MEMBERSHIP AND UPCOMING EVENTS

New! Purim Shpiel, Megillah Reading and Carnival, March 12
The Purim Carnival is coming on March 12! We will begin with a shpiel (comedic theatrical-type performance of the Purim story), Megillah Reading and Costume Parade at 10:30am. The carnival itself will open at 11:00 and run until 12:30. There will be games, prizes and food; it’s going to be awesome!

We will still have school programming before the shpiel begins, so come in costume for the learning and stay for the fun!

We also need volunteers to help set up, run games, sell food, and take down. You can sign up by clicking here. Help us make the carnival as great as it can be! For more information, contact Rabbi Seeg at learning@shir-hadash.org.

New! WISH Hamentashen Bake and Sale
Women In Shir Hadash: It's that time of year...Hamentashen Bake and Sale!

We are baking in two shifts on Thursday, March 9 in the Shir Hadash kitchen:
  • Shift #1 -11:00am to  3:00pm
  • Shift #2 - 6:30pm to 9:00pm
RSVP to Julie Wellisch at juliewellisch@gmail.com as to which shift you will be attending. Bring your finished dough, filling, and cookie sheet(s).  Choose your favorite recipe!

Our Hamentashen Sale will be during the Purim Carnival on Sunday, March 12 from 10:30am-12:30pm. If you can be there, even for one hour, that would be great!  If you cannot attend the Thursday bake day, feel free to drop off finished product in baggies of three or four cookies (depending on size) on Sunday, March 12.

Rock and Roll Adult Purim, Saturday, March 11
Join us as the story of the Jewish festival of Purim is told through adapted lyrics of well-known rock and roll songs on Saturday evening, March 11. The event begins at 7:30pm and is open to the public.

The celebration of Purim is usually filled with laughter and joking. This event is rated PG-13, as the celebration of Purim can get quite bawdy and racy with innuendo and double-entendre.

A Fond Farewell to Lillian, March 17
It is with deep affection that we announce Lillian Zoloto, our Office Administrator, has decided to retire at the beginning of April. Lillian has been an integral part of this synagogue and community for 15 years, so to say that we will miss her is a great understatement. She has been the voice and face of Shir Hadash that has greeted all of us day after day. She has provided warmth and support that so many of us have appreciated during the many exciting changes through the years.

Please join us for Shabbat Services on March 17, when we will thank Lillian for her many years of devoted service and wish her well on this next chapter of her life. A festive oneg for the entire community will follow the service.

Book Club, March 21
Our next Book Club meeting will be Tuesday, March 21 at 7:30pm at the home of Cheryl Schultz, 1381 Sunnyside in Deerfield. We will be discussing the next book will The Seven Good Years, a memoir by Etgar Keret. This promises to be a uplifting, life-affirming, and humorous read. For more information or to RSVP, contact Meryl Abensohn at abenkras@aol.com.

Save the date! Coffee House Night, April 22
Our next evening of talent and treats will be Saturday, April 22. Everyone is welcome, as performers or audience members! Watch for more details to come. To help out with planning or to learn more, contact Margie at MargiePromoPro@aol.com.

Save the Date! Chili Cook-Off, April 29
Mark your calendar and get ready to show off your chili-making skills -- or just enjoy a delicious dinner prepared by fantastic SH cooks! The Great Shir Hadash Chili Cook-Off will be April 29, beginning at 6:30pm. More details will be on the website soon!

Shir Hadash Wins Big for First Trivia Night!
From Trivia Night Chair Sean Fisher-Rohde: Thanks to everyone who help make our first Trivia Night such a huge success. Together we raised over $2000 for our school. A special thank you to the following people whose help and contributions were invaluable: Geoff Prass, Carrie Matt, our emcee Chris Smith and his family, the Shir Hadash Board for all of their support, everyone who came out to play, those who contributed, and finally my wife and family for all of their support and hard work. Plans for the next one are already well underway (we’ll probably be moving the event into the Fall). Please contact me at srohde5@gmail.com if you’d like to be a part of the planning

Poster Brigade Help Needed
We are looking for a few volunteers to join the Shir Hadash Poster Brigade! Help us get the word out about our amazing community, upcoming events and more! You can help out on your own time, in your own neighborhood!

Help the synagogue post fliers and posters at restaurants, coffee shops and other key locations.  We even have a list of suggested locations all ready for you and it will only take you a few minutes from your day!  If you are interested, please contact our Executive Director, Geoff Prass at executivedirector@shir-hadash.org.

THE RABBI’S CORNER

March 3-4 2017 / 6 Adar 5777
Shabbat Terumah
Torah: Exodus 25:1 - 27:19     Haftarah: I Kings 5:26 - 6:13

“Holy Places”

Dear Friends,

This week’s Torah portion gives instruction for the construction of the mishkan, the portable shrine that the Children of Israel would use for worship during their journey from Egypt to the Holy Land.  Our ancestors brought donations to fashion the mishkan from the finest materials possible.  In essence, our ancestors were creating a holy place – their center of Jewish spirituality and national identity. They were demonstrating their faith in the future.

We do that, too, when we build our synagogues, Jewish community centers, summer camps, and even our cemeteries.  They are our touch points of Jewish culture, heritage, and identity. So, it is with a heavy heart and great concern that I take note of the wanton destruction of gravestones in Jewish cemeteries, anti-Semitic graffiti on synagogues, and the more than 100 bomb threats that have been called into Jewish community centers and synagogues across North America. This is more than vandalism.  They are attacks on our holy places.

We Jews are a people of justice, kindness, tolerance, coexistence, and love. We are also a people of self-respect, dignity, pride, and strength.  As we deal with the troubling events of recent weeks, let us find support and reassurance from our ancestors in the desert.  Despite the obstacles laid out before them, they kept on moving towards the Promised Land. Despite worry and doubt, they remained steadfast in pursuing their dream of freedom for all.  Despite fear and terror, they remained joyful and maintained their belief in the ultimate justice of their cause.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

YOUTH EDUCATION

Religious School, March 5
We will be happy to see all our students this Sunday at 9:15am.

School Advisory Committee (SAC), March 5
All school parents are encouraged to attend the next SAC meeting on March 5. We will share ideas and provide feedback on the school, as well as learn ways we can help the Sunday school.  Come to the kitchen at 10:30.

Pitch in for Purim!
We have a number of easy ways that you can help us make it the best carnival ever:
  • There are a handful of items that we are asking people to donate – things that will help us decorate, create additional games, and provide the carnival atmosphere that we all love. Click here to see our wish list. No donation is too small (or too big!), so please help out any way you can.
  • We are also accepting donations of excess “swag” – leftover toys, games, bar/bat mitzvah goodies, party favors – items that could be prizes for our carnival games.
  • Lastly, we are collecting items for a silent auction. If you have a skill or item to donate, or know another individual/organization/business that might want to donate, please contact Rabbi Seeg or Lisa Burton Radzely (shirhadashsac@gmail.com) as soon as possible.

ADULT EDUCATION

Sunday Morning Adult Ed Classes
Check out these engaging Adult Ed opportunities that meet during our Religious School hours. All are welcome.
  • Torah and Philosophy, 9:30-10:30am
  • Learning the Shir Hadash Prayer Book, 10:30-11:30am -- We will be studying the Amidah, or Standing Prayer, including its meanings, origins, and significance in modern Jewish life.
  • Modern Hebrew, 11:30am-12:30pm

      SOCIAL ACTION

Mac & Cheese Drive for Food Pantry
When you come to Shir Hadash for a service, school, a program, or a meeting, bring boxes of mac & cheese to donate to a food pantry. Shake them as a grogger, or just drop them in the donation box.  We will collect through March 12.  The donation box is located in the lobby.

Support Oliver Nye’s Bar Mitzvah Project, March 12

Along with the support of his School District 109 Orchestra Teacher, Oliver and his fellow orchestra members will be performing at the Deerfield Barnes & Noble on Sunday, March 12, Noon-3:00. He will be seeking donations to raise money for the University of Chicago Celiac Disease Research Center. Oliver was diagnosed with Celiac's Disease in late 2014, so this is of personal interest to him. Sweet Ali's, a gluten-free bakery in Glenview, will be providing sponsorship in support of this fundraising effort.
