We will meet on Thursday, December 14 at 7:30pm at the home of Sandy Weiss, 2144 Walters Avenue in Northbrook. Please RSVP to Meryl Abensohn at abenkras@aol.com.

Reminder: Building Closed on Wednesdays
In our ongoing attempts to save energy where possible, the synagogue building will be closed on Wednesdays during business hours. If you need to contact our staff for an emergency, please call the synagogue office at 847-498-8218. The line is being forwarded and someone will either answer the phone or get back to you as soon as they are able.

“Let’s Make Our House a Home”
As promised, a survey is being prepared to ask for your input on what projects you would like to see the Board undertake to improve our building.  Look for it after the Holidays and please take the time to respond to it. Let's work together to make the improvements you want.

“Shabbat Sweet” Evening Service, Friday, November 17, 7:30pm
Billy Kaplan and Shabbat Sweet return to Shir Hadash this week! Don’t miss our special musical Shabbat event, an original contemporary journey of music, reading, and prayer. Performers will include musicians and singers from both the Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation (JRC) and Shir Hadash. “Shabbat Sweet” is a Friday night service that blends ancient Jewish prayers with original melodies by JRC musician and youth leader Billy Kaplan. The lively, soulful melodies have a freshness that manages to seem familiar to many. Billy will be joined by Shir hadash singers and musicians.  Don’t miss this unique and exciting Shabbat experience!

Shabbat Morning Bat Mitzvah Service, Saturday November 18, 10:00am

THE RABBI’S CORNER

November 17-18, 2017 / 29 Cheshvan 5778
Shabbat Toledot
Torah: Genesis 25:19 - 28:9
Haftarah: I Samuel 20:18 - 20:42 | Shabbat Machar Chodesh
“Becoming Our Best Selves”
Dear Friends,
Nature or Nurture – What is our road in life?  Are we to accept the personalities and styles with which we are born or can we change and improve?  This is the challenge placed before Jacob and Esau in this week’s Torah portion.  Esau is an outdoorsman and a hunter.  Jacob prefers the tent and studying.  Esau is quick tempered and rash, while Jacob is patient and methodical.
In the Genesis Rabbah commentary on the Torah 63:10, we find the following analysis of the brothers: “Rabbi Pinchas said in Rabbi Levi’s name that Esau and Jacob were like a myrtle and a wild rosebush growing side by side.  When they had fully grown, one produced a sweet fragrance and the other produced thorns.  For thirteen years, both Esau and Jacob studied at school.  Afterwards, Jacob continued to study, and Esau became an idol worshipper.  Jacob had learned that answers to questions came slowly and through hard work.  Esau wanted immediate and easy answers.”
Nature or nurture?  We are both.  The important teaching of Jewish tradition is that each one of us can grow and improve.  Each one of us can become our best selves.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow
