Synagogue Dedication,
August 18 -- Our Big Day is Almost Here!
Please join us as we dedicate and celebrate our new home!
- Bringing Home the Torahs: We will be carrying our torahs on foot from Northbrook to our new synagogue in Wheeling beginning at the old office, 3340 Dundee Road, at 10:00am. Due to bike path construction along Dundee through the forest preserve, the police have asked us to drive for the portion between Chase Bank (at Sanders and Dundee) in Northbrook and Solex College (at Milwaukee and Dundee) in Wheeling. You may join the parade at any of those points, or meet the parade when it arrives at the synagogue (200 W. Dundee Road) at around noon.
- The Dedication: If you will not be walking, we recommend that you arrive at the synagogue around 11:30 to allow time to park and be ready to greet the torahs. Please park at Hawthorne School, 200 Glendale St., Wheeling, located right behind the synagogue. When the procession arrives, we will cheer on the torahs and dance to the music of a trio from the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band. Afterwards, the dedication ceremony will take place under a tent in our beautiful field, complete with music from the Lahaka and the Mighty Shir Hadash Klezmorim! To conclude the dedication ceremony, we will follow Rabbi Eitan to the main entrance for the affixing of the mezuzah on the front door and the sanctuary doors.
- Celebrate: Once the mezuzot have been affixed, the festivities will begin! We will have tours of our new synagogue, dancing to the music of a trio From the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band, and activities for kids including a bounce house. A delicious kosher lunch will be served.
- Please RSVP: Click here to let us know that you will be attending and to sign up to help. There are lots of options, and you can choose a time slot that works for you! We small time commitment from everyone will make this a day we all can enjoy. So join us on Sunday - after 18 years of wandering, we’re finally here! For more information, contact Melanie Andes, fmandes@comcast.net.
Call for Photos for
Dedication Celebration
Time to dig through those old photo albums and find photos
from Shir Hadash events--services, your kids' b'nai mitzvah, baby namings,
religious school, picnics, etc. We'd love to use them in our Dedication
slideshow so we can document the growth of our congregation. Bar and bat
mitzvah photos especially needed! You can scan and e-mail the photos to
photo@shir-hadash.org.
Update Your
Membership Info Today!
Now is the time to renew your membership for the coming
year. Our membership year runs from July 1 to June 30. We’re now entering August. Please remember,
only members who have submitted all their renewal forms will be admitted to
High Holiday services , which start on September 4. Additionally, families with
bar/bat mitzvahs coming up must be members in good standing in order to have
access to the synagogue’s resources (use of the ark, books, torah, rabbi, and
of course the new building).
Click here to view the online membership area of our
website. If you haven’t received the online link for membership renewal or have
any questions, please contact the tech team at info@shir-hadash.org.
Tell Your Friends –
High Holidays “180 for $18” Tickets
In 2013, Shir Hadash is offering a special promotion: “180
for $18.” Guests can purchase High Holiday tickets at the reduced rate of $18
per ticket. We hope this will inspire new families to get to know us and become
members of our community. Some restrictions apply:
- There are only 180 tickets available for purchase at the price of $18 per ticket.
- The offer cannot be redeemed by current or past members, those who have purchased High Holiday tickets in the last five years, or those who participated in last year’s complimentary ticket program.
- All registrations must be received by August 20.
Click here to visit our website for more information and
online registration.
Kosher Honey for the High Holidays
It’s almost time to start a Sweet New Year. Shir Hadash has arranged to obtain kosher honey with our logo on it. Honey will be available for sale at the Building Dedication, $10 for one jar, $8 for 3 or more jars (a Dedication-only special price). We also have a code that will allow people to purchase Shir Hadash honey online and have it shipped directly from the manufacturer to them or to family or friends. Just click here to place your order. Honey is a perfect New Year's surprise for kids at college or out of town family. Funds from the honey sale benefit Shir Hadash.
August Dining for
Dollars: Superdawg!
How many hot dogs can you eat in a week? A LOT if it's for a good cause. During the entire week of August 19-25, come to
Superdawg in Wheeling (333 S Milwaukee Ave, Wheeling) or in Chicago
(6363 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL), present our flyer and 20% of your
purchase will be donated to Shir Hadash. Click here to view and print the flyer; it is also available on the Shir Hadash website by going to the Superdawg
event on the Calendar. Flyers will also
be available at the Building Dedication on August 18. As the summer starts winding down, it’s a great time
to have a hot dog in the fresh air and at the same time support our community.
Book Club
The next book for after the High Holidays will be My
Russian Grandmother and Her American Vacuum Cleaner: A Family Memoir "
by Meir Shalev. This is the story of a second generation Israeli family and
their grandmother battling her biggest problem with Israel—the dirt. Watch for
details of our fall meeting coming soon.
Permanent Restaurant Fundraisers: The Continental and Butterfield's
Have you been to The Continental or Butterfield's
restaurants? These friendly eateries in Buffalo Grove and Northbrook are
supporting Shir Hadash with PERMANENT fundraisers. They will donate 5% of any bill from Shir
Hadash members any day of the week and no flyer is necessary!
The Continental Restaurant is located at 788 S Buffalo
Grove, Buffalo Grove, next to the Dominick’s. Butterfield's, a breakfast/lunch
restaurant, is located at 4195 Dundee Road in Northbrook -- different strip
mall, with a different Dominick's. Both are very convenient to the synagogue --
a great idea after Sunday School! Be sure to mention Shir Hadash when you are
paying your bill so we will get credit for your purchase.
Volunteer Opportunities
Pitch In for our Big
Move
We still need lots of
help with unpacking at the synagogue today and tomorrow, August 15 and 16,
in order to be ready for the dedication the following Sunday. Please contact
Dan Wellisch and Suzanne Wexler ASAP at volunteer@shir-hadash.org to sign up
for a shift.
High Holidays Food
Baskets
Once again this year, Shir Hadash will be joining with Maot
Chitim of Greater Chicagoland to help them pack and deliver High Holiday food
baskets for needy Jewish families all over the Chicago area. There are two different ways you can help,
either packing food boxes or delivering them.
PACKING will take place on Sunday, August 18th from 9:30 to 10:15a.m. (Note the time change – still plenty of time
to make it to the synagogue dedication!) The address for the packing is 5990 W.
Touhy, Niles, IL.
DELIVERY of food packages will take place on Sunday, August 25th, from 9:30 a.m. to
11:30 a.m. in the Buffalo Grove/Wheeling area.
If you are interested in helping on one or both of these
dates, please contact Mark Lenhart, social.action@shir-hadash.org as soon as
possible for more information.
Pick Your Week to
Host an Oneg
This year we are asking each of our families to be Oneg
& Service Host for just one service a year.
This does NOT mean providing all the refreshments for the oneg -- just setting up, cleaning up, and greeting
our guests. Multiple families can/should
host the same week. While you’re exploring the new Membership Management System
on Shul Cloud, you will find more information and a form to choose a date and
sign up on the home page. Sign up today
to pick the best date for your family!
Join the ADA Benefit
Committee
We are pleased to announce that Shir Hadash will be hosting
a benefit next year in support of the American Diabetes Association. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to
become a leader within the greater Chicagoland community while supporting this
important cause.
The initial agenda and core concept for the production have
already been established. Now the team
is looking to assemble a planning committee to work on the following areas:
- Formulating a plan
- Creating a budget
- Seeking out and signing up performers, including musicians and actors
- Assembling a production team that will include stage crew, food, drinks, and production logistics
If this is your area of interest or expertise, we would love
to have you! Please contact Jeffrey
Wallk (president@shir-hadash.org) for more information.
Creative Worship & Ritual
Dedication Weekend: August 16-19
By now, you all know what’s happening next Sunday - we
dedicate our new home! But what you may
not know is that Sunday is only one part of a whole weekend of
celebration. We start on Friday night,
with our first Friday night service
in the sanctuary with the completed bima, ark (permanent, not portable), Ner
Tamid (eternal light - it’s on already), and the Torahs (in the new ark, of
course). The one thing that hasn’t
changed is that the service starts at 7:30.
Oh, and we will have our standard oneg, other than it being in the new
“living room” just outside of the sanctuary.
So come and help us start the celebration - and bring some friends to
join in the joy!
But wait, there’s more... ! This special weekend continues
on Saturday morning, when we have our first Shabbat morning service in the
sanctuary. The service will start at
9:45, and the service will include the
first bar/bat mitzvah in the synagogue.
All members are welcome. Over the
years, we have heard from some members that they would love to be able to come
to services on Saturday morning at the shul. Now here is your chance!
To summarize:
- Friday night service, 7:30
- Saturday morning service, 9:45am
- Sunday dedication, 10:00 in Northbrook for Torah march, 12:00 noon at the synagogue for dedication celebration.
See you for a memorable weekend of celebration!
High Holidays –
Service Schedule
Shir Hadash offers a full complement of services and
activities for the High Holidays, taking place at both Our Lady of the Brook in
Northbrook and our synagogue in Wheeling. Click here to view a full schedule on
our website.
High Holidays – Yom
Kippur Torah Portions Available
Thanks to everyone who has signed up as a Torah reader for
the High Holidays services. We still have openings for Torah readers or
chanters for Yom Kippur afternoon. Recent bar and bat mitzvahs would be
especially welcome! We will e-mail to you an MP3 of the Rabbi chanting the
portion, plus a written copy of the portion in Hebrew and English. You also can
get help from the Rabbi and Dawn in getting ready to chant. Please contact Fred
Andes at fandes@btlaw.com or 773 354 3100.
Adult Education
Lunch & Learn
with Rabbi Eitan
Due to the upcoming office move, the next Lunch & Learn
Torah Study will be held on August 22 at noon, in the Rabbi’s office at the
synagogue. Bring a brown bag lunch and join in for an enlivening discussion of

“Shehecheyanu Moments”
Dear Friends,
![]() |
| Elana Weiner-Kaplow (2nd from left), arriving in Israel with friends |
These days I have been thinking that the meaning of the
Shehecheyanu prayer goes beyond simply thanksgiving. Lately, it seems that Shehecheyanu is about
recognizing the profound moments of transition and change that come after
months of hard work and intense preparation.
On Monday evening, my wife Dawn and I had the honor of watching an
on-line web feed of our daughter Elana making aliyah to Israel. We watched as her El Al plane landed at Ben
Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv as hundreds of immigrants of all ages prepared to
begin their lives as new citizens of Israel.
We caught glimpses of her as she stood on the tarmac outside the
airplane and posed for pictures with her special group - 125 young adults all
joining the Israeli army in the coming weeks.
We saw her in the terminal – all smiles, hope, and excitement for the
fantastic life journey upon which she was finally embarking.
She has been working on this moment for many months and even
years. And now, before us on screen, hopes and dreams were becoming
reality. It won’t be a complete break.
We will see Elana during her extended leaves from the army. After her army service, she expects to return
to the States to finish her college degree. We will miss her, but we are so
proud that she is pursuing her goals.
Likewise, our community stands on the brink, this very week,
of a major transition and fulfillment of our dreams….
