Membership and Upcoming Events

Yoga at Shir Hadash Starts March 10
We are pleased to bring yoga classes to Shir Hadash! We are starting with a 5 week session this coming Tuesday (3/10) at Shir Hadash from 6-7pm. Our classes are being taught by a certified instructor and are appropriate for men and women, ages 14 and up with any level of yoga experience. We will even accommodate those needing to work from a chair instead of a mat.

For class description, instructor info, class dates, more info and online payment please click here. On site payment (cash, check or credit card) will be available.  Please email Joanne Litman at jolitman@gmail.com with questions or to let her know you'll be there (although a reservation is NOT necessary).

Town Hall Meeting, March 15
Save the date for a Shir Hadash Town Hall meeting on Sunday, March 15. This is an excellent opportunity to hear about what is happening in the synagogue, ask questions, and contribute ideas. The meeting will start at 10:30am in the sanctuary.

Book Club, March 19
Our book club’s next selection will be Son of Hamas by Mossab Hassam Yousef. This book tells the true story of the son of a Hamas leader, who then worked for the Israeli Shin Bet and ultimately became a Christian. What a journey! Our discussion will be led by Ed Rice, who has attended a talk by the author. Our meeting will be held on March 19 at the Andes home, 945 Creek Bend Drive in Vernon Hills. Everyone is welcome. For more information, contact Meryl Abensohn, abenkras@aol.com.

Community Seder, April 4
Our annual Community Seder is scheduled for April 4, at Shir Hadash. Mark your calendars now, and watch for more details to be announced soon.

Highlights from Coffee House Night – Open Mic Style
Once again, it was a magical evening!  We had 22 acts performing to a room of over 65 people who came out to enjoy the evening.  Big Thank Yous go to our Baking Talent, Front of the House Talent, Tech Expert, and our King of Maintenance, Don, who set up our environment. They all pulled together in phenomenal team fashion to make this very cool evening flow seamlessly from beginning to end.  Special Thanks goes to Katy Zwick and Margie Skora who partnered in organizing this event. Big Thank Yous also go to all the audience members and talent who generously contributed to our donation baskets so we can continue to offer our Coffee House Night event.

We are hoping to put our next Coffee House Night – Open Mic Style on the calendar in May.  Please stay tuned!  But for now, please enjoy a few of the wonderful pictures taken by Maureen at our February 21st Coffee House Night – Open Mic Style.

Creative Worship and Ritual

This Week’s Services
Purim Tot Shabbat, Friday March 6, 6:15pm
We're very excited to present our first "Tot Shabbat Shuffle," a program of the Jewish Outreach Institute in which unaffiliated families attend family services at area synagogues. Rabbi Eitan will be leading a special Tot Shabbat Purim service for our member families and these special guests. We can use your help to make them feel welcome -- please see "Volunteer Opportunities" below.

Shabbat Evening Service, Friday, March 6, 7:30pm
"The Serious Side of Purim: Anti-Semitism in the Contemporary World." Join us for a Shabbat service, during which we will read the Megillah of Esther and explore how the story represents many personalities and events of our day.

Second Friday Speaker Series Begins March 13, 7:30pm
We are excited to launch the new Shir Hadash Speaker Series. The theme of the series is Jewish Paths to Understanding, Tolerance, and Coexistence.  The series seeks to inspire listeners to join in bringing peace and understanding to our world through Jewish values and teachings. These presentations will enhance our Shabbat services on the second Friday of each month.

Our first speaker will be Harry Rhodes, the Executive Director and one of the founders of “Growing Home,” Chicago's leading organic agriculture social enterprise focused on empowering people and communities in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood. Growing Home's USDA certified organic farms serve as the foundation for the organization's vision of a world with healthy people and communities. Harry will speak on the topic, “Tikkun Olam - Repairing Neighborhoods and Lives: Bringing Skills, Jobs, Engagement, and Healthy Food to those on Society’s Margins through Urban Farming.” Be sure to join us for this inspiring presentation.

Volunteer Opportunities

New! Tot Shabbat Greeters, March 6
We will be welcoming unaffiliated families to Shir Hadash to participate in this week's Tot Shabbat service (see details above), and we can use your help to make them feel welcome! Volunteers are needed to greet our guests, help them sign in, and generally let them know what a great place Shir Hadash would be for their families. Volunteers are asked to arrive at 5:45 to help with set-up and greet early arrivals. We also need members to bring treats to share at the oneg after the service. Please contact Sandy Weiss (sandy2weiss@gmail.com) to let her know that you can help out. Thanks!

New! PADS Homeless Shelter, March 17
We have another opportunity to help serve our neighbors in need at the PADS Shelter located at Kingswood Church, 401 W. Dundee Road, Buffalo Grove.  There are three different ways to participate:
  • Dinner Shift - 6:30-8:45pm. Six volunteers are needed (16 years and older). You will help set up, serve, and clean up after the meal.  You'll get a chance to eat and interact with the homeless guests.
  • Food to be Prepared and Dropped Off - Main Dish, Salad, Vegetable Dish (each enough to feed 15+)
  • Other Food Donations to be Dropped Off - 2 Gallons of Milk, 2 Gallons of Juice, 2lbs of Sliced Lunch Meat, 2lbs of Sliced Cheese, 15 pieces of Fresh Fruit to be used for sack lunches.

SHOP Needs You!
Our ongoing, and vital, SHOP Shir Hadash fundraiser needs volunteers to staff our table at Sunday School. It’s an easy job and a great chance to schmooze with other Shir Hadashniks! Can you spare one Sunday morning to help – just one – from 9:00 to 12:30? Click here to sign up for a day of your choice on Shul Cloud, or contact Gina Zinbarg, gzinbarg@sbcglobal.net, for more info.

The Rabbi’s Corner

“How Things Have Changed”

Dear Friends,

My, how things have changed... thank God!  This week we celebrate the holiday of Purim, a spring fever Jewish holiday. It commemorates the defeat of Haman and the forces who wanted to destroy the Jews of Persia, roughly 1,500 years ago. Back then, the Jews of Persia were on their own.  There was no one to help and support them; there was no one from the outside to deliver them. Back then, there was no State of Israel to stand up to evil and defend Jews everywhere.

SH Attendees at AIPAC Policy Conference
I spent the early part of this week attending the AIPAC (the America-Israel Public Affairs Committee) Policy Conference in Washington DC.  We spent three days hearing speeches from the luminaries of American politics, as well as great teachers and leaders. On the last day of the conference, we went up to Capitol Hill to meet members of Congress in their offices and discuss the need for a strong America-Israel relationship. In Congress, support for Israel is a bi-partisan issue. The support is nearly 100 percent, and often actually 100 percent.

As we celebrate Purim this year, let's give thanks that there is a strong Israel and a strong America-Israel relationship. Let us give thanks that in times of trouble and times of celebration, Israel is there for all Jews everywhere.

L'Shalom,

Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

Geocaching Mitzvah Project, April 18
Looking for a fun activity for the whole family? Zoe Berthold’s Bat Mitzvah Project is both a good time and for a good cause! Drop by The Grove (1421 Milwaukee Ave) in Glenview any time from 1-3 PM on Saturday, April 18, for an introduction to a real-life scavenger hunt called Geocaching. We will teach you how to use your smartphone to find containers called “geocaches” hidden all around. After finding the three geocaches that we’ve hidden with clues inside and solving the puzzle based off the clues, you get a prize. There is a suggested donation of $5, but 100% of the proceeds go to the Greater Chicago Food Depository! No registration required. Please email Julie Berthold at Avergirl@gmail.com with any questions. Click here to learn more.
