Mussar Study Group, September 6
Mussar is a centuries old Jewish body of teachings, a perspective, and a disciplined practice that provides distinctively Jewish answers to the sorts of questions any thinking person asks about life. Mussar provides guidance in identifying your uniquely personal path of spiritual growth and offers practices to help bring about that growth.

Maot Chitim: 4,500 Meals Packed!
Shir Hadash participated in Maot Chitim's initiative to deliver holiday meals to Jewish households throughout Chicagoland. On August 19, Shir Hadash members worked alongside other Chicagoland congregations and other Jews in order to fill boxes with food, wine, memorial candle, and other essentials to celebrate Rosh Hashana. It was a wonderful mitzvah and a fulfilling, meaningful morning.

Volunteer Office Help Needed
Our administrator Julie Wellisch would greatly appreciate some volunteer help around the Shir Hadash office as we get busy with membership and High Holiday registration. No experience required, just a positive attitude and some free time! In particular, we have the following roles to fill:
  • On the second and fourth Friday of each month, we have the Russian Holocaust survivors group that meets here in the morning from 9:30 through the Chair Yoga class at noon. Volunteers are needed to help answer the door and direct people to their meeting location.
  • On the second Tuesday of every month, we have the Jewish War Veterans of Buffalo Grove meeting at 9:30 - 12:00. Volunteers can help with coffee and also answering the door and directing people.
There are plenty of other jobs to do around the office as well. Please contact Julie at admin@shir-hadash.org and let her know the times you’re available to help. Thank you!

We will study texts together, followed by a screening of the PBS documentary Raise the Roof, the story of the 10-year restoration of the Gwoździec synogogue in Poland. Bring a treat to share in our dessert buffet after the film.

“Making Shalom”

Dear Friends,

Shalom means so much more than ‘peace’ – a cessation of warfare and fighting. Shalom means wholeness, completion, balance, and harmony.  In this week’s Torah portion we find a host of rules and regulations for daily life, all designed to bring peace to community and society as a whole. There are rules for returning lost property, fair treatment of slaves, raising a fallen animal, marriage and divorce, money transactions, inheritance, fair weights and measures, and so much more.

The root of the word shalom (peace) is the root of the word shalem (to pay). When you exchange money for an item, the transaction must leave both buyer and seller feeling whole and complete – shalem. When weights and meaures are fair and honest, then both buyer and seller will feel whole and complete – shalem.  When a lost article is returned, then both finder and owner will feel complete – shalem.

The principle is clear. We can all do our part in bringing peace/shalom to our world simply by living life with compassion, fairness, justice, honesty, and love.

Zay a mentsch – Be a good person. Help each other.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow
