"Shabbat Sweet" Musical Service, November 15, 7:30 p.m. - Celebrate Shabbat Vayera with us as Billy Kaplan and “Shabbat Sweet” return to Shir Hadash. “Shabbat Sweet” is an original contemporary journey of music, reading, and prayer that blends ancient Jewish prayers with original melodies by JRC musician and youth leader Billy Kaplan. The lively and soulful melodies have a freshness that stirs the heart and lifts the spirit. Please bring a treat to share at our oneg following the service.
Sponsor an Oneg! Having a birthday, anniversary or remembrance? You can sponsor an oneg to celebrate. A dessert oneg is $136 and everybody appreciates and enjoys your hospitality. The donation covers all food, including a special celebration cake. Please contact Nancy Kekst, execdir@shir-hadash.org to make arrangements.
November 15-16, 2019 / 18 Heshvan 5780 /Shabbat Vayera
Torah Portion: Genesis 18:1-22:24 / Haftarah Portion: II Kings 4:1-37
“Hospitality”
Dear Friends,
In this week’s Torah portion, three weary travellers came within sight of Abraham’s tent. The story tells how upon seeing the men, Abraham jumped up and ran towards them to invite them into his tent. We gave them a shady place to rest, washed their feet, and served them a hearty meal.
From this story we learn the important Jewish value of hospitality. Furthermore, Abraham’s example teaches us to be zealous in our efforts to help those in need. When possible, offer help even before we are asked for assistance. Be kind and gracious when aiding others.
It’s a mitzvah – a righteous act!
Zay a mentsch – Be a good person.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

Tonight! Mussar Discussion Group, November 14, 7:30 pm -- Life repeatedly challenges us. How do we translate high-level concepts of ethical living to this moment in time? Mussar is a Jewish practice that guides us on this path. Shir Hadash's Mussar Study Group discusses the core text Everyday Holiness by Alan Morinis. For more information, contact Lynn Liebling, lliebling@sbcglobal.net or Kayla Shonberg, klashon74@gmail.com.

Sunday! Chicago Festival of Israeli Film, November 17 -- Shir Hadash is going to the movies this Sunday for the annual Chicago Festival of Israeli Film. Join us at the ArcLight Theater in Glenview for "Israeli Men in Shorts" at 5:15 p.m. (A few tickets in the SH block were still available at press time; click here for details and registration.) Tickets are $15 each. After the films, we will walk to a nearby restaurant for a nosh and conversation. Shir Hadash is a sponsor of the Festival thanks to a generous donation by Susan E. Cohen and Jerry Carl.

Saturday Night! Coffee House Night – Open Mic Style, November 16 -- It’s time to enjoy some great entertainment at “Coffee House Night – Open Mic Style.” You do not need to be a performer to join us at this event - it's for everyone who wants to enjoy live local talent, so please pass the word along. Doors open at 6:30pm, performances will run from about 7:00pm to 10:30pm.
WE NEED Coffee House Night Team Members This Event! If you’re interested in volunteering to help with set-up, the Treat and Beverage Bar (Bake Sale) or Front of the House, please contact Margie at MargiePromoPro1@aol.com.
If you are a performer, please share your talent – music, storytelling, dance, etc. There is a two song/story rotation or performance time of about 10 minutes. You might want to come around 6:30 to sign-in on the performance list, tune your instruments, exercise your voice, and get your treats and coffee/tea before the Show begins. Please click here or contact Margie at MargiePromoPro1@aol.com and put “Talent” in the subject line for performers or put “Treat” in the subject line if you are planning to bring a savory or sweet treat.
In an effort to try to stay within our scheduled event time, we are going to limit sign-ins to about 22 total slots. Please remember, your slot is not secure until you arrive and sign-in on the Performer’s Sign-Up list.
See you on Saturday for our next talent-filled evening with good friends, beverages and goodies, our fabulous sound system and YOU! You won’t want to miss this event – you never know who will be there! (A free will donation is requested.)

Book Club, December 19 -- At our next meeting we will be talking about The Lake on Fire, a novel by Rosellen Brown. The epic narrative follows 19th-century Jewish immigrants as they move from rural Wisconsin to industrialized Chicago at the time of the Columbian Exposition. Join us for a lively discussion at a member's home and bring a nosh to share! To RSVP and for location details, contact the office at admin@shir-hadash.org or (847)498-8218.
SOCIAL ACTION

Final Week! Winter Warmth Drive: Gently-Used and New Winter Outerwear and Accessories, now through November 17 -- We are having a winter warmth drive for local families. Gently-used and new hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, jackets, snowpants, and snowboots are welcomed. They will be distributed to local families who need assistance staying warm this winter. There will be a collection bin in the lobby from October 20 through November 17. If you have any questions, please email SocialActionSH@gmail.com or ask our Social Action Chair, Lisa Burton Radzely.

This Sunday! Winter Warmth Shopping with JUF Funds- November 17, 10:00am-noon - We have the funding, but we need shoppers! JUF Chanukah Coat Club has given Jewish Child and Family Services funding to purchase jackets, mittens or gloves, hats, snowpants, and snowboots for their clients. JCFS needs volunteers to find the items in the store, and that's where you can help! We will go to the Wheeling Target on November 17, 10 am until 12 pm. It is a fulfilling experience to know that you are keeping a child warm this winter, and it's fun to shop for these items, especially since you aren't paying! Donations to JUF Chanukah Coat Club are welcomed to help fund this valuable program, and volunteer time as shoppers is vital to the program's existence. Email SocialActionSH@gmail.com or talk with our Social Action Chair, Lisa Burton Radzely, to sign up to be a shopper or if you have questions.

Sunday! Global Day of Jewish Learning, November 17 -- Join Reconstructing Judaism on Sunday, November 17 online for a live-streamed talk with Rabbi David. A. Teutsch, Ph.D. The Global Day of Jewish Learning is a project to unite Jewish communities across the world through study of our shared texts. This year’s Global Day theme is “Speaking Volumes”. From ancient arguments to modern meanings, from raising our voices to remaining silent, people the world over will explore how and why words matter. Rabbi Teutsch's presentation at 12:00 p.m. CST, Feedback that Works: The Art of Tochecha, begins with what Rambam (Maimonides) says about the obligation to offer rebuke and what makes such conversations effective, considers some contemporary situations that need our feedback, and looks at how we overcome our internal resistance to addressing wrongdoing. Click here to join the livestream at 12:00 p.m. CST on November 17.
Immigration: Then and Now, November 20 -- Adult Jewish Education Co-op (AJEC) invites you to an exploration of some of the key issues of immigration led by Dr. Joyce Witt. What did our grandparents and great-grandparents have to deal with as they made their way to this country? What is different today, and how does Judaism teach us about the way immigrants should be treated? The presentation will be held at Temple Chai, 1670 Checker Road in Long Grove from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Admission is $18, cash or check; no preregistration required.
ONGOING FUNDRAISERS
Twelve Tribes Bimah Panels: Only Three Panels Left to Dedicate! -- Celebrating our fifth anniversary in our building, our Twelve Tribes bimah ark panels are a combined creation of artists Maureen Fisher Schweit and Abe Schor, who worked together on concept, design, and colors.
You are invited to participate in this fundraising historic project by dedicating all or part of a panel. Each panel dedication is $1,800; panels may be dedicated by more than one person and families may pool resources to dedicate one panel (e.g, $180 each by 10 people). Donors will be acknowledged on our new donor wall next to the Simcha Tree. The panel dedications will remain in perpetuity, or as long as the art remains in our sanctuary. (They will not expire in 18 years as originally stated.) To learn more about the Bimah Panels, click here. For questions, panel reservation, choice and payment options, contact Executive Director Nancy Kleine Kekst at (216) 789-2452 (mobile) or email execdir@shir-hadash.org.
