Next Sunday: Family and Community Hybrid Simchat Torah Celebration, September 26 7:00 p.m. at Shir Hadash (indoors) & Zoom --Let's celebrate Simchat Torah together! The Jewish festival of Simchat Torah celebrates our love for our Jewish tradition of learning and studying sacred scripture, the Torah. This is a great family holiday celebration! We will read the last few lines of the Torah and then the first few lines, thus finishing and beginning our study anew. And of course, we will dance, and have taffy apples (click here to reserve your apples)! We'll be together, but distanced and masked, at the synagogue (and on Zoom). After the service, all are welcome to go outside to the Sukkah in our Green Space to continue the celebration. In-person participants must register in advance; space is limited. “Turning to Harvest”
Dear Friends,
As the High Holidays come to a conclusion, we turn our eyes to the harvest. For the Jewish people, harvest comes in many ways. From Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, we both finish a year of growth and maturation and begin a new year with knowledge learned and goals set for the future. This is a harvest of the spirit. With the end of the summer and approaching fall, next week we will celebrate Sukkot when we gather in the richness of the fields, orchards, and vineyards. This is a harvest of God’s abundance. In two weeks, on Simchat Torah, we will conclude the reading of the Torah and begin again. This is a harvest of wisdom.
“Hodu L’Adonai ki tov, ki l’olam chasdo -
Give thanks to the Eternal who is good; God’s compassion is everlasting.”

Synagogue Office Closed September 21-22 -- Shir Hadash's office will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday for Sukkot.
New: Simchat Torah Affy Tapple Orders & Pickup: Click here to reserve your Affy Tapples for Simchat Torah by Friday, Sept. 24 at 10:00 a.m.! Then, on Sunday, Sept. 26, there are two ways to bring them home: if you're joining the Simchat Torah celebration via Zoom, you can drive by Shir Hadash between 2:30-4:30 PM for a socially distanced pickup, OR if you're attending the celebration in person, you can take your apples after the service to enjoy at home!
Two Sessions Left: Bystander Intervention Trainings to Combat Hate and Harassment -- Do you know what to do if you see someone being harassed or experiencing another form of discrimination? Join a public virtual training to learn about bystander hate incident intervention, and how you can combat hate and harassment. The 60-minute sessions from Advancing Justice Chicago focus on anti-Asian harassment, and the skills you learn can be applied to any type of harassment. Two dates remain; register now before they fill.

Hurricane Ida Relief -- Are you wondering how you can help relief efforts in Louisiana as they experience extensive damage and power outages that will last for weeks? Nechama: A Jewish Response to Disaster is helping families severely impacted by Hurricane Ida. They are sending teams to help with cleanup and relief efforts, and they need monetary donations. Donating air miles is another option. For more information and to donate, click here. JUF Chicago also is providing assistance via its Jewish Federation Disaster Relief Fund . All funds collected will be directed to community social welfare agencies in the affected areas. 100% of all donations go directly to aid those most grievously harmed by the storms. Whatever aid you can provide will be greatly appreciated, and remember to check if your employer will match your donation.
