“All of our Senses”
Dear Friends,
How do we take in the world with all our senses? In this week’s Torah portion, the beginning of the Book of Leviticus, there is a long discussion about the sacrificing of animals as a form of worship. One of the many things described is the use of incense to enhance the ritual. Perhaps the Torah is telling us to go beyond sight and sound when we experience life. Soon we will celebrate Purim with all its joy of deliverance from Haman’s evil plans. One month later, we will meet around our seder tables to recall our people’s deliverance from Egyptian slavery. All of our senses, sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch must come into our experience.
As we feel the winter beginning to ebb and the spring drawing closer, I encourage you to heighten your awareness of the world and all its glory. Let all of our senses intensify the honor of being Jewish and the delight of being alive.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow
