MEMBERSHIP NEWS AND EVENTS

Family Game Night via Zoom, July 18 -- The Family Activity Committee is getting ready to host our next "Let's Play" event. We will be playing board games virtually on July 18, starting at 7:00 p.m. in an all-ages event.  Since our games can be number dependent, we need to know how many people will be playing with us.  Registration will open soon -- please register via Shul Cloud for each device you will be using to log in. As always, children younger than 12 will need to be accompanied by an adult.  Once you've registered, watch for an email with the evening's menu of events.  Please direct all questions to elliott.simon@rocketmail.com.
Institutional Racism & History of Racism in the US: 2-part virtual class on July 19 and 26 -- "There are No Racist Americans; It's Just Racist America." What does Rabbi Amram Abraham mean by this statement? In this 2-part class, he will talk about institutional racism and the history of racism in the U.S. The class is designed to help participants understand how racism has evolved from slavery into the structured racism of contemporary America. Institutional racism is structured in a way that American communities can preserve racism without being perceived as actual racists. Participants will explore the evolution of racism in today's business language as well as the pedagogy of our educational system, all of which lead to the acceptance, defense, and overall expectation of racism. The classes will occur 11:15am-12:30pm on July 19 and 26. Zoom link will be distributed as the date approaches. Registration is appreciated here. This program is free; voluntary contributions are welcomed to cover program costs. If you would like to donate, click here, select Social Action from the dropdown list, and write Antiracism Programs in the payment notes. Email our Social Action Chair, Lisa Burton Radzely, at SocialActionSH@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Book Club: New Selection -- Our next book club Zoom meeting will be on August 20; watch the weekly newsletter for updated information and links. We will discuss The Weight of Ink, a novel by Rachel Kadish. Set in London of the 1660s and of the early twenty-first century, The Weight of Ink is the interwoven tale of two women of remarkable intellect: Ester Velasquez, an emigrant from Amsterdam who is permitted to scribe for a blind rabbi, just before the plague hits the city; and Helen Watt, an ailing historian with a love of Jewish history.   As the novel opens, Helen has been summoned by a former student to view a cache of seventeenth-century Jewish documents newly discovered in his home during a renovation. Enlisting the help of Aaron Levy, an American graduate student as impatient as he is charming, and in a race with another fast-moving team of historians, Helen embarks on one last project: to determine the identity of the documents’ scribe, the elusive “Aleph.”

Smile! Special Family Photo Session Opportunity -- There is an upside to being homebound with your family in the summer. It's the perfect time to take a family portrait! Our congregant Annette Leibovitz, who owns Mitzvah Photography, is offering mini sessions to take family portraits outside at your home or in a nearby area in a socially distant manner (and she wears a mask!).  Have some fun and update your family photos. The family will receive all the digital images!  Schedule with several neighbors the same day and get a discount. The fee is just $75, and she will donate $25 back to Shir Hadash. All we ask is for you to give the synagogue one great family image that we can use on our website, in publicity (no names), and in our membership directory.   To book your portrait, contact Annette Leibovitz at 847-913-5588 or write mitzvahphoto@aol.com.

Camp Havaya@Home, Sunday, July 12 – Saturday, July 25 :  "Safe at home, hearts at camp." All Havaya@Home programs will be online, primarily via Zoom and Facebook Live.  Approximately five programs will be offered daily, geared to appeal to a wide variety of kids.  While most sessions will be one-time opportunities, kids can choose to participate in as many (or as few) as they'd like. There will also be week-long art studios for which interested young artists can register in advance. Havaya@Home programs are primarily intended for entering third through ninth graders with additional opportunities for younger kids and older teens.  All are free and open to Havaya campers, as well as members of Reconstructionist congregations, and those in the wider community who share our values and want to have fun. More details, including schedules and sign-on information, will be available in late June.
