CREATIVE WORSHIP AND RITUAL
Family Shabbat, Friday, November 6, 5:45pm
Families with young kids are invited to a very special Pajama
Shabbat this week! We’ll be making cookies, starting at 5:45pm. (Please note
that, unlike some of our family Shabbat events, there’s no dinner at Shir
Hadash this week.) While the cookies cool, we’ll enjoy a fun service with Rabbi
Eitan and Rabbi Seeg. Then it’ll be time to feast on our cookies and milk and
listen to stories before heading home to bed. Kids, be sure to wear your
favorite PJs! Kitah Aleph and Kitah Bet students (Grades K-2) will be our special guests.
Shabbat Evening Service, Friday, November 6, 7:30pm
Our Shabbat evening service, for all ages, starts at 7:30. Our
Kitah Zion 7th graders will help Rabbi Eitan lead the service. And, we
will celebrate an auf ruf! For those who haven't experienced that before,
it's a pre-wedding celebration. So we will join Alexa Rosenberg and Jason
Berg - and Alexa's parents, members Jay and Bari Rosenbloom - to enjoy the very
special auf ruf ceremony in honor of their upcoming marriage. There will
a very special oneg afterwards, courtesy of the Rosenblooms. So come and
celebrate!

Shabbat Chayei Sarah
Torah Portion: Genesis 23:1-25:18 / Haftarah Portion: I Kings 1:1-31
“Yitzchak Rabin: A Lasting Legacy”
Dear Friends,
On November 5, 1995, following a peace rally in the square
of Tel Aviv that would later bear his name, then Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin
was assassinated by 25-year old law student Yigal Amir. His murder, followed by
a series of devastating suicide bombings several years later, seemingly halted
the progress toward a permanent peace agreement that Rabin began. While today
the vision of peace in Israel seems farther away than ever, Rabin’s actions
before his death left a critical legacy.
Many commentaries note that while the name of this week’s
portion, “Chayei Sarah—the Life of Sarah,” seems to indicate that the portion
would contain details of the matriarch’s life, Sarah in fact makes only the
briefest of appearances, as she dies in the second verse. The rest of the
portion details her burial, the purchase of the Cave of Machpelah and the
subsequent search for a wife for Isaac. Why then is the portion named after
Sarah when she is barely mentioned? We find a possible answer in the quality of
the home that Rebecca builds together with Isaac. When Rebecca returns to
Canaan we read that, “Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent, and took
Rebecca, and she became his wife; and he loved her. And Isaac was comforted for
his mother.” (24:67) Rashi explains that, “she [Rebecca] became like Sarah, his
mother. For as long as Sarah lived, there was a light burning from one Sabbath
eve to the next, and there was a blessing on the dough, and there was a cloud
hanging over the tent, and when she died, these ceased. But when Rebecca
entered [the tent] they returned.” Rebecca continued the spiritual values and
legacy that Sarah initiated and inculcated in her son Isaac.
Describing the legacy of Yitzchak Rabin, Shimon Peres wrote,
“Rabin bequeathed to us a model of politics at its best. Politics whose essence
is serving the public, serving the state, service that will influence coming
generations. Rabin’s legacy to the state in those years was courage, respect,
and equality…Rabin the man will not return, but his legacy will stay with us as
long as there are citizens in the state of Israel who fight for it. The murder
took us back but it cannot stop the wheels of history.” Yitzchak Rabin
dedicated his life to the fight for a secure and safe state of Israel. But, he
also demonstrated willingness to take great risks and make difficult, painful
sacrifices to forge peace with Israel’s neighbors.
His legacy lives on today. While the goal peace might seem
far in the distance, Rabin’s leadership and legacy will live on long into the
future.
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Soup Kitchen Help Needed, November 15
On Sunday, November 15, Shir Hadash will be preparing, cooking, and serving over 90 meals for needy individuals at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church soup kitchen in Evanston. This event will require volunteers to be available from 1:30 to 4:30pm. We need a minimum of 25 volunteers (about 10-12 families). There is no age limit to volunteer, but from past experience kids should be at least six years old to participate.
Each family will be responsible for bringing an entrée that will feed 10 to 15 people; one gallon of milk; one large bag of frozen mixed vegetables; one large bag of fruit (oranges, bananas, apples, etc) and dessert.
If you are interested, please email Mark Lenhart at mjlenhart@comcast.net by November 1. More information will be sent to volunteers about one week before the event. Thanks for supporting this much needed and appreciated effort!
Help Needed for Interfaith Thanksgiving Event, November 22
Shir Hadash is playing a critical role in the upcoming
Northwest Suburban Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration at Stevenson High School
in Lincolnshire, on Sunday November 22nd from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Shir Hadash, along with Hope Lutheran Church,
will be sharing the "hospitality" responsibilities, setting up,
serving at an oneg and cleaning up for the estimated 1000-1100 people we expect
to attend. Rabbi Eitan will be
participating in the service as well.
How you can help:
- We need seven volunteers from 5:00-7:-00pm before the service on November 22 for set up, and seven volunteers from 7:30-9:30 for serving and clean-up.
- Food for the oneg: (bakery items, packages of cookies, donuts, coffee cake, etc.) to be dropped off at the synagogue the morning of November 22 before 2:00 pm or at the home of Marla Callistein, 1209 Hazel Ave. in Deerfield.
If you would like to sign up for any of these volunteer
opportunities, please click

EDUCATION ANNOUNCEMENTS
Kitah Aleph (K-1), Kitah Bet (2nd grade) and Kitah Zion (7th grade) Services on November 6
On Friday, November 6, Kitah Aleph and Kitah Bet students will be helping Rabbi Eitan and Rabbi Seeg to lead the Family Service at 6:15pm. And this is not just any service: it is Pajama Shabbat! Arrive about 5:45pm, with kids in their favorite pajamas, so that we can bake cookies. We will then enjoy a service with Rabbi Seeg, Kitah Aleph, Kitah Bet, and Rabbi Eitan. After our service, we will then get to enjoy our cookies with some milk (a must), and a story or two to complete the night. Stuffed animals, dolls or other sleep friends are of course invited as well.
Kitah Zion, we didn’t want you to feel left out! You get to help Rabbi Eitan lead the regular service that same night (Friday, November 6) at 7:30pm. And this is not just any service either: it is Shabbat Chayei Sara! This is the week we learn that the first time Rebecca saw Isaac (to whom she was sold/promised for marriage), she fell off of her camel. Ah, biblical love at first sight.
Parents, if you have any questions about either service, please contact Rabbi Seeg at learning@shir-hadash.org.
Learn About Camp JRF, November 15
On November 15, a representative from the camp will be at Shir Hadash to give a presentation about the camp for our students and then will hold a special meeting just for parents. The general presentation will be from 11:30-11:55 and then the parent meeting will be from Noon-12:30. This is a great chance to find out about a fantastic camp and to have answered any questions you may have. Please plan to come to hear about this awesome opportunity for our students.
New! Havayah Returns for High Schoolers, November 16
We are excited to announce the launch of a new year for our Havayah program for post-b'nai mitzvah students!
