“Prayer for Israel”

Dear Friends,

As violence and fighting breaks out in Israel, I offer you the prayer for the state of Israel.  It calls for peace and security for Israel and her neighbors. It calls for Israel’s independence as a free nation in its ancient homeland. It calls for honorable, compassionate, and just leadership.  It calls for the life and safety of those who protect Israel.  I encourage you to read it this shabbat.

Rock and champion of Israel, please bless the state of Israel, first fruit of the flourishing of our redemption.  Guard it in the abundance of your love.  Spread over it the shelter of your peace.  Send forth your light and truth to those who lead and judge it, and to those who hold elective office.  Establish in them through your presence, wise counsel, that they might walk in the way of justice, freedom, and integrity.  Strengthen the hands of those who guard our holy land.  Let them inherit salvation and life.  And give peace to the land, and perpetual joy to its inhabitants.  Appoint for a blessing all our kindred of the house of Israel in all the lands of their dispersion.  Plant in their hearts a love of Zion.  And for all our people everywhere, may God be with them, and may they have the opportunity to go up to the land.  Cause your spirit’s influence to emanate upon all dwellers of our holy land.  Remove from their midst hatred and enmity, jealousy and wickedness.  Plant in their hears love and kinship, peace, and friendship.  And soon fulfill the vision of your prophet: “Nation shall not lift up sword against nation.  Let them learn no longer ways of war.”
And let us say: Amen.

L’Shalom (In Peace),
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

MEMBERSHIP NEWS AND EVENTS

Covid 19 Update -- As you may know, the CDC announced this week that it will be easing its COVID-19 guidelines and masking requirements.  Governor Pritzker announced the same for Illinois on Monday.   It continues to be a rapidly changing situation. We at Shir Hadash will continue to look for further guidance from both the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) as we plan for all our members.

We are pleased to say we are moving ahead! There are several outdoor events in the works. First up is a Religious School Closing Dinner on May 23 on our green space. Next will be an outdoor service, currently being planned for June 4, and there are talks regarding additional outdoor services in July and August.

Indoors, we have been working on several small group events as well. We will be holding a Bat Mitzvah on May 22, and two weddings in June.  While these events are by invitation only and not open to the full membership, we continue to look at the rapidly changing conditions as we evaluate how and when we can offer more indoor opportunities for our full community.

Additionally, based upon feedback from calls to all of our school parents, we are making plans for in-person Sunday School this fall.

For those who are not yet ready to participate in-person services, please know that Zoom will continue to be offered.

Our building is open for staff, and we anticipate it will be available for at least some congregant activities such as small committee meetings in the near future.

As always, if you have questions, you can contact President Marc Fargotstein, Executive Vice President Stuart Aizenberg, or the office staff.

Sunday: Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council Presents Virtual Tour of Israel, May 23, 5:00 p.m. --  Join in an interfaith tour of Israel via Zoom, presented by the NWSIC, on Sunday, May 23. Click here for contact information.

Buffalo Grove Pride Drive, Sunday June 6, Noon to 3:00 p.m. -- All the fun of a parade, within your own car.  Shir Hadash is delighted to be a sponsor for this community event.  Residential lawns will be decorated with pride decor, balloon art by Balloons by Tommy, music, rainbow treats and more! Wave to friendly folks outside their homes from 12-3pm or drive around any time to check out the decor! Route maps will be available by the end of May on the event website.

Save the Date! Max and Benny's Box Pickup, June 11 -- Our Max and Benny's food box fundraiser returns in June!  Watch for order details coming soon.  Pickup will be at Shir Hadash on Friday, June 11 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.

Book Club New Selection; Meeting on June 17, 7:30 p.m. -- On June 17, Book Club will meet to discuss our next selection: The Liar by Ayelet Gundar-Goshen.
