THE RABBI’S CORNER

November 22-23, 2019 / 24 Heshvan 5780 / Shabbat Chayei Sarah
Torah Portion: Genesis 23:1-25:18 / Haftarah Portion: I Kings 1:1-31

“Paying to Make Peace”

Dear Friends,

How much should we pay when buying an item?  As much as we love a good deal, is it fair to expect to pay less than expected?  On the other hand, is it fair to pay more than the market price?

In this week’s Torah portion, Abraham purchased a burial cave in a field near today’s Hebron in which Sarah would be laid to rest.  The Torah account goes into great detail explaining how much the Hittite seller was willing to give Abraham the cave at no cost.  Nevertheless, Abraham insisted on paying the full fair market price.  What was going on?

Two principles were in play. 1) Abraham wanted to make sure that his purchase of the cave would not be challenged by anyone.  Therefore, he insisted on paying full price so that no one could say that the seller was deceived. 2) The Hebrew word for “to pay” is “L’shalaym,” which is derived from the word “Shalom.”  Literally, it means to make peace between seller and buyer.  Thus, the Torah is telling us that both the seller and buyer should always come away from a deal feeling whole and at peace.

In our consumer economy, make sure that these two fundamental Jewish principles are operating in your buying and selling. “L’shalaym” is about paying a fair price in order to make peace amongst all the parties involved.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

MEMBERSHIP NEWS AND EVENTS

Sunday! Community Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration, November 24 -- The Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council, of which Shir Hadash is a member, unites for a Thanksgiving program at Temple Chai in Long Grove at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 24.  Light refreshments will follow the service.  Please bring non-perishable food donations to support area pantries.

Hanukkah Gift Sale -- We have a large pile of items left from the gift shop which will be put out for sale in the weeks leading up to Hanukkah.  This will replace the traditional Hanukkah bazaar we used to hold for students, as we are reluctant to give up instruction time for the kids to shop. But the items are very low-priced and students can shop before and after school. The table will be staffed during school hours on November 24, December 8, and December 15, as well as during the December 14 Hanukkah program and regular office hours.  We could use some volunteer help for the sales events, which would be a perfect project for any high school students who need volunteer hours. If you can offer any volunteer time, please contact admin@shir-hadash.org.

Book Club, December 19 -- At our next meeting we will be talking about The Lake on Fire, a novel by Rosellen Brown. The epic narrative follows 19th-century Jewish immigrants as they move from rural Wisconsin to industrialized Chicago at the time of the Columbian Exposition. Join us for a lively discussion at a member's home and bring a nosh to share! To RSVP and for location details, contact the office at admin@shir-hadash.org or (847)498-8218.

Follow Us on Facebook – Twice! Did you know there are two Shir Hadash FB resources? One is a private group for members only, with about 110 members at present. This is a great group to post questions or updates for members about Shir Hadash events, news and business. And then we have the Shir Hadash FB page, which is a public page with over 650 people following. The Shir Hadash page is a perfect group to share synagogue events, as well as community events, recipes, links to fun sites and other items in which you have a great interest. Please follow both and post accordingly! We appreciate your support of our growing, inclusive community.

SOCIAL ACTION
Holiday Gift Drive- New, Unwrapped Presents Welcomed until December 15 -- Not all children at Jewish Child and Family Services have a holiday sponsor, so Shir Hadash is having a toy drive to make sure every child receives a gift during the holidays. New, unwrapped presents can be left in the Shir Hadash lobby any time until December 15. Toys, puzzles, games, sports equipment, dolls, craft supplies, and other non-violent presents are appreciated. Please do not donate items that need batteries because many families can't afford replacement batteries. Email SocialActionSH@gmail.com or ask Lisa Burton Radzely if you have questions.

Sort, Shop the Donations, and Prepare Holiday Gift Packages for Children In Need- December 8 All Ages Welcome -- On December 8, 1pm-3pm, Shir Hadash members will go to JCFS Northbrook to sort and "shop" the holiday gift donations to fulfill children's wish lists, and then we'll get the packages ready for delivery. This project will fill the wish lists of unsponsored children, and we will get all children's gifts ready for delivery. Feel great knowing that you are helping children receive the present they were hoping to get. All ages welcome to participate, but children under 13 must be supervised by an adult. JCFS Northbrook is located at 255 Revere Dr. #200. Email SocialActionSH@gmail.com to register or to ask any questions.

Shir Hadash Shoppers Keep 77 People Warm This Winter!  This past Sunday, 11 Shir Hadashniks shopped for winter jackets, boots, and accessories for 77 people who needed assistance staying warm this winter. Using JUF Chanukah Coat Club funds, we bought a warm jacket, hat, gloves or mittens, snowpants, and snowboots for individuals in need who are clients at Jewish Child and Family Services in Buffalo Grove. JCFS received 763 assistance requests this winter, so the need is great across all JCFS locations. JUF Chanukah Coat Club distributes funds to other organizations as well.

JEWISH COMMUNITY EVENTS

Make a Donation to Keep Someone Warm This Winter, and Have a Hanukkah Card Sent to Announce your Gift -- JUF Chanukah Coat Club is a great way to help keep people warm this winter. For a donation of $18, a child receives a new, warm coat and accessories. Donations made in someone's honor can be acknowledged with a personalized Chanukah card announcing your gift. To ensure that cards are received in time for the holiday, send information and payment by December 2nd. Make a donation by clicking here.

THE RABBI’S CORNER
November 15-16, 2019 / 18 Heshvan 5780 /Shabbat Vayera
Torah Portion: Genesis 18:1-22:24 / Haftarah Portion: II Kings 4:1-37

“Hospitality”

Dear Friends,

In this week’s Torah portion, three weary travellers came within sight of Abraham’s tent.  The story tells how upon seeing the men, Abraham jumped up and ran towards them to invite them into his tent. We gave them a shady place to rest, washed their feet, and served them a hearty meal.

From this story we learn the important Jewish value of hospitality.  Furthermore, Abraham’s example teaches us to be zealous in our efforts to help those in need.  When possible, offer help even before we are asked for assistance.  Be kind and gracious when aiding others.

It’s a mitzvah – a righteous act!

Zay a mentsch – Be a good person.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

Final Week! Winter Warmth Drive: Gently-Used and New Winter Outerwear and Accessories, now through November 17 -- We are having a winter warmth drive for local families. Gently-used and new hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, jackets, snowpants, and snowboots are welcomed. They will be distributed to local families who need assistance staying warm this winter. This Sunday! Winter Warmth Shopping with JUF Funds- November 17, 10:00am-noon - We have the funding, but we need shoppers! JUF Chanukah Coat Club has given Jewish Child and Family Services funding to purchase jackets, mittens or gloves, hats, snowpants, and snowboots for their clients. JCFS needs volunteers to find the items in the store, and that's where you can help! We will go to the Wheeling Target on November 17, 10 am until 12 pm. It is a fulfilling experience to know that you are keeping a child warm this winter, and it's fun to shop for these items, especially since you aren't paying! Donations to JUF Chanukah Coat Club are welcomed to help fund this valuable program, and volunteer time as shoppers is vital to the program's existence. Email  SocialActionSH@gmail.com or talk with our Social Action Chair, Lisa Burton Radzely, to sign up to be a shopper or if you have questions.

Help the Bahamas -- Hurricane Dorian's impact on the Bahamas is staggering. Just as people around the world helped the US after Hurricane Katrina, it is now our turn to help the Bahamas.  There are multiple ways you can give tzedakah: leaving cash or a check in the tzedakah box near the prayer books, or by mailing a check or leaving one with the office. Checks should be made out to Jewish Federation Hurricane Dorian Relief Fund. 100% of collected funds will provide relief for those impacted by this disaster, with Federation absorbing all administrative costs.   Questions? Ask our Social Action Chair, Lisa Burton Radzely, or email socialactionsh@gmail.com.

JEWISH COMMUNITY EVENTS

Sunday! Global Day of Jewish Learning, November 17 -- Join Reconstructing Judaism on Sunday, November 17 online for a live-streamed talk with Rabbi David. A. Teutsch, Ph.D.  The Global Day of Jewish Learning is a project to unite Jewish communities across the world through study of our shared texts. This year’s Global Day theme is “Speaking Volumes”. From ancient arguments to modern meanings, from raising our voices to remaining silent, people the world over will explore how and why words matter.  Rabbi Teutsch's presentation at 12:00 p.m. CST, Feedback that Works: The Art of Tochecha, begins with what Rambam (Maimonides) says about the obligation to offer rebuke and what makes such conversations effective, considers some contemporary situations that need our feedback, and looks at how we overcome our internal resistance to addressing wrongdoing.  Click here to join the livestream at 12:00 p.m. CST on November 17.
Immigration: Then and Now, November 20 -- Adult Jewish Education Co-op (AJEC) invites you to an exploration of some of the key issues of immigration led by Dr. Joyce Witt.  What did our grandparents and great-grandparents have to deal with as they made their way to this country? What is different today, and how does Judaism teach us about the way immigrants should be treated? The presentation will be held at Temple Chai, 1670 Checker Road in Long Grove from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Admission is $18, cash or check; no preregistration required.

“The Land”

Dear Friends,
In this week’s Torah portion, Abraham is called upon by God to leave his home in Mesopotamia and go west to the land of Cana’an, which would become known as the land of Israel. The Hebrew word for “The Land” which God would show Abraham is “ha’aretz.” Ha’aretz has come to mean not just any piece of land, but rather The Land, the holy land, the Land of Israel.  That is why one of Israel’s leading newspapers is called “Ha’aretz.”  The title refers to only one area of land – The Land – our Jewish homeland.  In everyday Hebrew conversation, when talking about the land of Israel, one would refer to “Ha’aretz.”

Ha’aretz – The Land – is the homeland of the Jewish people.  It is where our Jewish foundations were laid, where our Biblical history took place. It is where Jews have lived continually from Abraham up to the present time.  It is the place to which we direct our prayers. It is the source of our Jewish inspiration for all Jews everywhere.

For those who have never been to Israel, I urge you to make plans and go visit soon.  Those who have visited already, go again.  It is a great and meaningful experience to walk in the footsteps of Abraham in The Land – Ha’aretz.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

SOCIAL ACTION
Help the Bahamas -- Hurricane Dorian's impact on the Bahamas is staggering. Thousands of homes were destroyed. As of September 22, at least 53 people are dead and more than 1,300 still missing—many likely swept to their deaths. The recovery process will be very slow, for the government has ordered no rebuilding for six months to "allow for recovery efforts and the removal of (billions of pounds of) storm debris."

There will be a collection bin in the lobby from October 20 through November 17. If you have any questions, please email SocialActionSH@gmail.com or ask our Social Action Chair, Lisa Burton Radzely.
New!

Sort and Pack Holiday Gifts- December 8, 1pm-3pm, JCFS Northbrook-- Sort donated holiday gifts and then shop the donations to fulfill children's wish lists. The event takes place from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m on Sunday, December 8 at JCFS in Northbrook. It is a great feeling knowing you are helping children get what they wanted this holiday season. If you want to participate, register by emailing SocialActionSH@gmail.com.

Toy Drive, November 20 - December 15 -- New, unwrapped toys, games, puzzles, craft supplies, etc. will brighten the holidays of children who haven't already received a sponsor. We are partnering with Jewish Child and Family Services (JCFS).
JEWISH COMMUNITY EVENTS

New!

ONGOING FUNDRAISERS

Twelve Tribes Bimah Panels: Only Three Panels Left to Dedicate! --  Celebrating our fifth anniversary in our building, our Twelve Tribes bimah ark panels are a combined creation of artists Maureen Fisher Schweit and Abe Schor, who worked together on concept, design, and colors.

You are invited to participate in this fundraising historic project by dedicating all or part of a panel. Each panel dedication is $1,800; panels may be dedicated by more than one person and families may pool resources to dedicate one panel (e.g, $180 each by 10 people).  Donors will be acknowledged on our new donor wall next to the Simcha Tree. The panel dedications will remain in perpetuity, or as long as the art remains in our sanctuary.  (They will not expire in 18 years as originally stated.) To learn more about the Bimah Panels, click here.  For questions, panel reservation, choice and payment options, contact Executive Director Nancy Kleine Kekst at (216) 789-2452 (mobile) or email execdir@shir-hadash.org.
