Membership and Upcoming Events

Building Update
Check out the banners announcing our arrival on Dundee Road! Permanent signage is on the way. We're making great progress inside and out as we get ready for our official dedication on August 18. Many thanks to our architect Mehran Farahmandpour, Housh Construction, and all our committee volunteers!

Update Your Membership Info Today!
Be sure to visit our new online membership management system, hosted by ShulCloud.  We encourage you to renew your membership online ASAP so that you will be all set for the High Holidays! All members should have received an email that includes a link to your account and instructions to get you started. If you haven’t received this email, contact Lise Schleicher and the SH Tech Team at info@shir-hadash.org

Tell Your Friends – High Holidays “180 for $18” Tickets
In 2013, Shir Hadash is offering a special promotion: “180 for $18.” Guests can purchase High Holiday tickets at the reduced rate of $18 per ticket. We hope this will inspire new families to get to know us and become members of our community. Some restrictions apply:
  • There are only 180 tickets available for purchase at the price of $18 per ticket.
  • The offer cannot be redeemed by current or past members, those who have purchased High Holiday tickets in the last five years, or those who participated in last year’s complimentary ticket program.
  • All registrations must be received by August 20.
Click here to visit our website for more information and online registration.

Pick Your Week to Host an Oneg
This year we are asking each of our families to be Oneg & Service Host for just one service a year.  This does NOT mean providing all the refreshments for the oneg --  just setting up, cleaning up, and greeting our guests.  Multiple families can/should host the same week. While you’re exploring the new Membership Management System on Shul Cloud, you will find more information and a form to choose a date and sign up on the home page.  Sign up today to pick the best date for your family!

July Dining for Dollars – Sweet Tomatoes Fundraiser on July 10
On July 10 we will be having our monthly restaurant fundraiser at Sweet Tomatoes at 2351 Willow Rd. in Glenview.  Click here to print our flyer and bring it in for lunch or dinner. When you buy a meal and a drink, 15% of the bill will be donated to Shir Hadash.

Permanent Fundraiser at The Continental Restaurant
Have you been to The Continental Restaurant yet? This family eatery  in Buffalo Grove is participating with Shir Hadash in a PERMANENT fundraiser.  They will donate 5% of any bill from Shir Hadash members any day of the week and no flyer is necessary! The Continental Restaurant is located at 788 S Buffalo Grove, next to the Dominick’s.

Musicians Wanted!
We have two great opportunities for musicians to get involved!
  • The Mighty Shir Hadash Klezmorim will be playing a hora set at the synagogue dedication on August 18 (see below). If you’re interested in playing along, rehearsals will be in late July and early August. Contact Abby Edler at edlerfamily@att.net for more info.
  • Musical rehearsals for High Holidays instrumentalists and singers will begin in mid-July. Adults and post b'nai mitzvah students are welcome.  Contact Sandy Weiss at sandy2weiss@gmail.com.

Golf Outing Success!
We had six folks come out on June 29 for a windy but beautiful day for golf at Sportsman’s Country Club in Northbrook.  We are thinking about another golf outing for later in the summer --watch the newsletter and your email for details!

Book Club, July 11
The next book club will meet on Thursday, July 11 at the home of the Zwick family, 385 Castlewood Lane in Deerfield. The book will be The Lemon Tree by Sandy Tolan. For more info about our book club, contact Meryl Abensohn at abenkras@aol.com.

Ravinia Outing, July 27
Mark your calendar for a Shir Hadash evening at Ravinia on July 27. The CSO will be performing with pianist Lang Lang. Watch for details in next week’s newsletter.

Synagogue Dedication, August 18
Be sure to save the date for the dedication of our beautiful synagogue on Sunday, August 18! We will be marching the Torahs into the new ark – you don’t want to miss this landmark day. Details still to come. If you have any questions and/or would like to help, contact Melanie Andes (fmandes@comcast.net) or Marc Fargotstein (marcfargo@att.net).

Creative Worship & Ritual

This Week: Hot Tub, Havdalah and S’mores, Oh My!
Saturday, July 6, 7:30pm
Due to the July 4 weekend, we have no Shabbat service this Friday, July 5.  However, we do have a service and great event on Saturday!  Join the Shir Hadash community at 7:30 pm on Saturday, July 6, for a cozy havdalah service in the home and garden of members Sandi & Lise Schleicher.  After a short havdalah service, we’ll enjoy a campfire (marshmallow roasting!) and a soak in the jacuzzi for all. Please bring a dessert to share for our potluck oneg and don't forget your swimsuit and a towel! Address available upon request – email cwr@shir-hadash.org for info, or check the directory in the members only section of the website.

Upcoming: Monday, July 15 - 7:30 at Synagogue
Tisha B'Av Service – Details to come

High Holidays – Torah Portions Available
The High Holidays will be here before we know it. We welcome you to sign up to read or chant Torah for our services. We have a particular need for readers or chanters on Rosh Hashanah Day 2 and Yom Kippur afternoon, but we do have a few slots still available on Rosh Hashanah Day 1 and Yom Kippur morning.  We are especially interested in having recent bar and bat mitzvahs come up and chant Torah.  We will e-mail to you an MP3 of the Rabbi chanting the portion, plus a written copy of the portion in Hebrew and English. You also can get help from the Rabbi and Dawn in getting ready to chant. If you (or your son or daughter) are interested, please contact Fred Andes at fandes@btlaw.com or 773 354 3100.

Adult Education

“Shehecheyanu Moments”

Dear Friends,

The remodeling of our new home – our Shir Hadash building – is coming along great.  Things are nearing completion and I can see what a wonderful home it will be for us.  As we prepare to dedicate our building in August and start this new chapter in our congregation’s life, it give me an opportunity to pause and look back on the journey that has brought us to this time.  Helping me out was the chance to clean out a few file folders in the office in preparation for our move.  These folders were ‘time capsules’ containing lots of photos, newspaper ads and articles, documents, various pages, and brochures from the past eighteen years. In my hand were whispers of the many services, bar and bat mitzvah celebrations, religious school classes, pot luck dinners, youth retreats, adult education classes, concerts, High Holidays, and festivals that we have shared together over the years.

After reviewing it all, I found myself nodding and saying a quiet  ‘Shehecheyanu’ in thanksgiving for the journey that has brought us to this point and for all the great opportunities and challenges that the future will bring.

In this week’s Torah portion, Moses stands before the Children of Israel and recounts all the places that the Children of Israel have camped on their 40 year journey from Egypt to the Promised Land….
