Lil Rev is coming this weekend! On Saturday, February 20 at 7:30pm, (doors open at 7:00) Coffee House Night - Concert Series is delighted to welcome the fabulous, award-winning Jewish entertainer, Lil Rev, a talented multi-instrumentalist and storyteller. Lil Rev has put together a special variety show filled with stories and songs for us. Known for his ukulele and harmonica stylings, he’s equally adept at old time banjo, flat- pick guitar and blues mandolin. Click here for a video preview of Lil’s amazing performance style. As always, this event is offered for a free-will donation.

Please be sure to click here to register to help us plan for our seating set-up. We want to be sure the Coffee House has enough seats for everyone!

See you on February 20 for an incredible evening of musical entertainment and camaraderie.  If you're interested in also helping with Front of the House or Baking, that would be terrific.  Please contact Margie at MargiePromoPro1@aol.com or indicate your volunteer interest on the registration/seating form.

“Lighting the Lamp”

Dear Friends,

Question: How do you light the Menorah lamp?  How do you set a heart on fire with passion and commitment?  How do you light the flame of Jewish identity that links a young adult to one’s people, heritage, and history?

Answer:  Ta’am Yisrael – the Eighth Grade Israel trip
I have just had the great honor of accompanying the Ta’am Yisrael trip for my fifth time.  Ta’am Yisrael offers the unique opportunity for Jewish eighth graders from Chicagoland to travel to Israel for a week in order to discover their personal connection to the land and people of Israel.

Eighth grade is the perfect time for the trip.  The participants have just celebrated their bar and bat mitzvah services and are still filled with an uplifting sense of achievement and pride.  They have not yet entered high school with all its pressure for grades and transcripts that prevents taking a week off to travel.

The students that go on Ta’am are a special and self-selected group.  They are our future leaders.  They are bright, motivated, confident, self-assured, and mature.  They are ready to travel internationally and welcome a peak experience of exploring the Holy Land.

Essentially, through Ta’am Yisrael, we bring our best and brightest to the Land of Israel and there, they are transformed.

This week’s Torah portion talks about lighting the Menorah lamp in the Tent of Meeting during the desert journeys of our people from slavery to freedom.  For the past week, I have seen hearts and minds lit with the fire of meaning, pride, and connection to Jewish life and heritage. For the nearly 180 participants, including the six from Shir Hadash, the menorahs have been lit within hearts and minds of some fine young adults.  When I look upon them, I know that Judaism’s future is in good hands.

Shabbat shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

EDUCATION ANNOUNCEMENTS

Sunday School, February 21
We're looking forward to seeing all our families ready to go at 9:00am!

New! School Advisory Committee Meeting, February 28
The next School Advisory Committee (SAC) meeting will be on Sunday, February 28 beginning at 9:15am. Even if you have never been before, new faces are always welcome to join this important committee. If you have any questions, please contact committee chair Lisa Burton-Radzely at shirhadashsac@gmail.com.

New! Parent Town Hall Meeting, March 13
Rabbi Seeg will be hosting a town hall meeting during Sunday School hours on March 13. This will be an opportunity to share the visioning and work that will have been done to that point, as well as some specifics as to the structure and content of the program. It will be an opportunity for you to ask questions and get excited about the future of youth education at Shir Hadash. The meeting will take place at Shir Hadash and will not affect the students’ programming for that day. Watch for the specific time to be announced soon and plan to join Rabbi Seeg for an engaging discussion!

Purim Carnival, March 20
The Purim Carnival is coming on March 20! We will begin with a shpiel (comedic theatrical-type performance of the Purim story) at 11:00am. The carnival itself will open at 11:30 and run until 1:00. There will be games, prizes and food; it’s going to be awesome!
We will still have school programming before the shpiel begins, so come for the learning and stay for the fun!

We also will need volunteers to help with set up, running games and food, and take down. You will receive in the coming weeks an invitation to sign up to help out. Please help us make the carnival as great as it can be! For more information, contact Rabbi Seeg at learning@shir-hadash.org.

New Attendance Incentive Policy
In an effort to inspire on-time attendance, we will be holding a raffle each Sunday morning at 9:00am. Students will be able to participate in the raffle if they are at Shir Hadash in the sanctuary before the 9:00am drawing. The winner each week will be entitled to a $5 gift card from SHOP Shir Hadash.

Additionally, any student who is on time four weeks in a row will be entitled to some special Shir Hadash swag! An excused absence will not count against the four in a row, but an unexcused absence will.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Sunday! Soup Kitchen Help Needed, February 21
We still have room for three more volunteer families! On Sunday, February 21, we will be preparing, cooking and serving over 90 meals for needy individuals at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church soup kitchen in Evanston.  This event will require volunteers to be available from 2:00 to 4:30 pm. We need a minimum of 25 volunteers; that's about 8-10 families. There is no age limit to volunteer, but from past experience, kids should be at least six years old to fully participate.

Each family will be responsible for bringing an entrée that will feed 10 to 15 individuals, one gallon of milk, one large bag of frozen mixed vegetables, one large bag of fruit (oranges, bananas, etc.) and dessert. Please Note: If you sign up to participate in this event but need to cancel at the last minute, you will still be expected to provide food even if you cannot attend.
Thank you in advance for your support! Please contact Mark Lenhart at mjlenhart@comcast.net should you have any questions.
