Recap: Midwest Regional Kallah

Shir Hadash youth were joined by teens from Evanston, Naperville and Michigan our 11th annual Midwest Regional Kallah last weekend. Over 40 kids came together for a weekend of Reconstructionist living, with programming led by teens from Shir Hadash and JRC. All our kids proved to be “Jewper Heroes” as we used the comic book hero theme to look at Jewish values and apply them to our lives. The kids created a spectacular weekend that included services led by Rabbi Eitan, parsha olympics led by Adam & Spencer (including a life-size game of Super Jewpardy), mask making to show our inner and outer selves, sledding, laughing and a lot more fun. Everyone enjoyed the Saturday night movie and ice cream sundaes. The discussion on the bus ride home: Next year's theme!  Kol Hakavod to our Shir Hadash teen leaders: Joel Schleicher, Adam Weiss, Danny Mostow, Spencer Soglin, Lizzy Soglin, and thank you to  Mira Horwitz for leading the Havdalah service.

Shir Hadash Ta’am Yisrael Trip
Several Shir Hadash students participated in a Ta'am Yisrael trip from February 3-11. They visited sites including Masada, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, the Western Wall, Yad Vashem, and the Dead Sea, participated in several tikkun olam projects, and discovered a new connection to the land of Israel as Jewish young adults. Mazel tov to Jaclyn Rosenberg, Alex Schleicher, Arie Kharasch, and Emily Zinbarg!

“Making a Temple of our Lives”

Dear Friends,
What if every Jew could take part in creating the portable Temple of our ancestors’ desert wandering? That is the theme of this week’s Torah portion.  Moses called upon every member of the Children of Israel to make donations towards the construction of the Mishkan, the portable tent where God’s presence would be worshiped.  The donations came in and the construction began.

When our people settled in the Promised Land, the portable Mishkan tent was exchanged for local worship sites amongst the tribes and then, eventually, a central Temple in Jerusalem.  Now that the Temple is destroyed and our Jewish people are scattered to every corner of the earth, what is to substitute for our central place of worship?  Certainly our synagogue building could be just the place.  Yet, our ancestors had another, even more powerful idea in mind. Our sages taught that our dining room tables would become mini-altars, replacing the Jerusalem Temple as the place where our Jewish tradition would centralize and grow….
