Book Club
We had a spectacular turnout of 20 people at our Book Club meeting this month. We discussed My Promised Land by Avi Shavit, an Israeli journalist and columnist. There were many differing opinions voiced and a truly amazing, animated discussion was generated. As Saul Bellow said, “If you want everyone to love you, don’t discuss Israeli politics!”  Thanks to Wendy and Burton Kopulsky for graciously hosting such a large group.

The next Book Club selection will be Pictures from the Past by Deby Eisenberg. Our meeting will be held the second week of January. Watch future editions of the newsletter for more details

Creative Worship and Ritual

This Week’s Services
Tot Shabbat, Friday November 7, 6:15pm
This special service is for kids age six and under, and their families.  Rabbi Eitan and Lauren Shook will lead a lively service that includes the Shabbat prayers along with story, song, and dance. It’s an interactive Shabbat experience not to be missed! Following the service, we will come together for refreshments and a Shabbat activity with Lauren. Please bring treats to share at the oneg.

Shabbat Evening Service, Friday November 7, 7:30pm
Our theme for this week is: "What do the Rabbis Teach Us about Bringing Peace to the World?"   We talked on the High Holidays about the lack of peace in the world today.  Well, our great sages understood what it was like to live in a world filled with conflict and worry.  They have a lot to teach us today about how to make peace, even with adversaries whose views are diametrically opposed to ours. Join us for a “Beit Midrash – House of Study” service, during which we will explore classic rabbinic texts about making peace in a world of strife.  And - of course - please bring something to share at the oneg.  See you Friday night!

Upcoming Services
  • Shabbat Evening Service, Friday, November 21, 7:30pm
  • Shabbat Morning Service and Bar Mitzvah, Saturday, November 22, 9:30am

Volunteer Opportunities

SHOP Needs You!
Our ongoing, and vital, SHOP Shir Hadash fundraiser needs volunteers to staff our table at Sunday School. It’s an easy job and a great chance to schmooze with other Shir Hadashniks! Can you spare one Sunday morning to help – just one – from 9:00 to 12:30? Click here to sign up for a day of your choice on Shul Cloud, or contact Gina Zinbarg, gzinbarg@sbcglobal.net, for more info.

Thanks to our PADS Homeless Shelter Volunteers!
Many thanks to everyone who donated food on November 4 to support the PADS Homeless Shelter in Buffalo Grove! Your help makes a significant difference in the lives of our neighbors in need.

We have an upcoming opportunity to volunteer for PADS again on Tuesday,  December 2.  There will be donations of food needed again as well as the opportunity for seven people to volunteer on-site for the dinner shift, from 6:30-9:00pm at the PADS shelter at Kingswood Methodist Church.  More information will be coming shortly.

Soup Kitchen Help Needed, November 9
On Sunday, November 9, we will be preparing, cooking and serving over 90 meals for needy individuals at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church soup kitchen in Evanston.  This event will require volunteers to be available from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.  We need a minimum of 25 volunteers; that's about 10-12 families. There is no age limit to volunteer, but from past experience, kids should be at least six years old to fully participate.

Each family will be responsible for bringing an entrée that will feed 15 to 20 individuals, one gallon milk, one gallon orange juice, one large bag frozen mixed vegetables, one large bag of fruit (oranges, bananas, etc.),  and dessert.

If you are interested in helping, please contact Mark Lenhart, mjlenhart@comcast.net, ASAP. Thank you in advance for your support!

"Helping Hands at Hawthorn" Project, November 9
Here’s a wonderful opportunity to participate in “Helping Hands at Hawthorn” on Sunday, November 9 from 9:30am to noon. Shir Hadash volunteers will help host a tables where kids coming to the Hawthorn mall in Vernon Hills will make “Life Support” cups for parents of children staying overnight at Lutheran General Hospital. We will supply the cups, decorations, and sample size shampoo, toothpaste and body wash to put inside.

Shir Hadash will be joined by three other synagogues, JCC, Big Tent Judaism, and JUF for this project. We need two or three people to help set up the table at 9:30, help children decorate and pack the cups, and then take down the table and clean up. Easy and fun! If you’d like to be involved, please contact Lynne Arons at 847 732 7001 or Rzldzl122@aol.com.

The Rabbi’s Corner

November 7-8, 2014 / 15 Heshvan 5775
Shabbat Vayera
Torah Portion: Genesis 18:1-22:24 / Haftarah Portion: II Kings 4:1-37

“The Sins of Sodom and Gemorah”

Dear Friends,

What were the sins of Sodom and Gemorah?  Why did all the people merit complete and utter destruction?  Rabbi Harvey Fields listed the six sins for which the people would be punished:

1) They refused to share their wealth and abundant riches with others.
2) They made fun of those in need and deliberately made their lives more miserable.
3) They refused to care for the sick, aid the poor, help the needy, or offer hospitality to the immigrant or stranger in their midst.
4) Their leaders were so greedy and selfish that they made cruelty a public policy.
5) They went so far as to punish their own citizens who reached out to feed the hungry or provide shelter to the homeless.
6) Their judges practiced dishonesty and robbery, and their courts offered no fair treatment for victims of oppression or injustice.

While these offenses certainly merited punishment, was immediate obliteration required.  Why weren’t the people given a chance to repent?  Jonah gave the people of Nineveh a chance to repent.  The prophets cry out incessantly for the people to change their ways.  Why not here?
