrichim who helped make the first two weeks of Sunday School so exciting for our students. Your presence at school on Sundays helps the teachers, students, and parents. Keep up the good work. Please remember to let your teacher, Emily AND Carole know if you will be absent on any Sunday: 1 e-mail, 3 people. There will be no Sunday School on October 7, but please join us for Sukkot and Simchat Torah services this weekend. See you back at Sunday school on October 14. Please watch your e-mail for notice of the first madrichim meeting.
Thanks!

Kol HaKavod to Three of Our Teens
Congratulations to David Anes, Dasha Kopulsky, and Sam Mostow on their nominations for the Chicago Jewish Teen Leadership Committee. Nominees are selected based on their commitment to and leadership in the Chicago Jewish community. All three of our teens have been invited to serve on the Jewish Community Teen Leadership Program based on their exceptional contributions to the Chicago Jewish community.

The Chicago Jewish Community Teen Leadership Committee will consist of outstanding high school juniors and seniors representing different high schools, youth groups, and streams of Judaism. Committee members will have a central role in the development and planning of community-wide events, and will additionally receive leadership training and a certificate of achievement, participate in focus groups, meet with community lay and professional leaders, and serve as ambassadors to the Jewish teen community in their high schools, congregations, and beyond.

We are so proud of our teens and look forward to hearing more from them throughout the year. Mazel tov!

Creative Worship & Ritual

Friday, October 5: Sukkot: Family and Community Shabbat Service, Sukkot Activity, and Pot Luck Oneg
Did you know that there is a Jewish prayer for rain? Well, our Shabbat Sukkot service will include that special prayer as well as readings and songs for the harvest festival. At this time of Jewish thanksgiving, we will honor and install our new Board members and then engage in a Sukkot art project for all ages. Help us welcome the mystical spirits of biblical leaders Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and others to our sukkah celebration. We will decorate and dedicate our Shir Hadash sukkah booth and enjoy our oneg treats outside under the stars—unless our prayers are answered and it rains! Services will be held at 7:30 p.m. at LCHS.

Sunday, October 7: Simchat Torah Pizza Dinner and Service
Please join us for a delightful evening as we dance around our Torahs. We will unfurl a Torah around the room and a few sections will be read. Most importantly we will read the end of the Torah and then start the cycle once again by reading the beginning, continuing a tradition that is thousands of years old. During the evening students who are new to our religious school will receive their miniature Torahs.

The festivities begin at 5 p.m. with a pizza and salad dinner. We will have regular, gluten free and milk free pizza. The cost is $7 per person. We will have taffy apples for the kids for the oneg! The event will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit, 30 Riverwoods Road, Lincolnshire. Can’t make it by 5? Come at 6 p.m. for the service and celebration.

To RSVP, click here to use the signup sheet. Please tell us how many people are in your group; how many regular, gluten free, or milk free people are in your group; what paper goods are you bringing; and whether you can come early for set up or stay for clean up. Also, let us know if you will be able to help take the sukkah down.

RSVP by Friday, October 5. Please bring a check made out to Shir Hadash or mail it to Melanie Andes, 945 Creek Bend Drive, Vernon Hills, IL 60061. For more information, contact Melanie at (847) 913-9198 or fmandes@comcast.net.

Yom Kippur family services
High Holiday Highlights
The High Holidays were so wonderful and moving this year at Shir Hadash. Highlights included the lyrical interpretive dance on Erev Rosh Hashana; the dramatic acting out of a dialogue between the storyteller and Sarah while Abraham took Isaac to the mountain to be sacrificed; the lovely melodies of Lahaka; the fun of blowing the shofar; the sense of pride inclusiveness to our group aliyot tradition; and our well attended and engaging family services.

There are a lot of moving pieces to putting together a smooth and seamless High Holidays. Next week, we will include a detailed thank you to the individuals who contributed their time, effort, skills, grace, voices, sweat, blood, and tears to our fabulous High Holiday services. For now, thank you to everyone who participated.

“Ushpizin – Welcoming Mystical Guests into Our Sukkah”

Dear Friends,

The Festival of Sukkot continues through next weekend and concludes on October 7-8 with the festivals of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah.  Sukkot is our Jewish harvest festival, the forerunner of America’s Thanksgiving holiday.  It is also a deeply spiritual and mystical holiday as it embodies all the elements of Hachnasat Orchim – Welcoming guests into our homes.

At Sukkot time, we invite guests into our Sukkah to relax, enjoy and even eat a meal.  That’s how we demonstrate that we are actually living outside for the week in solidarity with our ancestors, who lived in Sukkot for forty years as they traveled from Egyptian…

SHOP Shir Hadash

SHOP for Sukkot and Simchat Torah
Prepare for Sukkot and Simchat Torah at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, Caputo’s, Dominick’s, Fanny May, Jewel, Garden Fresh, Mariano’s, Sunset, Target, Walmart/Sam’s, and Whole Foods.

Annual SHOP Orders Are Now Payable By Credit Card
If every family purchases $400 a month in grocery, gas, or other cards, we can earn over $15,000. Shir Hadash believes that an inability to pay should never be a barrier to membership or education. Special consideration is given to our members when circumstances prevent them from meeting any part of their financial commitment. To offset this consideration and to make up the budgetary deficit, the Board is asking that all members consider making a monthly commitment to using shop gift cards. Purchasing SHOP gift cards helps the shul raise much needed funds without spending any more money than you already do for your regular expenses. A complete list of the many gift cards available through this program, along with the percentage the shul earns is available on our website. Orders can be picked up at Sunday school or the Shir Hadash office.
