Social Events and Membership

This weekend we will be migrating to a new website and website provider. The decision to move off of our current provider has been made in order to reduce operating costs for the organization. In addition, we also wanted to incorporate a number of features to improve collaboration and coordination amongst the staff, committees and leadership. In addition to fresh content, we will be incorporating a few blogs, which you will be able to view in our new website. There will be blogs for our newsletter, the Shir Hadash Weekly Bulletin; the Rabbi's Corner, where you will be able to read Rabbi Eitan’s weekly parsha; news from Education Director Emily Ascher, where parents and students will be able to reference any announcements they might have missed; and Creative Worship & Ritual (CWR), where you'll be able to find the announcements for upcoming shabbat services and holiday events. Over the next few months we'll be incorporating new content and features, so you may want to stop by the website to see what's happening.

The other change we are making is to move off of Constant Contact, which we've used for the last five years for our announcements and more recently our newsletter. The change is also to help us reduce operating costs and to reduce some of the administrative burden on our staff. We hope you find the changes helpful and inviting. We look forward to your feedback and suggestions as we introduce these new services.

Regards,
Communications & PR Committee

“In the Wilderness”

Dear Friends,

I visited with my parents for a few days earlier this week. They have lived in the Las Vegas area for over ten years and have loved every minute of their retirement. Their home is on the very edge of Las Vegas. West of their backyard is simply wilderness – desert mountains and dry stream beds. Looking upon the beautiful striped red-orange-beige-grey mountains as the colors change with the shifting of the sun is uplifting and stirring. It is no wonder that some of the greatest and most transformative moments of our people’s history happened in the wilderness. That’s where Abraham first met God. That’s where Moses encountered the burning bush...

To read the rest of Into the Wilderness, visit The Rabbi's Corner.

Shabbat Shalom

Teen News

Teen Advisory Board

The teen advisory board (TAB) is moving forward with a plan to help a Northbrook family in need. The teens are working on creating an event to help raise awareness and hopefully some funds for the cause. The teens plan to work together this summer to put on an event that will be open to the community at large. Details to follow.

Volunteer Opportunity for Teens (and Their Families)

The Greater Chicago Jewish Festival will be held on Sunday, June 10, at St. Paul Woods, Morton Grove. It will have three stages with music, dance, and storytelling; a family stage; a kosher food fair; an art fair; and an organization fair. The fair will take place between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. We have a volunteer slot from 3 to 5 p.m. to sell soda. Volunteering is open to teens, adults, and kids (with parental supervision). We still need more volunteers. Please send an e-mail with your name and t-shirt size to youth@shir-hadash.org.

A Special Saturday Night Shavuot Program: Come, Discuss, and Eat!

This Saturday night, May 26, is Shavuot, and we are trying something new that actually follows an old Jewish tradition on this holiday: we are going to meet to learn, to talk, and (of course) to eat! This program will run from 8 pm to 10:30 on Saturday, at the home of Ed and Rebecca Rice, which is at 3641 Bernay Drive in Northbrook.

There are two important traditions about Shavuot. First, you are supposed to get together at night, and learn together about Jewish topics. Second, you are supposed to eat—specifically, dairy products. So we’re going to combine the two (with flexibility for those for whom dairy is a problem). So first, the learning. Not just one topic, but four! We will have four bite-sized time periods of about a half-hour each, and during each of them, a leader will start a discussion by teaching about a topic, then will open the floor for our usual free-flowing dialogue. First, Rabbi Eitan will teach from the Book of Ruth, which will lead us into a discussion about modern relationships. Steve Lewin will follow up with another topic from the Book of Ruth about intermarriage and conversion. Then we will switch to a different area entirely, and Ed Rice and Burton Kopulsky will lead a discussion of Israel, but not about politics: instead, it will be about Israel’s world leadership in high technology. Finally, Fred Andes will teach us about a Recon topic, but not about philosophy; instead, since we talk a lot about “Rabbi Kaplan,” we will find out exactly who Mordecai Kaplan was—and you will be surprised!

We’ll do our traditional “bring your own dessert”—in the Shavuot tradition, it should be dairy, but it would be good if some folks can bring non-dairy and non-gluten products as well, so everyone can enjoy. If you are coming, please RSVP to Rebecca at r.rice1@comcast.net or call her at 847/509-9951.

Why Israel Matters: AIPAC’s Susan Millner to Join Us on June 1

Each day the headlines bring new and serious challenges for the State of Israel. Come and explore pressing Middle East issues that affect Israel’s security and U.S. Interests from the Peace Process to the Arab Spring. Join us and see how Israel is forming relationships with countries across the globe and why United States and Israel are safer, stronger and better together.

On Friday, June 1, our Shabbat service will feature Susan Brent Millner, AIPAC (America-Israel Public Affairs Committee) Chicago Leadership Management Director. Millner’s topic is “Why Israel Matters: Telling the Story.” The service will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the social hall of the Lutheran Church (30 Riverwoods Road in Lincolnshire).

AIPAC works with leaders in Congress and the administration to ensure a U.S.-Israel relationship that makes both countries safer, smarter and stronger. AIPAC is a bipartisan organization whose members are from every state in the union, representing all faiths, Democrats and Republicans, seasoned political veterans, as well as high school and college students. Since 2005, Susan Brent Millner, Chicago AIPAC Leadership Management Director, has been responsible for deepening pro-Israel activism within the Chicago area by empowering AIPAC members to connect to the important work of political engagement and to continuing their education of the critical issues affecting the U.S.-Israel relationship.
