collection of membership dues is vital to the daily operation of the shul.
Please note that members must be up-to-date in their accounts to be admitted to
High Holidays services. If you have missed the deadline, please follow the

Book Club
Our next
book will be My Promised Land: The
Triumph and Tragedy of Israel by Ari Shavit. We will meet at the home of
the Kopulsky family, 2460 Asbury Road in Northbrook, on October 22 at 7:30. All

Scholarship Fund
We are
grateful to everyone who has contributed to the Samuel I. Andes Scholarship
Fund, a need-based fund for children whose families cannot afford to pay for
their Jewish education at Shir Hadash. Melanie and Fred Andes have created this
fund in memory of Fred’s great-uncle Samuel I. Andes and have graciously

New! Selichot Service and Film Presentation,
September 20, 7:30pm
Join us for
an evening of reflection, study, and friends. Selichot is a brief Saturday
evening service that prepares us for the work of the High Holidays. Its readings and melodies are meditative,
reflective and stirring. Selichot is
study. Our study program will be
"Strangers No More: Seeking Tolerance, Coexistence, & Peace,”
including the Oscar-winning 2010 documentary Strangers No More. Selichot is about camaraderie. Bring a special treat to share in our dessert
refreshment buffet.

In the heart
of Tel Aviv, there is an exceptional school where children from forty-eight
different countries and diverse backgrounds come together to learn. Many of the
students arrive at Bialik-Rogozin School fleeing poverty, political adversity
and even genocide. Here, no child is a stranger.
Strangers No More follows several
students’ struggle to acclimate to life in a new land while slowly opening up
to share their stories of hardship and tragedy. With tremendous effort and
dedication, the school provides the support these children need to recover from
their past. Together, the bond between teacher and student, and amongst the
students themselves, enables them to create new lives in this exceptional
community.
High Holidays Registration
High
Holidays are coming soon - Selichot, which starts the holiday season, is on
Saturday, September 20. It's time to
register! This year, we are doing that
on-line, using the ShulCloud system
Members:
Please keep in mind, although you do not have pay for tickets to High Holidays
services, you do need to go through the online service registration. This
allows us to plan for seating, food, and other contingencies. Also, note that
members must up-to-date in their annual dues payments in order to be admitted
to services.
All
questions regarding services, registration, etc. should be directed to
cwr@shir-hadash.org. We look forward to see you all on the High Holidays!
Children’s Programs for High Holidays
Just a
reminder: if you plan to have your children participate in our excellent
special programs during Rosh Hashanah morning and Yom Kippur morning services,
please be sure to sign them up via our website. This allows us to plan for
materials, seating, and other logistics. Thanks for your response!

Holiday Memberships! This new concept covers everything we do at Shir Hadash
between Slichot and Simchat Torah/Shmini Atzeret, including of course Rosh

on the fence about us to try us out! Come to Lunch and Learn on Thursdays with
the Rabbi, try out an adult ed class on Sunday mornings, Try out a Saturday
morning Shabbat and see our one of a kind B'nai Mitzvah's.

who has never been with us for High Holidays, there are 108 memberships
available for $54 each. For those guests who have been with us before, a High

The High
Holidays are just around the corner, and we’re looking for volunteers to help
our observance a pleasure for everyone. With a minimal time commitment, you can
help make our services welcoming and accommodating. New members are especially
welcome – this is a great opportunity to make new friends in the community!

High Holiday Food Baskets
Once again
this year, Shir Hadash will be joining with Maot Chitim of Greater Chicagoland
to help deliver High Holiday food boxes for needy Jewish families all over the
Chicago area.
We still
need several volunteers to help deliver food boxes on Sunday September 21, from
9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Buffalo Grove/Wheeling area. We will be delivering 105 food boxes, which
will be in large boxes weighing approximately 20 lbs. each. We deliver to several large complexes and use
a rental truck to transport the boxes.
If you are
interested in helping deliver boxes, please contact Mark Lenhart,
mjlenhart@comcast.net, as soon as possible. Mark will be able to provide
volunteers with more details. Thanks for participating!

“Abundance”
Dear
Friends,
Last Sunday
was the opening day of our Shir Hadash Religious School. What a wonderful day it was. The weather was perfect and spirits were
high. The classrooms looked great, the
teachers were enthusiastic, and the children were so excited to see their
friends from last year and welcome the new students to their classes. The parents were excited, too. Many joined the opening assembly and our 4th
through 7th grade learner’s service.
Lots of adult members joined the adult education classes and a few even
participated in my Shofar Blowing Workshop.
Looking out
on the assembly and visiting classrooms throughout the day, I thought of this
week’s Torah portion and Moses’ words to the Israelites as they prepared to
enter the Promised Land. Moses
instructed them to open their eyes and always be aware of the blessing and
abundance showered upon them. He told
them to bring the first fruits of the spring harvest before God and recite
words of thanksgiving for the journey that brought them to the Land of Israel,
for the wonder of the fields, the health of the flocks, the splendor of the
vineyards, and the grandeur of the orchards.
That is
indeed the Jewish way. At each and every
moment, we must be aware of the greatness all around us. And so it is with Shir Hadash, especially on
our opening day of Religious School….

Havayah!
Our monthly teen
Sunday School class (for those who have completed their Bar or Bat Mitzvah) had
its first meeting of the year last week, sharing a casual lunch with the Rabbi.
Future gatherings at the synagogue will include lots of discussions about
important topics of Jewish life and thought.
In addition, there may be some field trips to places such as a kosher
restaurant, a shabbat dinner at one of our homes, and perhaps an evening at the
Chicago Festival of Israeli Cinema to watch a movie. It’s not too late to join!
Come to our next meeting on October 12, from 12:30 to 2:00pm.
Teen News
Teen Services for High Holidays
This year,
we will devote some time during the High Holidays for teens to celebrate
together. All 6th through 12th graders are invited to
participate. We will
focus on key themes of the High Holidays in ways that are uniquely meaningful
and relevant to young adults.
- Rosh Hashanah Day 1 (September 25) – Teens meet from approximately 9:45am (after the Rabbi’s Drash in the main service) to 10:45, returning in time for the Torah service.
- Yom Kippur (October 4) – Teens meet from 9:45 to 11:00am.

loads of activities coming up in the next few weeks! Contact Carole at youth@shir-hadash.org for more information.
- September 13 – Teen Havdalah and Movie Night, 7:00pm. Join us for a brief Havdalah service, and then watch Ferris Bueller's Day Off, munch on popcorn, and hang out with your friends. Admission is at least one canned good per person to support local food pantries. Bring your friends!
- September 22 – Ra’am Business Meeting at 6:30pm, followed by Monday Night Football. We will be picking our Stand UP cause, so you'll want to be there to have your voice heard. After the business we will hang out with a potluck to watch Monday Night Football. This meeting will be at the Mostows’ home in Deerfield; contact Carole at the email above for more information.
- September 25 – Rosh Hashanah Teen Service for 6th through 12th grade, during High Holidays Services (See above)

a new day and location: We now meet at noon on Tuesdays in the conference room.

Sunday Morning Adult Ed
Our kids are
back in school, and our adult ed programs are getting a fresh start too! Our
Torah Study & Jewish Philosophy class, led by Fred Andes, takes place on
Sunday mornings. Meet at the synagogue from 9:45 to 10:45 for coffee and
engaging discussion topics. All are welcome.Donations
