“Israel: A Miracle in Our Time”

“Ze ha-yom asah Adonai, nagila ve-nismeha vo - This is a day the Eternal has created; let us rejoice and be glad in it. (Psalms 118:24)”

Dear Friends,

In a few days we will celebrate Israel’s 66th Independence Day – a miracle in our time.

Thinking back, I remember the moment in my life when I first understood the importance and miracle of Israel.  Without a doubt, it was July 4th, 1976.  America was marking its bicentennial; Israel had just celebrated 28 years of independence and I had arrived in Jerusalem for a high school summer program.  A week before, an Air France jet had been hijacked by Palestinian terrorists and flown to Entebbe, Uganda.  Jews and Israelis were taken prisoner and non-Jews were released in an Auschwitz style ‘selection.’  A hostage standoff ensued as the world watched and waited….

Yom HaShoah Service Recap

Our seventh graders led this year’s Holocaust memorial service last Sunday, with an emphasis on  stories of survival. The students studied individual survival stories from the Shoah, created artwork that represented the survivors’ rebuilding of their shattered lives, and shared what they had learned through testimonials, poems, and biographies. Many thanks to their classroom teacher Judy Kleiman; art specialist Phyllis Levun-Agostino; Michael Agostino, who built display stands for the art; Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow, Music Director Adrian Durlester, and the madrichim for helping the students prepare a moving and meaningful service of remembrance.

Wellness Tip of the Week: Veggies for Snacks
We all know that vegetables are good for us, but how do we get our kids to eat them when they are bombarded with sugary snacks, chips and soda? How about this: slice up raw veggies and leave them on the counter with a low-cal dressing for a dip. Perfect after school snack! If it is easy and right in front of them, they will eat it!

Many thanks to SH member Jennifer Dumrauf for her wellness tips. Watch future issues for more great ideas!
