“If You Truly Will It…”
Dear Friends,
Jacob dreamed a dream. Running
away from his jealous and angry brother Esau, Jacob lay down with a stone as a
pillow and dreamed of a ladder connecting heaven and earth. On that ladder were the angels of God who
would protect him within the Land of Israel and during his journeys
beyond. He dreamed of being rescued and
being protected… and it was so.
Theodore Herzl dreamed a dream.
More than 120 years ago he dreamed that one day the Jewish people would
be a truly free people living in its own ancient land, the Land of Israel –
Zion and Jerusalem. He declared, “If you
will it, it is not a dream.” And it was so.
Soon we will light our Hanukkah candles and look deep into the flames and
dream our dreams. Let them be dreams of
health and happiness for ourselves, our families, and our friends. Let them be dreams of understanding,
coexistence, and cooperation amongst all the religions and peoples of the
world. Let them be dreams of peace.
For if you truly will it, then it is not a dream at all. It will become a reality. And it was so.

Monday Night Adult Ed Class: “Mussar as a Mindfulness Practice” December 12
Join us for our adult education course on Monday, December 12. Do you do yoga or meditate? Have you ever wished you could find a
mindfulness practice rooted in Judaism? Mussar is exactly that! Mussar is an
ethical, educational, and cultural movement that began in late 19th century
Lithuania. Over the past century, it has
transitioned into a way of encountering the self that focuses on character
development and self-awareness. Taught
by experienced practitioner Lynn Liebling, this session will serve as an
introduction to Mussar both as a general movement but even more as an
applicable mindfulness practice.
We will have a soup dinner beginning at 6:30pm, followed by the class beginning at 7:00. Please RSVP to Rabbi Seeg at learning@shir-hadash.org if you are planning to attend.

SOCIAL ACTION
Final Days! TOV Toy Drive Continues To December 13
Last chance to help us brighten the holiday season for kids in need! Tikkun Olam Volunteers (TOV) will collect holiday toys for children who otherwise will not receive any gifts.
We especially encourage gifts for teen boys, who tend to receive the fewest donations at holiday time. Fill A Heart 4 Kids will distribute them to teen boys living in group homes.Their wish lists include Lego sets, model airplane kits, decks of cards and other card games, board games, and science kits. Arts and crafts as well as coloring books would be enjoyed and help strengthen fine motor skills, and stuffed animals provide some physical comfort. Please no donations associated with violence, no ropes or string, and no toys requiring batteries. Collection buckets will be in the lobby through December 13.

JEWISH COMMUNITY NEWS
The Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago has advanced $500,000 to its overseas partners, the Jewish Agency for Israel and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, to help Israel cope with the unprecedented 480 fires that have erupted throughout the country. At least half of the fires have reportedly been the result of arson. Many of the tens of thousands of Israelis who were evacuated have now returned home, but 1,600 are homeless. Many other Israelis have lost their schools and places of employment. Thanks in part to the advance funds from JUF, on Sunday the Jewish Agency was able to begin providing every homeless Israeli family with a $1,000 emergency assistance grant.
If you are looking for ways to help, please consider a donation to JUF’s Annual Campaign or its Israel Fire Emergency Fund. Click here to donate on the JUF website.
