Chicago Festival of Israeli Cinema, November 5 -- New Time!
We've had a great response to our group outing to see On the Map, an inspiring documentary about the underdog Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team of 1976-77 that toppled the mighty Soviet Union team for the European Cup. We've sold out of our first block of 20 tickets and now have only a few left! Tickets may also be ordered at www.israelifilmchi.org.
Please join us to see this outstanding film on Saturday, November 5 at the ArcLight Cinema in The Glen. Note: The start time of the film has been moved to 7:30pm to accommodate havdalah. The screening will include a Q&A with director Dani Menkin and Israeli basketball legend Tai Brody. Afterwards, we will gather at Wildfire, 1300 Patriot Blvd. in Glenview, for refreshments and conversation. (Individuals are responsible for their own food and beverages at Wildfire.) If you order tickets through the Festival website and also want to join us for dessert, please RSVP to Rebecca Rice, r.rice1@comcast.net, no later than Friday, November 1
Click here to register. Movie tickets are $13 for the film; please look for Rebecca or someone with a Shir Hadash sign in the lobby to receive your tickets. .Plan to be in line no later than 6:45 in order to get good seats!

Book Club Recap
Despite competition from the first game of the World Series, we had sixteen members enthusiastically discussing The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem. In Sarit Yishai- Levi's book, there was a wonderful description of life for Sephardic Jews in the twentieth century through several generations in one family. There also was an interesting family curse related to forbidden love with Ashkenazi women. We are fortunate to have the author be our speaker at this Friday night's service (see below for details). Hope to see you there.
CREATIVE WORSHIP AND RITUAL

Shabbat Evening Service, November 4, 7:30pm
As part of the service, we will welcome a special guest: Sarit Yishai-Levi, Israeli author of the international-bestseller The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem. The Shir Hadash Book Club has been reading this book, and we're delighted to now meet and hear from the author herself, in person. Don't miss it! Plus, we will be having a baby naming for Luba Rothblatt's great-grandson, Quinn Rush. Come and help the family celebrate! Oneg volunteers are needed for this event and others. Shabbat Noach
Torah – Genesis 6:9-11:32 / Haftarah – Isaiah 54:1-55:5
“Vote, Vote, Vote”
Dear Friends,
Here is a piece I shared two years ago on the Shabbat before the last
Federal election. I still applies to us today…
In last week’s Torah portion, Adam ate the apple, God found out, and
Adam hid saying, “It wasn’t my fault.”
In this week’s portion, Noah was told about the upcoming flood that
would destroy the world and he quietly built an ark to save his family, some
animals, and himself. In next week’s
portion, Abraham will learn of the impending annihilation of Sodom and Gemorah,
and he will voice his opinion and push back.
Abraham will argue with God to save the cities if there should be 50 or
45 or 30 or 20 or even 10 righteous individuals present.
Adam concealed himself. Noah
went along with the program. Abraham
spoke up. Thus, our tradition honors
Abraham, the founder of our Jewish tradition, because he argued and was willing
to confront even God in his pursuit of justice.
Abraham voted! Democracy is not a value found in the Bible, Talmud, or
traditional Judaism. Moses, Joshua, King
David, King Solomon and the great rabbinic sages never called for a
referendum. They never consulted with
the people on issues of governance. Only
recently have democratic principles entered into Jewish life and practice.
Citizenship first came to the Jewish world when Napoleon’s armies defeated
monarchies across Europe in the early 1800’s, effectively ending the Middle
Ages. Voting came to Jews here in America
after the great Jewish immigrations in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. It is a sacred right to be exercised with
honor and great respect.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

TOV Event: Soup Kitchen, November 6
For our next TOV event, please participate in the Evanston Soup Kitchen event described below in the Social Action section. A wonderful opportunity for families to make a difference together!
SOCIAL ACTION
Tikkun Olam Volunteers (TOV)
Needs Help
Our monthly social action projects (currently called Tikkun Olam
Volunteers, or TOV) have gotten off to a great start! It's too much work for a
couple of people to put it together every month, so we need help planning and
carrying out these activities. Whether you'd like to play a small part or a big
role for an activity (or more than one), please help out in some way. Getting
some assistance is the only way we can continue having social action projects
monthly. Please contact Lisa Burton Radzely at shirhadashsac@gmail.com if you'd
like to help or if you have any questions.
Volunteers Needed for Soup Kitchen, November 6
On Sunday, November 6, Shir Hadash will be preparing, cooking, and serving over 90 meals for needy individuals at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church soup kitchen in Evanston. This event will require volunteers to be available from 1:45 to 4:30pm. We need a minimum of 25 volunteers (about 10-12 families). There is no age limit to volunteer, but from past experience, kids should be at least 6 years old to fully participate.
Each family will be responsible for bringing an entrée that will feed 10 to 15 individuals, one gallon of milk, one large bag of frozen mixed vegetables, one large bag of fruit (oranges, bananas, etc.), and dessert.
If you are interested in helping, please contact Mark Lenhart as soon as possible at mjlenhart@comcast.net. Thank you in advance for your support!
