Building Update
Here are some highlights of the many construction projects moving forward at the synagogue:
Beautiful Jerusalem Stone for the Ark!

  • The hardwood floor for bima and ramp are in place, beautifully varnished.
  • The Jerusalem stone for the ark arrived on Tuesday.
  • The bathroom work is nearing completion and all bathrooms are functional!
  • The classrooms will be painted this week, with an energizing palette including colors from our logo.
  • The custom door frames should be in next week.
  • The wiring for the new emergency lighting, signage, and strobe lights is in process.
  • Our permanent signage is being created.  In the meantime, we expect two temporary banners to go up on the property by the end of this week.
  • New phone and internet lines are coming in this week.  We expect to put WiFi throughout our spaces.
All the long hours of work are really bearing fruit. Many thanks to our architect Mehran Farahmandpour, Housh Construction, and all our committee volunteers!

Update Your Membership Info Today!
Be sure to visit our new online membership management system, hosted by ShulCloud. All members should have received an email that includes a link to your account and instructions to get you started. If you haven’t received this email, contact Lise Schleicher and the SH Tech Team at info@shir-hadash.org

We encourage you to renew your membership on ShulCloud right away. The High Holidays are the week after Labor Day this year and membership renewal is DUE August 1. Anyone who has NOT completed their membership renewal paperwork, including making payment arrangements, by the High Holidays will be asked to do so before being allowed to enter the sanctuary.

Pick Your Week to Host an Oneg
This year we are asking each of our families to be Oneg & Service Host for just one service a year.  This does NOT mean providing all the refreshments for the oneg --  just setting up, cleaning up, and greeting our guests. While you’re exploring the new Membership Management System on Shul Cloud, you will find more information and a form to choose a date and sign up on the home page.  We are hoping for 100% participation with families sharing dates to make it even easier. Sign up today to pick the best date for your family!

High Holidays – Torah Portions Available
Hard to believe, but the High Holidays will be here before we know it - less than three months away.  So it's time for us to ramp up our planning , and one very important element is to assign Torah portions for reading or chanting.  We already have some parts assigned to folks who have done Torah before, but there are still parts available.  We have a particular need for readers or chanters on Rosh Hashanah Day 2 and Yom Kippur afternoon, but we do have a few slots still available on Rosh Hashanah Day 1 and Yom Kippur morning.  We are especially interested in having recent bar and bat mitzvahs come up and chant Torah.  If you volunteer, we will e-mail to you an MP3 of the Rabbi chanting the portion, plus a written copy of the portion in Hebrew and English. You also can get help from the Rabbi and Dawn in getting ready to chant.  So if you (or your son or daughter) are interested, please let Fred Andes know.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Fred, at fandes@btlaw.com or 773 354 3100.  Thanks - we look forward to seeing you all at High Holidays - and before!

“Tzelofehad’s Daughters: Leaders of Israel”

Dear Friends,

I love our bat mitzvah services at Shir Hadash.  While so much of the world is still grappling with the idea of women serving as leaders, the liberal Jewish world has moved way beyond all that.  Girls are learning the same as boys.  Young women are taking on leadership responsibilities along with young men.  Synagogue and Jewish community leaders include women in equal and sometimes greater numbers.

Some say that Mordecai Kaplan started all of this when he invented the bat mitzvah for his daughter Judith back in 1922.  It was radical and scandalous then - and normative now.  Like every visionary, Kaplan was ahead of his time.  Others say it all began with Miriam’s presence as a leader of the Exodus.

This week’s Torah portion tells of other women leaders involved in a situation during the desert wandering that should have solved the whole issue of women’s leadership long ago. …
