MEMBERSHIP AND UPCOMING EVENTS
It's time to renew your membership in Shir Hadash for the coming year. In an effort to streamline the process and reduce the use of paper, all our forms are now available on Shul Cloud. Click here for detailed information. (If you prefer to use paper forms for your registration, please contact our office at 847 498 8218.) Please complete your renewal by July 31. If you need assistance, contact Executive Director Geoff Prass at info@shir-hadash.org.
Due to schedule conflicts, we are postponing our next poker night to the fall so we will not be meeting this Saturday. Enjoy the rest of the summer!
Our next book will be The Hours Count, a novel by Jilllian Cantor. This work of historical fiction looks at the story of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg from the perspective of a neighbor who befriends Ethel.
We are changing the previously-announced location of our next meeting. We now will be meeting at the home of Sandy Weiss, 2144 Walters in Northbrook on next Wednesday, August 10. Our discussion will start at 7:30pm (we are postponing our potluck dinner to a future date). To RSVP, or for more information, contact Meryl Abensohn at abenkras@aol.com.

“Paying it Forward”
Dear Friends,
With this week’s Torah portion, we come to the end of the
fourth book of the Torah, the book of Numbers.
At this point the Children of Israel have arrived at the Jordan River
near Jericho and are ready to cross over.
The generation of the Exodus has died during the forty years of desert
wandering. Soon, a new generation born in freedom will enter the Holy Land.
What about all those who courageously left Egypt behind, but
died in the wilderness? What about their
hopes and visions for a new life of freedom?
What does Judaism say about their not reaching the Promised Land?
The Talmud tells a story about a certain man named Honi who
saw an old man planting a carob tree. He
asked the man how long it would take for the tree to bear fruit. “Seventy years,” was the reply. Honi than asked if the man thought that he
would live long enough to eat fruit from the tree. The man pointed to a number of mature
fruit-bearing trees nearby and replied, “Just as my fathers planted for me
before I was born, so do I plant for those who will come after me.”
Through these stories, Judaism teaches that we stand on the
shoulders of our ancestors who ‘planted’ for us – those who kept Judaism alive
through the ages, those who courageously left family, friends, and ancient
lands behind for America, and those who worked tirelessly so that we could have
a better life. Even though they did not
live to experience the lives of freedom and abundance that we lead, their
legacy and presence is still with us.
They live on through us. Their
hopes and dreams have been realized in us.
Judaism teaches that along with receiving so much from
previous generations comes paying it forward to the future. Like Moses, the generation of the Exodus, and
the man in Honi’s story, it is our sacred obligation to support and enable
future generations to realize our dreams and aspirations in them.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow
