TONIGHT! MOSH Card Night
Men of Shir Hadash (MOSH) Card Night will be held tonight from 8 to 10 p.m., at Sandi and Lise Schleicher’s house, 2384 Dehne Road, Northbrook. RSVP to (800) 897-0533; drop-ins are OK, too! Come out and meet some other men from Shir Hadash; talk, have a drink, play some cards, eat, etc. Learn to play hearts, spades, euchre, pinochle, bridge, poker, etc. The games will change based on what everyone wants to play or learn. MOSH will be meeting the fourth Wednesday of every month from 8 to 10 p.m., so if you can’t make it this month, put us in your calendar for next month.
Annual Picnic Highlights and Photos
This year's picnic was a big hit! The weather was picture perfect, and Sunset Woods Park, with so many large and beautiful trees, made a great setting for a lovely evening. The kids enjoyed the playgrounds and the games brought by some of our members. Marc Fargotstein, our very own sous chef, worked the grill cooking up hamburgers, hot dogs, and veggie versions of both. Jeff and Ruth Wallk also worked the grills with flair. Rabbi Eitan led the Havdalah service. He brought song sheets and a variety of shakers. The music was so good that people broke out into a hora! Marilla Gortva, an exchange student from Hungary who is now living with the Farahmandpours, taught us how to sing "Everybody Loves Saturday Night" in Hungarian!
As always, our Shir Hadash members cooked up delicious dishes, including quinoa tabbouleh, Italian hummus, homemade vegetarian baked beans, and a variety of salads. Ask a picnicker about Chris Farahmandpour's brownie-cookies and Katie Zwick's mandel bread--everyone was talking about them! Maybe they will share their recipes (hint hint). We also made kosher s'mores, which, against all odds, were great! Join us next year for another evening of fun games, great food, and wonderful company (and hopefully some more s'mores).
Volunteers Needed for High Holiday Packing and Delivery
Once again this year, Shir Hadash will be joining with Maot Chitim of Greater Chicagoland to help them pack and deliver High Holiday food baskets for needy Jewish families all over the Chicago area. There are two different ways you can help, either packing food boxes or delivering them.
- PACKING will take place on Sunday, August 26th from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. The address of the packing has not been determined yet; once Social Action Chair Mark Lenhart knows the address, he will let all volunteers know.
- DELIVERY of food packages will take place on Sunday, September 9th, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Buffalo Grove/Wheeling area. We will be delivering 105 food packages, which will be in large boxes weighing approximately 20 lbs. each. We deliver to several large complexes and use a rental truck to transport the boxes. Mark will provide the address of where to meet for those interested in helping deliver boxes.
Book Club to Meet in Early October
Our next book club meeting will be in early October after the High Holidays. We will be discussing The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman, a historical fiction at Masada's final stand. Stay tuned for more information.
Save the Date: Chicago Festival of Israeli Film
Join Shir Hadash members to attend the Chicago Festival of Israeli Film on Sunday, November 4. We are planning to go see “My Australia” as a group event at 6 p.m. at Northbrook Court. For more information on the group outing or how to purchase tickets, please contact Meryl Abensohn at abenkras@aol.com.
Membership Renewal Forms Are Overdue
The membership renewal forms were mailed on June 28 and were due on August 15. Please call Lillian at (847) 498-8218 if you did not receive the forms.
Help Wanted, Shir Hadash-Style
In order for our congregation to remain vibrant and successful, we need you to volunteer your time and energy. The truth is, we don’t have enough people stepping forward right now to do the work that’s needed to keep our synagogue viable and functioning properly. The more people who volunteer, the less work it is for everyone. You should have received our Help Wanted classifieds via e-mail, but in case you missed it, visit our website to see what volunteer positions are open!
We Need Your Shir Hadash Photos!
As we continue to improve our website and marketing materials, we are finding that we need more great photos of our congregation—at religious school, social events, worship services, teen activities, etc. Please take a minute to look through your digital files and e-mail your best photos to photo@shir-hadash.org.

Creative Worship & Ritual
Upcoming B’nai Mitzvah
Saturday, September 1, 2012
Shabbat Morning Service; we will celebrate the Bar Mitzvah of Michael Karb, son of Yvette & Fred Karb, 9:45 a.m., Northbrook Hilton on Milwaukee Avenue.
Saturday, September 8: Celebrate Selichot Eve with a Special and Healing Film about a Group of Cantors' Historic Journey to Poland
Join us at 7:30 at Our Lady of the Brook for an evening of reflection, study, and friends. Selichot is a brief Saturday evening service that prepares us for the work of the High Holidays. Its readings and melodies are meditative, reflective and stirring. Selichot is study. We will view an incredible Jewish documentary that explores the musical roots and connections so many have to Polish and Eastern European heritage. Selichot is camaraderie. Bring a special treat to share in our dessert refreshment buffet.
The film, “100 Voices: A Journey Home,” chronicles a musical voyage to the birthplace of songful prayer known as chazzanut. In June 2009, an assembly of the world’s finest cantors came together for a series of exhilarating concerts backed by the Polish national Opera Chorus and a 100-piece orchestra. On a historic mission of reconciliation, the largest group of cantors to return to Poland since World War II travels from Warsaw to Krakow, culminating in an emotional memorial at the gates of Auschwitz. The film celebrates the resilience of Jewish tradition and the ability of music to heal hearts.

Shabbat Shoftim
Torah Portion: Deuteronomy 16:18-21:9 / Haftarah Portion: Isaiah 51:12-52:12
“Win-Win”
Dear Friends,
This week’s Torah portion includes one of the most famous lines of the Torah, “Justice, Justice shall you pursue.” According to rabbinic commentary, there are no mistakes in the Torah. So, it begs us to ask why the word ‘justice’ is repeated.
The Talmud explains that the first mention of ‘justice’ refers to the commandments and statutes of our Jewish tradition that present the correct legal approach to conduct and disputes. The second ‘justice’ is about seeking compromise and negotiated solutions between parties. An example is given to illustrate. Imagine two ships at sea trying to sail at the same time through a narrow strait. If each insists on being the first through…

Annual SHOP Orders Are Now Payable By Credit Card
If every family purchases $400 a month in grocery, gas, or other cards, we can earn over $15,000. Shir Hadash believes that an inability to pay should never be a barrier to membership or education. Special consideration is given to our members when circumstances prevent them from meeting any part of their financial commitment. To offset this consideration and to make up the budgetary deficit, the Board is asking that all members consider making a monthly commitment to using shop gift cards. Purchasing SHOP gift cards helps the shul raise much needed funds without spending any more money than you already do for your regular expenses. A complete list of the many gift cards available through this program, along with the percentage the shul earns is available on our website. Orders can be picked up at Sunday school or the Shir Hadash office.
