Membership and Upcoming Events

Book Club – Tonight!
Book Club will meet at 7:30 tonight, December 5 at the home of Rebecca Rice, 3641 Bernay Drive in Northbrook. We will be discussing The Slave by Isaac Bashevis Singer , the story of a Jewish scholar  sold into slavery in 17th century Poland who falls in love with his gentile master's daughter.  Join us today whether you have read the book or not: we will be discussing Jewish history in Poland, the false messiah, and Singer himself, the Yiddish author who won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Please RSVP to Meryl Abensohn at abenkras@aol.com.

Family Bowling Night with Men of Shir Hadash—this Sunday!
MOSH would like to welcome everyone to our kickoff event this Sunday, December 8. We will have a bowling party at The Alley, 210 Green Bay Road in Highwood from 7pm - 9pm. $18 per person gets you unlimited bowling and shoes. There will also be live music and plenty of TV's showing the games. The Alley features a full restaurant and bar for anyone interested. This event is open to all, not just the boys! We hope you and your family can join us for this community building event. Please RSVP to mosh@shir-hadash.org.

"Out of Chaos": Special Presentation by Holocaust Survivors, December 15
Featuring our own Lillian Zoloto
Shir Hadash's beloved Administrator, Lillian Zoloto, recently shared her experiences as a child of the Holocaust in an anthology entitled Out of Chaos, now available from the Northwestern University Press. On December 15, we will welcome Lillian and three of her fellow contributors, Aaron Elster, Ida Pulach, and Marguerite Mishkin, who will join us for readings and discussions of their personal stories of surviving World War II -- two from Poland, two from Belgium. After our guests share their stories, there will be the opportunity for questions from the audience.

Please join us on Sunday, December 15 from 10:30am to 12:00pm. This very special event is open to members, visitors, parents, and students of our 6th and 7th grade classes. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, please contact Emily Ascher, eddirector@shir-hadash.org.

New Event: Coffee House Night – Open Mic Style
We’re excited to announce the launch of “Coffee House Night at Shir Hadash – Open Mic Style”. This fun family event is planned for late January/early February. Picture a laid back Saturday night with low lighting, comfortable seating, friendly conversation, a Bake Sale with Coffee/Beverages, and the amazing talent of our friends.  EVERYONE will be welcome to participate: any age, any talent, members, non-members, friends and people who are just there to enjoy a wonderful evening of entertainment.

To get this event off the ground we still need a little help -- you!  The event is practically all organized, but we still need a little help… from YOU! Your baking.  Your tech skills.  Your set-up help.  Your talent! There’s room for everyone and we’d love to get you involved.  To get a sense of who might be interested in participating, please contact Margie Skora at MargiePromoPro1@aol.com and put “Coffee House Talent” in the subject line. Watch for more details coming soon!

The Continental Restaurant in Buffalo Grove or Butterfield's Restaurant in Northbrook permanently will donate 5% of your total bill to Shir Hadash! No flyer needed – just mention Shir Hadash when you are paying or fill out the Shir Hadash book behind the desk.  A great way to start or end Religious school!

“Optimists All”

Dear Friends,

I am an optimist.  For me, every cloud does have a silver lining.  Every situation, no matter how bad or difficult, has some blessing of meaning that can come forth.  Every challenge can leave us wiser and stronger.  Perhaps that’s why my middle name is Joseph. For what I share with the Biblical Joseph is our optimism.

Here is a young man, Joseph, whose brothers sold him into slavery.  As a servant in a nobleman’s home he was accused of a crime that he did not commit and thrown into jail.  After finally being released, he met the Pharaoh, interpreted his dreams, and was elevated to the position of Minister of Agriculture over all of Egypt.  He stored up lots of grain so that there is plenty of food during the seven predicted years of drought.  When his brothers came to Egypt to purchase food, Joseph kept his true identity a secret to test whether his brothers had repented for their evil deed against him so long ago. Joseph finally removed his Egyptian head covering and revealed himself to his stunned brothers with the words, “I am Joseph.  Does our father still live?”   Moreover, he did not take revenge.  Instead he told them that everything was meant to be. He explained that all the years of degradation and torment happened just so that he could be in a position to provide food and protection for his family.  There’s an optimist for you! …
