Rehearsals start July 26
If you were at our High Holiday Services (HHS) last year you experienced the wonderful sounds of our Lahaka (Shir Hadash's choir), led by our new music director, Marek Rachelski. If you sing or play a musical instrument and want to learn more about Lahaka, come to a rehearsal and give us a try! There is no obligation and you don't even need to know how to read music. We provide all sheet music and we'll be working on a learning CD.
Our first rehearsal will be Wednesday, July 26 at 7:15 at the synagogue. The full rehearsal schedule will be posted soon to the website calendar and the SH App. All are welcome! For more information, contact Ken Wexler (ken.wexler@lockton.com or 847-769-8247).

“Women vs. Men”
Dear Friends,
Who are more righteous, men or women? In this week’s Torah portion, an Israelite Tzelofehad has died and his daughters come before Moses demanding to inherit his estate. In the absence of sons, daughters claim that they should have inheritance rights. This presents a challenge to the established order. After consultation with God, Moses declares that indeed the daughters can inherit if there are no sons.
What chutzpah! What gave the daughters the courage to make their society changing claim? Our tradition teaches that the women of Israel were always more righteous than the men. The medieval book Tze’nah u’Re’enah explains that when Aaron called for the making of the Golden Calf, only the men came forward and donated their golden earrings to fashion the idol. The women did not participate. When the twelve spies returned from the Land of Israel and ten gave their frightening report, the women did not believe them. They stayed faithful and sided with Joshua and Calev who encouraged the people to enter the Land without fear. From this the tradition teaches that through the 40 years of wandering, only men died in the wilderness. All the women merited to enter the Land.
Does that mean that women are better than men? No, not at all. Judaism is teaching us that we must approach new situations with strength, determination, and sound judgment. There is no need to run after the latest fad because it’s generating a buzz, or accept an old custom if it is no longer relevant. Herd mentality and peer pressure have no place in Judaism. Study well, think things through, and zay a mentsch – be a good person.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow
