High Holiday Registration and the Book of Life
The High Holidays are here! Many of you have registered to attend our High Holiday services - thanks very much for doing so. (It makes it much easier to plan when we know how many people are coming.)  If you have not gone to the High Holiday page on our website to register, please do so now.
And when you register, please remember to add the names of your departed loved ones to our Book of Life, which will be printed and distributed on Yom Kippur for the Yizkor service. If you have already registered for the Holidays, but forgotten to go onto the Book of Life page to include your names, here is the link.
As always, if you have any questions about the Holidays, just send a note to cwr@shir-hadash.org , and we will get back to you.

Office Schedule During the Holidays
Please note that the Shir Hadash office will be closed on Thursday and Friday, September 21-22 in observance of Rosh Hashanah, and on Saturday, September 30 for Yom Kippur.

THE RABBI’S CORNER

September 22-23, 2017 / 3 Tishrei 5778
Shabbat Ha’azinu - Shuva
Torah: Deuteronomy 32:1 - 32:52
Haftarah: Hosea 14:2-10; Micah 7:18-20; Joel 2:15-27 | Shabbat Shuva
“Our Place in History”
Dear Friends,
What is our people’s place in history?  As we approach Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, we must ponder our past, present, and future as a people.
Abba Eban taught this about Jewish history and purpose. “A robust sense of identity has not prevented this people from sending the repercussions of its influence far and wide into the oceans of universal history.  It is when historic Israel is most persistently distinctive that its universal vocation is enlarged.  The lesson of history is plain.  There is no salvation or significance for the Jew except when he aims high and stands straight within his own authentic frame of values.” (My People)
This Yom Kippur, recognize and celebrate the place of the Jewish people in world history.  Be inspired by our ongoing mission, to be a Light Unto the Nations – bringing compassion, kindness, justice, fairness, and love the world.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow
