New! Billy Kaplan and “Shabbat Sweet” Returns to Shir Hadash, November 20
Don’t miss our special musical Shabbat event on Friday, November 20 at 7:30pm. Billy Kaplan’s “Shabbat Sweet” is an original contemporary journey of music, reading, and prayer. Performers will include musicians and singers from both the Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation (JRC) and Shir Hadash. “Shabbat Sweet” is a Friday night service that blends ancient Jewish prayers with original melodies by JRC musician and youth leader Billy Kaplan. The lively, soulful melodies have a freshness that manages to seem familiar to many.

      Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration, November 22
The Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council, of which Shir Hadash is a member congregation, will present an engaging and welcoming Thanksgiving event. Join clergy from local houses of worship, including our own Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow, as they share music, thoughts, and prayers of thanksgiving, blessing, and peace. The celebration will be held at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, beginning at 7:00pm. Free admission; please bring a donation of non-perishable food or paper goods for local food banks.

New Member Dinner Brings Community Together

Thanks to everyone that attended the New Member dinner last weekend! It was a lot of fun and a great night for meeting new members and making new friends! Thanks also to everyone that helped with the set up and clean up! Your assistance was greatly appreciated.

New! Announcing the 1st Ever Shir Hadash Cookbook…and “Top Chef” Inspired Event!
We are going to publish the first ever Shir Hadash cookbook in Spring 2016, and we need your recipes! We want our cookbook to reflect our diverse membership, so please submit your family favorites, Sephardic specialties, gluten-free recipes, etc.

The cookbook will be professionally published and contain special pages of interest, a table of contents, an index, helpful cooking hints, and recipe category dividers. Please submit three to five of your favorite recipes. We will strive to include at least one of your recipes. Recipes are due by December 21, 2015. Visit our website at www.shir-hadash.org for details.

In conjunction with the cookbook publication, we will be holding a “Top Chef”-style event on Saturday, April 9, where congregants will prepare and bring their dishes, and attendees will taste each dish and select the winning dish in each category. Mark your calendar!

Plan Ahead for Hanukkah -- with SHOP Gift Cards
Hanukkah starts December 6! You know you’ll be giving out lots of gift cards in December – and when you buy them from SHOP, you help Shir Hadash without paying a penny more. Plan ahead and start SHOPping now! Scroll to the bottom of the newsletter for current SHOP special bonuses.

Hanukkah Candles Available at Shir Hadash
Our annual candle sale begins this week. They will be available at Friday night services and during Religious School. Get ready for the holiday and help Shir Hadash at the same time!

      Book Club
This Shir Hadash Book Club met on November 4 to discuss "All the Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doerr. 13 members and non-members discussed this amazing tale of France in WWII through the "eyes" of a blind girl and Germany as seen by an ingenious young radio technician. Besides an enlightening discussion of the book, we had a historical perspective offered by David Liebling on D-Day and the Battle of Normandy, which added to our understanding. Thank you Susan Grossman for your kind hospitality and for accommodating our last-minute location change.

Our next meeting will be in January to discuss "A Backpack, A Bear and Eight Crates of Vodka: A Memoir” by Lev Golinkin. This is the Spertus One Book/ One Community selection for 2015. The date and location is TBA. For more information, contact Meryl Abensohn at abenkras@aol.com.

      THE RABBI’S CORNER

      November 13-14, 2015 / 2 Kislev 5776
      Torah: Genesis 25:19 - 28:9 / Haftarah: Malachi 1:1 - 2:7

      “Sibling Rivalry”

      Dear Friends,
What is the source of sibling rivalry? This is the question that Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks explored when he spoke at the 92nd Street Y in New York on Sunday evening. As a sponsoring synagogue of the program, we at Shir Hadash had the great honor of watching a live simulcast of the event.

In this week’s Torah portion, Jacob and Esau are born and set out on a lifetime of sibling rivalry - from selling the birthright to stealing the blessing of the first-born and beyond. Rabbi Sacks asks, what is the source of sibling rivalry in this and so many other stories throughout the Hebrew Bible and sacred texts of other religions?

For Rabbi Sacks, the rivalry derives from our jealousy and envy of the other. When we need what the other brother has, in order to get it, we must strive with and overcome him. According to Sacks, the jealousy and envy makes sense only when what we want and need is in limited supply. Instead of sharing, the brothers fight in order to have it all. The rivalry grows beyond the Biblical stories and quickly becomes the engine of competition and often violence between the sibling religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. What the religions are fighting about is God’s love and attention.  Each religion needs to declare that it is the true religion and that God has chosen it and rejected the other. Yet, Sacks challenges us to ask whether God’s love is finite?  Is God’s love limited?  Of course, not. Thus, it makes no sense to fight each other in order to gain God’s attention and love.  God’s compassion and support is there for everyone.

So let’s start reading the texts differently. Instead of vying for God’s love, let us share and support each other. Let us see everyone as created in the image of God and bearing God’s blessing. Let us be a light of tolerance, understanding and wisdom. Let us grow from the sibling rivalry of the Bible and modern religions and emerge into a new age of sharing, cooperation, and love amongst all who live on earth.

      Shabbat shalom.
      Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

      VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Soup Kitchen Help Needed, November 15
On Sunday, November 15, Shir Hadash will be preparing, cooking, and serving over 90 meals for needy individuals at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church soup kitchen in Evanston. This event will require volunteers to be available from 1:30 to 4:30pm. We need a minimum of 25 volunteers (about 10-12 families). There is no age limit to volunteer, but from past experience kids should be at least six years old to participate.

Each family will be responsible for bringing an entrée that will feed 10 to 15 people; one gallon of milk; one large bag of frozen mixed vegetables; one large bag of fruit (oranges, bananas, apples, etc) and dessert.

If you are interested, please email Mark Lenhart at mjlenhart@comcast.net by November 1. More information will be sent to volunteers about one week before the event. Thanks for supporting this much needed and appreciated effort!

Help Needed for Interfaith Thanksgiving Event, November 22
Shir Hadash is playing a critical role in the upcoming Northwest Suburban Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, on Sunday November 22nd from 7:00-8:00 p.m.  Shir Hadash, along with Hope Lutheran Church, will be sharing the "hospitality" responsibilities, setting up, serving at an oneg and cleaning up for the estimated 1000-1100 people we expect to attend.  Rabbi Eitan will be participating in the service as well.

      How you can help:
      • We need seven volunteers from 5:00-7:-00pm before the service on November 22 for set up, and seven volunteers from 7:30-9:30 for serving and clean-up.
      • Food for the oneg: (bakery items, packages of cookies, donuts, coffee cake, etc.) to be dropped off at the synagogue the morning of November 22 before 2:00 pm or at the home of Marla Callistein, 1209 Hazel Ave. in Deerfield.
If you would like to sign up for any of these volunteer opportunities, please click here and add your name to the sign-up sheet.
