“How Beautiful”
Dear Friends,
When we begin our morning worship services, we sing “Ma Tovu Ohalecha Ya’akov - How beautiful are your tents O’ Jacob, your homes O’ Israel.” These words are part of this week’s Torah portion and were recited by Bil’am, a Moabite prophet. He intended to curse the Children of Israel as they moved through Moab towards the Promised Land. Instead, from his lips came words of praise and blessing.
I have been thinking about this Torah story as Dawn and I walked and hiked all over Jerusalem during the past week. During today’s hike, we saw all the way east across the Jordan valley to the…

Education Update
Happy Independence Day
Is the second floor of your house 20 degrees hotter than the first floor? Are you, too, trying to keep cool at those 100 degree baseball tournaments, pouring water over the heads of any red-faced child you see panting by you? Are you attempting to find the best 4th of July schedule involving fireworks, a parade, and perhaps a beach? Good times if you have air-conditioning.
The 4th of July marks the celebration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America. Even my favorite all-American holiday cannot stop me from pointing out a Jewish connection…

Havdalah Service, Saturday, July 7
This coming weekend, we will not have a Friday night service, but we are having a different celebration instead. Come enjoy Havdalah with us in a special new way! We are getting together Saturday night at the home of Lise and Sandi Schleicher, 2384 Dehne Road in Northbrook, at 7:30. But there's a lot more happening than at your regular Havdalah—there will be a hot tub to hang out in, a fire pit to roast marshmallows and make s'more's, games to play, and much more! A few details:
1. The house is at the corner of Western & Dehne. You can park in the school lot across Western if you can't find a space on the street.2. Don't come in via Techny Road—it's closed.
3. If you are hot tubbing, please bring towels, to make sure that we have enough.
4. Please bring lawn chairs if you can.
5. One thing will be like Friday night—please bring desserts!6. MOST important, so we can plan, an RSVP would be great, to either sschleicher@onebox.com or (800) 897-0533. But if you decide at the last minute that you want to come, and haven't RSVP'ed, please do come! Looking forward to seeing you there!
Recent Shabbat Services Featured Both Lighthearted and Serious Moments
On June 15, we learned about a very important event in the Torah—the Incident of the Twelve Spies. That included members participating in a dramatic skit—so we got to play spies! Also, Rabbi Eitan taught about the significance of the fringes on the tallit, we blessed the kids heading off to summer camp and to Israel, and we wished Rabbi and Dawn well on their trip to Florence and then to Israel. When he comes back (July 20 service), he will tell us all about the trip, including his talk at a synagogue in Florence, by the name of Shir Hadash!
On June 29, we had a special guest at services—Rich Goldwasser, one of the leaders of J Street in Chicago and nationally. J Street calls itself "the political home for pro-Israel, pro-peace Americans." (For further information about the group and its activities, see http://www.jstreet.org/.) Rich talked about J Street's perspective on Israeli and Middle East issues, and we had an in-depth dialogue. This was a continuation of the series of speakers that we have had recently, including a speaker from AIPAC. If you have ideas for other speakers that we should invite, please let us know.
