"Rolls and Rolls" of Gratitude
for the Shir Hadash Gift Wrapping Team!
The holidays
were made a little brighter, and the synagogue coffers were made a little
fuller, thanks to the time and talents of the Shir Hadash Gift Wrapping Team
who worked their magic at Barnes & Noble in Lincolnshire on November 29th,
December 8th and 15th! The wrappers had
fun working together, while raising money and talking to holiday shoppers who
were interested in learning more about Shir Hadash. Many thanks to members Michelle Fischer-Rohde,
Mia Graff, Mickey Laskin, Jennifer Lenhart, Carly Matt, Carrie Matt, Ruth
Sanders, Marilynn Singer, Lisa Whitefield, Mira Zweiban and Katy Zwick; and to
Stevenson High Students Eden Heumann, Sarah Horwich, Fiona Iriarte, Avery
Klondar, Aarthi Prakash, Sushmetha Subramanian, and Nicole Zukowski for
rounding out the team and filling in the schedule. And everyone knows that a nicely wrapped
package is nothing without the perfect bow!
Tremendous thanks to Lise Schleicher for providing a gorgeous selection
of bows - our gift-wrap patrons loved them!!
We'll be
back next year gift wrapping in multiple locations, so plan on joining us! You'll have fun and help raise money for Shir
Hadash at the same time!!
December: The Best Time to Donate!
The end of
the calendar year is approaching and now is the perfect time, if you are able,
to give a little extra help to make ends meet at Shir Hadash. We have many members of our community who are
struggling financially and who are unable to pay regular dues levels. The synagogue could use a little extra end of
year support from our Shir Hadash family.
And, if you can make a donation before the end of the year, you can even
use it as a charitable donation for your 2013 taxes.
Please
consider giving a little something extra right now to support our wonderful
community, rabbi, staff, programs, and building. There is a reason that each of you identifies
with Shir Hadash, please help show your support financially. You can easily
donate online through Paypal in Shul Cloud by clicking here -- but a check sent into the office is
just as welcome. Thank you all for helping to build and maintain our wonderful
community!
Save the Date: Shir Hadash Gala and Silent
Auction, February 22
We will be
having a Fundraising Gala night on February 22 at the Arboretum Club in Buffalo
Grove. It will be a night of great live
music, plenty of hors d’oeuvres and dessert, and a silent auction and raffle. Please mark the event on your calender and
even bring some friends. Invitations
will be going out in January.
Support Our Gala with Silent Auction
Donations or Sponsorships
We need your
help with silent auction items or becoming a Gala Sponsor. If you have a quality items to donate, have a
business with goods or services, or would be willing to purchase a gift card we
could include in the silent auction, please make a tax deductible donation to
our silent auction. Sponsorship
opportunities (which include a number of tickets) are also available.
All members
can help with the silent auction. Even
if you don't have an item to donate or a service to provide, it would be a
great help if we can get members to ask the businesses they already patronize
to donate an item. Contract Glenn Graff
at Fundraising@shir-hadash.org for information on how to ask your local
businesses to donate or how to arrange your own silent auction donation. Every little bit helps. All proceeds go to Shir Hadash.
Book Club
Our next
selection will be Second Person Singular by Sayed Kashua. The book is a
mystery that explores the identity of Arabs who are assimilated in Israeli
culture. We will discuss this novel at our February meeting; watch future
newsletters for date and location info.
Hungry Before or After Religious School (or
Anytime)?
The
Continental Restaurant in Buffalo Grove or Butterfields Restaurant in
Northbrook permanently will donate 5% of your total bill to Shir Hadash! No
flyer needed – just mention Shir Hadash when you are paying or fill out the
Shir Hadash book behind the desk.
Creative Worship and Ritual
Evening Service for Shabbat Shemot,
December 20
“Am I My
Brother’s Keeper?” This theme inspires our service on Friday evening at 7:30. While
this question was first asked by Cain regarding his brother Abel, it would be
asked by each Israelite as the Exodus from Egypt approached. It is a question that we still ask today and
Judaism has a lot to say. As individuals
within our community, what are our responsibilities to each other? Come learn some
sacred Jewish texts from throughout our Jewish history and join a spirited
discussion about what it really means for a Jew to be a responsible adult.
Volunteer Opportunities
Help Needed with SH Marketing
The
Marketing Committee needs help letting the public know what’s going on at Shir
Hadash! Can you help out in one of these roles?
- Flyer Designer (Time commitment is about 2 hours per month)
- Public Relations Coordinator (about 2 hours per month)
- Press Release Writer (about 3 hours per press release)
If you are
interested in any of these volunteer opportunities, please contact Rachel
Schick Siegel, Marketing Committee Chair (847) 724-5720, rschicksiegel@comcast.net for details. Thank you!

students interested in participating in our newly re-organizing youth ensembles
- the Kolit youth choir, and student instrumentalists of all kinds who might be
interested in playing in a small youth ensemble, or playing along with Kolit.

instrumentalists of all kinds are welcome. For more information contact Mr. D
at music.director@shir-hadash.org.
On Friday,

Sea" that the Israelites sang after crossing the Reed Sea. Join us at the
special service at 7:30pm with a focus on music and song, including music sung
by the Shir Hadash Lahaka adult choir.
On Purim -- To Entertain Or To Be Entertained, That is the Question
Purim is
coming sooner than you think. It starts Saturday night, March 15, 2014, to be
exact. Plans are underway for this year's Purim festivities. If you like to
sing, act, write parody, or enjoy making other people laugh, come join our crew
of merrymakers for this year's Purim shpiel. We need not only performers, but
instrumentalists, and help with costumes, scenery, etc. Sometimes, being part
of the Purim shpiel is more fun than watching it! Why not give it a try? If
you're interested, contact Adrian Durlester or Rabbi Eitan..

Shemot
Torah -
Exodus 1:1-6:1 / Haftarah - Isaiah 27:6-28:13; 29:22-23
“Each of Us Has a Name”
Dear
Friends,
What did it
take for the People of Israel to become a people? Well, the answer is simple. It took people – individual members of the
tribes of Israel who would come together to forge an identity and work together
to become a united people! As the book of
Exodus opens, many think that the Torah immediately focuses on the lives of
Moses, Miriam, and Aaron – three great leaders and luminaries of our
people. But that’s not what we read
first. Instead, we read a list of names
of Jacob’s children and a reference to all the unknown members of their
families, seventy in all (the Hebrew title for the book of Exodus or Shemot
really means – ‘Names’). “These are the names of the sons of Israel, who came
to Egypt with Jacob, each coming with his household…”
There is an
important reason why Exodus opens with a list of names and a mention of the
unnamed rather than the story of Moses.
The Torah wants us to know that there is a lot more to our people than
the celebrities and their well-known stories….
