MEMBERSHIP AND UPCOMING EVENTS
MOSH will be meeting at the Wellisch home (14 Whitehall Court, Buffalo Grove) for pizza and poker on October 29, beginning at 7:00pm. We will order pizza once everyone has arrived and divvy up the costs; Dan will provide a small selection of drinks. Please RSVP to MOSH@shir-hadash.org by October 28 so we know how many to expect.
We've had a great response to our group outing to see On the Map, an inspiring documentary about the underdog Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team of 1976-77 that toppled the mighty Soviet Union team for the European Cup. We've sold out of our first block of 20 tickets and now have only about a dozen left!
Please join us to see this outstanding film on Saturday, November 5 at the ArcLight Cinema in The Glen. Note: The start time of the film has been moved to 7:30pm to accommodate havdalah. The screening will include a Q&A with director Dani Menkin and Israeli basketball legend Tai Brody. Afterwards, we will gather at Wildfire, 1300 Patriot Blvd. in Glenview, for refreshments and conversation. (individuals are responsible for their own food and beverages at Wildfire.)

Community Interfaith Thanksgiving Service, November 20
Shir Hadash will be participating in the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council's Thanksgiving Celebration on Sunday, November 20 at 7:00pm at St. Mary Parish, 10 North Buffalo Grove Road in Buffalo Grove. All are welcome! The main speaker will be Bishop Wayne N. Miller, President of the Council of Religious Leaders of Metropolitan Chicago, an interfaith organization. Also featured are the Interfaith Combined adult and children choirs, the Glory Finger puppets, and the Praise band and bell choir. Anyone interested in participating in the choirs should contact Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow. Non-perishable donations for area food banks will be collected.
After the celebration, there will be light refreshments. Bakers are always appreciated. Please bring your baked goods to St. Mary's that afternoon between 2:00 and 4:00pm at door #10, located between the directory and the school. For more information, call 224 699 0386.

CREATIVE WORSHIP AND RITUAL
No Shabbat Evening Service, Friday, October 28
Enjoy celebrating Shabbat with your family.
Shabbat No'ar Teen Service, Saturday, October 29, 10:00am
Shabbat No'ar (Youth Shabbat) is a new once-per-month Shabbat service geared towards our middle and high school students, but open to 3rd grade or above. Each service will be casual, maximum one hour long, and done in the Jewish summer camp style. There will be lots of music, Torah reading, either a story or conversation in lieu of a sermon, kiddush, challah, and a small oneg. The services will be led by Rabbi Seeg, but any student who wishes to help lead any part of a service is encouraged to do so (interested students should contact Rabbi Seeg). These services do count towards the students' expected service attendance. The Shabbat No'ar services are intended for students only (sorry grownups) but if a parent needs to be present for a specific reason, that can be accommodated. Mark your calendar for our next Family Shabbat Dinner and Service on Friday, November 4. Join us for a pasta dinner beginning at 5:30, followed by an engaging, kid-friendly service led by Rabbi Eitan and Rabbi Seeg. “Judaism and Baseball”
Dear Friends,
So, the Cubs are in the World Series!
There are actually a lot of things that baseball and Judaism
share. First off, notice how the
baseball season starts around Passover and ends around Sukkot. For Jews, this represents starting out
towards the Promised Land and arriving.
Same for baseball; the season starts out and finally arrives at the
Promised Land of pennant races and the World Series.
Baseball has its own kashrut – hot dogs, peanuts, and Cracker
Jack. We have our Jewish foods, too.
Baseball has its own very special rituals, such as the singing of the
Star Spangled Banner, the first pitch, seventh inning stretch, and standing for
the last out. We Jews have our version
of all of that, too.
Baseball has lots of rules, as does Judaism. Baseball places great significance on
tradition, memory, and the accomplishments of its great players and
managers. Judaism also honors tradition
and heritage, and celebrates its great leaders and rabbis.
In baseball, the game lasts as long as it needs to complete. There is no clock. Same with Judaism and our celebrations. The bases are 90 feet apart. When you add it all up, a player has to run
360 feet to round the bases, a multiple of 18.
And keep in mind that the objective of the game is to eventually ‘come
home.’ Same with Judaism.
This week, we start reading the Torah again with the opening words of
Genesis. Remember that the first words
are: “In the Big Inning.”

School Advisory Committee (SAC) Meeting, October 30
The next School Advisory Committee (SAC) meeting is October 30 at 10:30. We will discuss what's currently happening at the religious school and what's ahead. Sunday School parents should feel free to come and just listen, or to share ideas and get more involved.
SHY Trip to K1 Speed, October 30
Do you feel the need…the need for speed? If you're in grades 5-7 you are in luck, because SHY (Shir Hadash Youth) is going to K1 Speed in Buffalo Grove on Sunday, October 30! Our event will run from 3:00-5:00pm and involve two 12-lap races. The cost is $30 for SHY members (and its not too late to sign up for that), $35 for Shir Hadash members who are not SHY members, and $40 for non-members. New Monday Night Adult Ed Classes
This year our Adult Education program will be exploring two themes: refuat ha’nefesh u’refuat ha’guf (healing of soul and body) and Ethics. The refuat ha’nefesh… program will focus on spiritual, physical, and emotional health by exploring issues and practices that can or do affect these aspects of our lives. The Ethics program will look at a different challenging issue each month through the lens of Jewish concepts and texts both traditional and modern. All courses are on Monday evenings from 6:30-8:30 with a soup dinner from 6:30-7 and the educational program from 7-8:30. Shir Hadash youth will be gathering to see the film On The Map at the ArcLight Theater in the Glen on November 2 – free of charge! Scroll up to the top of this newsletter for a description ofr this inspiring documentary about the Israeli basketball team that beat all the odds – and the Soviet Union’s best team – to win the European Championship.
We will meet at Noodles and Company in The Glen at 5:00pm to have dinner before the 6:00 movie. If your teen is planning to come to dinner, we will be ordering in advance so please submit your order to Rabbi Seeg at learning@shir-hadash.org by Noon on Tuesday, November 1. All orders must be dairy/vegetarian. The tickets and dinner are being paid for by Rabbi Eitan and Shir Hadash but we have a limited number of spaces. Please let Rabbi Seeg or Rabbi Eitan know ASAP if your teen will join us.

SOCIAL ACTION
On Sunday, November 6, Shir Hadash will be preparing, cooking, and serving over 90 meals for needy individuals at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church soup kitchen in Evanston. This event will require volunteers to be available from 1:45 to 4:30pm. We need a minimum of 25 volunteers (about 10-12 families). There is no age limit to volunteer, but from past experience, kids should be at least 6 years old to fully participate.
Each family will be responsible for bringing an entrée that will feed 10 to 15 individuals, one gallon of milk, one large bag of frozen mixed vegetables, one large bag of fruit (oranges, bananas, etc.), and dessert.
