New! Shir
Hadash Book of Life
We are proud
to continue our Book of Life program, which follows the hallowed Jewish
tradition of honoring the memory of our loved ones during Yizkor. The Book of Life will ensure that on the
holiest of days, Yom Kippur, we remember and inscribe the names of those that
have passed on. Please click here to submit the names you would like included in the Shir Hadash Book of Life. In order to ensure that we can include
your names in the printed Books, please fill out the form (including payment
information) by no later than Sunday,
September 28. No requests can be
accepted after that date, due to the printing deadlines. If you have any questions, please send a note
to cwr@shir-hadash.org .

us know by emailing nflsunday1966@gmail.com.
Please put Bagels in the subject line.

This Week’s Services
Friday Night Shabbat Service, September 19,
7:30pm
We will be
using this Friday night as our "entryway" to the High Holidays. Throughout the service, we will discuss key
ideas that will be part of the High Holiday services. Rabbi Eitan will take your questions about
the Holidays. Ever wonder what Tashlikh
or Kol Nidre are really all about? Come and learn! Please remember to bring a
treat to share afterward at our community oneg.
Selichot Service and Film Presentation,
September 20, 7:30pm
Join us for
an evening of reflection, study, and friends. Selichot is a brief Saturday
evening service that prepares us for the work of the High Holidays. Its readings and melodies are meditative, reflective
and stirring. Selichot is study. Our study program will be "Strangers No
More: Seeking Tolerance, Coexistence, & Peace,” including the Oscar-winning
2010 documentary Strangers No More.
Selichot is about camaraderie. Bring a
special treat to share in our dessert refreshment buffet.
In the heart
of Tel Aviv, there is an exceptional school where children from forty-eight different
countries and diverse backgrounds come together to learn. Many of the students
arrive at Bialik-Rogozin School fleeing poverty, political adversity and even
genocide. Here, no child is a stranger. Strangers No More follows several
students’ struggle to acclimate to life in a new land while slowly opening up
to share their stories of hardship and tragedy. With tremendous effort and
dedication, the school provides the support these children need to recover from
their past. Together, the bond between teacher and student, and amongst the
students themselves, enables them to create new lives in this exceptional
community.

High Holidays Registration
Haven't registered for High Holidays services yet? They begin this Saturday with Selichot! This year, we are managing registration online, using the ShulCloud system
Members:
Please keep in mind, although you do not have pay for tickets to High Holidays
services, you do need to go through the online service registration. This
allows us to plan for seating, food, and other contingencies. Also, note that
members must up-to-date in their annual dues payments in order to be admitted
to services.
All
questions regarding services, registration, etc. should be directed to
cwr@shir-hadash.org. We look forward to see you all on the High Holidays!
Children’s Programs for High Holidays
Just a
reminder: if you plan to have your children participate in our excellent
special programs during Rosh Hashanah morning and Yom Kippur morning services,
please be sure to sign them up via our website. This allows us to plan for
materials, seating, and other logistics. Thanks for your response!
Special Offer for New High Holidays Guests
– “High Holiday Memberships”
We are not
selling tickets for High Holiday services this year -- we are offering High
Holiday Memberships! This new concept covers everything we do at Shir Hadash
between Slichot and Simchat Torah/Shmini Atzeret, including of course Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This is a perfect time for your friends that have been
on the fence about us to try us out! Come to Lunch and Learn on Tuesdays with
the Rabbi, try out an adult ed class on Sunday mornings, participate in a Saturday
morning Shabbat and see our wonderful B'nai Mitzvahs.
For anyone
who has never been with us for High Holidays, there are 108 memberships
available for $54 each. For those guests who have been with us before, a High
Holiday Membership is the same as the ticket-only price of $250. Click here for details, or tell your friends to
visit our website to register. Shir Hadash:
Not what you expect, but what you've been looking for.
Volunteer Opportunities
New! Pre-Holiday
Office Help Needed
Our Shir Hadash
office is a very busy place as the staff prepares for the High Holidays. Lillian is looking for help each day until
Rosh Hashanah. Can you spare a few hours
(or more) over the next few weeks?
Please contact Suzanne Wexler at volunteer@shir-hadash.org and let her
know when you’re available to help out.
Volunteers Needed for High Holidays –
Ushers, Oneg, and Children’s Programs
The High
Holidays are just around the corner, and we’re looking for volunteers to help make
our observance a pleasure for everyone. With a minimal time commitment, you can
help make our services welcoming and accommodating. New members are especially
welcome – this is a great opportunity to make new friends in the community!
Volunteers
are needed in the following roles:
- Ushers for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur: Contact Ken Laner, klaner@6ideas.com
- Oneg Organizers for Rosh Hashanah: Contact Mia Graff, graffme379@yahoo.com
- Adult Assistants for Children’s Programs: Contact Suzanne Wexler, volunteer@shir-hadash.org
There’s no
need to set a time commitment now – just email Ken, Mia, or Suzanne to let them
know you’re interested or to ask questions. Thanks for your participation!
High Holiday Food Baskets
Once again
this year, Shir Hadash will be joining with Maot Chitim of Greater Chicagoland
to help deliver High Holiday food boxes for needy Jewish families all over the
Chicago area.
We still
need several volunteers to help deliver food boxes on This Sunday, September
21, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Buffalo Grove/Wheeling area. We will be delivering 105 food boxes, which
will be in large boxes weighing approximately 20 lbs. each. We deliver to several large complexes and use
a rental truck to transport the boxes.
If you are
interested in helping deliver boxes, please contact Mark Lenhart, mjlenhart@comcast.net, as soon as possible. Mark will be able to provide
volunteers with more details. Thanks for participating!

“Strangers
No More”
Dear
Friends,
When times
get anxious and uncertain, many feel left out and alone. Many do not know where to turn for help and
support. Many feel forgotten. Yet our Torah tradition teaches that all Jews
are part of the Jewish people, regardless of life situation. All belong.
All have a place in the Jewish family. No one is a stranger.
In this
week’s Torah portion, Moses called all the Children of Israel to stand as one
people and enter into the Covenant that joins Israel with God. This was a key moment in the formation of our
people’s identity and mission. We are a people that builds community and heals
the world. Moses called all Israelites, including leaders, elders, officers, all
men, all women, all children, even those with menial jobs, such as wood cutters
and water carriers. He called all non-Israelites travelling along, too.
Everyone was part of the community including all in need and all who could help
others. This passage is so important, that it has become our Torah reading for
the morning of Yom Kippur.
Community
building and tikkun olam, healing the world, stand at the heart of Shir
Hadash. Helping ourselves and helping
others is what we do….
Education
Religious School
Shir
Hadash’s wonderful religious school is off to a great start for the new year! Click here for detailed school information in Education Director Emily Ascher’s blog.
Havayah!
Our monthly
teen Sunday School class (for those who have completed their Bar or Bat
Mitzvah) had its first meeting of the year last week, sharing a casual lunch
with the Rabbi. Future gatherings at the synagogue will include lots of
discussions about important topics of Jewish life and thought. In addition, there may be some field trips to
places such as a kosher restaurant, a shabbat dinner at one of our homes, and
perhaps an evening at the Chicago Festival of Israeli Cinema to watch a movie.
It’s not too late to join! Come to our next meeting on October 12, from 12:30
to 2:00pm.
