Saturday! Coffee House Night – Open Mic Style, October 21
After a summer hiatus, “Coffee House Night – Open Mic Style” returns this Saturday, October 21!  You do not need to be a performer to join us at this event - it's for everyone who wants to enjoy live local talent. Come enjoy a talent-filled evening with good friends, beverages and goodies, our fabulous sound system and YOU!  You won’t want to miss this event – you never know who will be there! (A free will donation is requested.)

Doors open at 6:30pm, performances will run from about 7:00pm to 10:30pm or so. If you are a performer, you can share any talent – music, storytelling, dance, your choice. There is a two song/story rotation or performance time of about 10 minutes.  Performers are encouraged to come around 6:30 to sign-in, tune instruments, warm-up voices, etc. before Coffee House Night starts.

In an effort to try to stay within our scheduled event time, we are going to try to limit sign-ins to 20 total slots. Time permitting, we may have additional one song/story slots available or even encore opportunities. Please contact Margie at MargiePromoPro1@aol.com to advise her if you’re interested in performing so she can keep track of your tech requirements, plan set-ups for acts, and update a preliminary talent list (put “Talent” in the email subject line). Of course, your slot is not secure until you arrive and actually sign-in on the Performer’s Sign-Up list. Or you can click here to register on the SH website. See you on Saturday!

New! New Member Breakfast, October 22
Meet for breakfast, a nosh, or a cup of coffee and get to know other new members! What could be better than schmoozing and making new friends over food? We’ll gather at The Continental, 788 S. Send a Kid to Israel Partnership Open Now
The SKIP savings incentive program was created to anticipate and save for our children’s Jewish education. SKIP allows families, their congregations and JUF/JF to become partners in planning for a young person’s future Israel Experience. Contributions from JUF and Shir Hadash can be made to an interest-bearing savings account for students. Students in 3rd-6th grade are eligible to enroll in SKIP; families are eligible to contribute to their children’s SKIP account for a maximum of seven years (3rd-9th grade). Funds may be used through age 26. Registration closes November 15. For more information please contact Cindy Grills at (847) 409-3707 or homes@cindygrills.com.

Memorial Wall Dedicated
During Simchat Torah services on Sunday, we dedicated our new Memorial Wall.  Rabbi Eitan read each person’s plaque and provided a wonderful opportunity to remember loved ones who have passed.  Opportunities to purchase a plaque for a loved one are still available.  See the Ongoing Fundraisers Section near the end of the Newsletter for additional information. Help Us Improve Our Website
An engaging, user-friendly website is very important in helping us communicate with our members and for making information available to people who might want to join our Community.  We are looking at ways to improve our website.  If you have technical skills in website design or you would enjoy crafting descriptions about Shir Hadash for the website, then we can use your help!  Or even if you just have suggestions on how to improve the website, please share your thoughts with us.  If you are interested in providing website input or helping with the project, please contact Glenn Graff at nflsunday1966@aol.com.

Israeli Film Festival Outing, November 5
As part of the Chicago Festival of Israeli Film, Shir Hadash is sponsoring a screening of The Wedding Plan at 2:00pm on November 5 at the ArcLight Theater in The Glen. Come to the film and join other Shir Hadashniks afterwards for refreshments at Bravo Cucina, a short walk from the theater. Our initial block of 20 tickets sold out, but not to worry: you can also get individuals tickets through the festival website.

If you are planning to come to Bravo after the film, please click here to RSVP for that as well so we can have the restaurant prepare tables for us. (That includes people who have already signed up for the movie.) Looking forward to a great turnout and a fun evening!

“Let’s Make Our House a Home”
As promised, a survey is being prepared to ask for your input on what projects you would like to see the Board undertake to improve our building.  Look for it after the Holidays and please take the time to respond to it. Let's work together to make the improvements you want.

CREATIVE WORSHIP AND RITUAL

Shabbat Evening Service and Wine & Cheese Oneg, Friday October 20, 7:30pm
This Friday night, we pray, sing and - well, argue a little. Why argue? Well, arguing is really appropriate this Shabbat, because the Torah portion for this week is about - the Tower of Babel!  How does this ancient story still resonate for us today? What are the lessons that we can learn, to guide our community values, political conduct, and overall health of body and spirit? Join us for a fun service and a lively discussion!
But wait, there's more! Of course, we always have an oneg afterward. This time, it's a special one: we welcome our High Holiday Members for wine and cheese. All members, High Holiday Members, and others are welcome. And do bring desserts and snacks (so we can have those in addition to the wine and cheese).

Smashing Simchat Torah Celebration
On Sunday the Sanctuary was packed with members celebrating Simchat Torah.  The celebration started with the Shir Hadash Klezmer Band playing as the Torahs were carried around the Sanctuary and people danced and sang.  Then the entire Torah was unrolled and held up by adults as Rabbi Eitan led us through the story of Torah.  We finished with an oneg and taffy apples.  It was a wonderful event and a great conclusion to this year's High Holidays. THE RABBI’S CORNER

October 20-21, 2017 / 1 Cheshvan 5778
Shabbat Noach
Torah: Genesis 6:9 - 11:32
Maftir: Numbers 28:9 - 28:15 | Shabbat Rosh Chodesh
Haftarah: Isaiah 66:1 - 66:24 | Shabbat Rosh Chodesh

“Tower of Babel”
Dear Friends,

What went wrong at the Tower of Babel? After all, the coming together of so many to work together in creating a beautiful and complex building could have ushered in a time of great cooperation, understanding, and humility. Instead, it led only to infighting and people believing that they were more powerful than God. Instead of success and advances in human civilization, building the Tower led to suffering and fighting.

Pirkei de-Rabbi Eliezer (a rabbinic period Torah commentary) offers this teaching story suggesting that the true tragedy of the enterprise was the lack of regard for human life.

“The tower was built with seven steps on the eastside and seven steps on the west side, and it was seven miles high. It took a person one year to climb from the bottom to the top The bricks were carried up from one side, and a line of workers went down on the other side. If a worker fell down and died, they paid no attention to him. But, if a brick fell, they would all sit and weep.  ‘What a loss,’ they would say. ‘Look how long it will take until we can bring another brick to take its place.’”

The message is clear. As our civilization advances in technology and knowledge, let us always be sure to value human life and values above the objects and things we create.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

SOCIAL ACTION

Volunteer clip art.jpg
Soup Kitchen Volunteers Needed, November 12
On Sunday November 12, from 2:00 to 4:00pm, Shir Hadash will be serving over 90 meals for needy individuals in our community. In order to provide the food and support for this meaningful project, we need six to eight families (20-25 people total) who are able to prepare, cook, and serve at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church interfaith soup kitchen in Evanston.
Each family will be responsible for bringing a precooked meat or pasta entrée (in disposable dish, no vegetarian please), one large bag frozen mixed vegetables, and a dessert to feed approximately 15 people. If this is too much for you to supply individually, please feel free to join with another family to bring a meal. This is a great family event because there is no age limit to volunteer, but from past experience, kids should be at least six years old to safely participate in this event.
If you are interested in helping, please contact Mark Lenhart at mjlenhart@comcast.net.

We are also open to suggestions and ideas for future film nights.

Israel-Related Discussions -- Suggestions Welcome
Synagogue members enjoyed two Israel-related discussions on Yom Kippur. One highlighted the components of Jewish identity and the other reviewed a member's trip to Israel as part of a congressional delegation. Are there other topics that members would like to see covered in a discussion? Please let Ed or Burton know. The Israel Committee would like to offer ongoing discussion sessions related to Israel and the Mideast.
