MEMBERSHIP AND UPCOMING EVENTS

Tonight! Shir Hadash Women’s Group Launches January 7
We are excited to announce the formation of "Women of Shir Hadash" (official group name in the works) which will have its first informal get-together in January. At this event, we will discuss our interests and focus on what this new group could be. It is not a committee! The groups can be social, spiritual, philanthropic – whatever its members would like to pursue.

The inaugural event will be held on Thursday, January 7 at 7:30pm at the home of Julie Wellisch, 14 Whitehall Court in Buffalo Grove. Refreshments will be served. We are looking forward to a fun and engaging evening with input from any adult women who would like to participate. For more information, contact Julie at juliewellisch@gmail.com.

Upcoming MOSH (Men Of Shir Hadash) Events
All Men Of Shir Hadash are welcome!  These are the events for 1st quarter 2016.  RSVP requests will be sent out a week before each event, but you can at least put these dates on your calendar today!
  • January 17, 1:00pm at Pinstripes in Northbrook:  We will be playing Bocce Ball and ordering food.
  • February 21, 3:00pm: Wolves Hockey Game at Allstate Arena.
  • March 5: Poker night at Glenn Graff’s house.  Time TBD.

If you have questions about MOSH, contact Dan Wellisch, danwellisch@gmail.com

Shir Hadash Cookbook -- Recipe Deadline Extended to January 15
We are going to publish the first ever Shir Hadash cookbook in Spring 2016, and we need your recipes! We want our cookbook to reflect our diverse membership, so please submit your family favorites, Sephardic specialties, gluten-free recipes, etc.

The cookbook will be professionally published and contain special pages of interest, a table of contents, an index, helpful cooking hints, and recipe category dividers. Please submit three to five of your favorite recipes. We will strive to include at least one of your recipes. We've extended our deadline to January 15. Visit our website  for details and submission forms.

Book Club, January 28
Our next meeting will be on January 28 at 7:30pm. Please note our location change: we'll meet at the home of Rebecca Rice,  3641 Bernay Drive in Northbrook, to discuss A Backpack, A Bear and Eight Crates of Vodka: A Memoir by Lev Golinkin. This book is the memoir of a 10 year old boy on his journey from the Ukraine to America in 1990, at the height of Soviet Anti-Semitism.  For more information, contact Meryl Abensohn at abenkras@aol.com.

New! Save the Date for New Coffee House Night - Concert Series, February 20 – Lil Rev is coming to Shir Hadash!
Thank you all for supporting the Coffee House Night. Your generous support of the Open Mic Program has inspired us to add a "Concert Series" featuring a single entertainer or group.

On Saturday, February 20, we are going kick off our inaugural Coffee House Night - Concert Series with the fabulous, award winning Jewish entertainer, Lil Rev, a talented multi-instrumentalist and storyteller. He's put together a special variety show filled with stories and songs for us. Click here for a video preview of Lil’s amazing performance style. More details will be coming in future newsletters. As always, this event is offered for a free-will donation.

Please save the date, Saturday, February 20, for an incredible evening of musical entertainment and camaraderie. If you are interested in helping make this evening a success, please contact Margie at MargiePromoPro1@aol.com.

CREATIVE WORSHIP AND RITUAL

Shabbat Services, Friday, January 8

  • Family Shabbat Featuring 3rd Graders, 5:30pm -- Join Rabbi Eitan, Rabbi Seeg, and our 3rd grade class for an upbeat and engaging family service.  Dubbed “Nachos and Naches” (a Yiddish word meaning “pride” or “joy”), this is another wonderful opportunity for families to come together for an evening of song, prayer, story, and tasty eats.  We begin at 5:30 with refreshments, followed by our service. These services are geared to families with kids in 3rd grade and below but are open to all.
  • Shabbat Service with Guest Speaker, 7:30pm -- “Let Us Light These Lights: Building Trust and Understanding” – This Friday, our Shabbat service explores religious discrimination in America.  We welcome guest speaker Father Corey Brost, President of St. Viator High School and Director of the Children of Abraham Coalition, which brings together youth of all religions for encounters that build trust, hope, and understanding. We will gain new insight on how to open our hearts, minds, and lives to the diversity of peoples in our neighborhoods, towns, schools, work, and world. Keeping with the theme of light as a metaphor for bridges between peoples of various faiths, we will also honor the Mided family for their generous donation of the new LED lighting in Shir Hadash’s sanctuary. Join us for an uplifting evening of worship and community.
Upcoming Services:

  • Friday, January 15, 7:30pm -- “Second Friday Speaker Series” Welcomes Ayal Weiner-Kaplow Be part of a very special homecoming, as Rabbi Eitan’s son Ayal presents The Nepal 2015 Earthquake: Firsthand Stories of Struggle and Hope. When Ayal set out for Nepal last year to work for an Israeli NGO, the last thing he expected was to be caught in the devastating April 2015 earthquake. Come hear about his dramatic experiences in post-earthquake Nepal as a part of relief efforts, and learn about our own connections as Jews to this tiny Himalayan nation

“The Name of God - Revealed”

Dear Friends,

In this week’s Torah portion, the Children of Israel are breaking under the strain of slavery and Moses is pleading to God for help. God reassures Moses that God will be with him and the Children of Israel.  God will see to it that they are freed.  How does God reassure?  God reveals the holy name – yod, heh, vav, heh.  Through revealing the Divine Name, God is making a covenant and a promise to be present and active in the lives of the Children of Israel.

The grammatical construction of God’s name is curious and puzzling, and therefore, we do not know how to pronounce God’s name.  It seems to be fashioned from three forms of the Hebrew verb “to be” - from past, present and future tenses. Thus, God’s very name seems to mean “Eternal One – The God that was, is and will be.”  A God whose name means “Eternal One,” must have come as reassurance to our ancestors who toiled under the persecution of slavery and poverty.  God would be with them.  For us, in our own day, the message is the same.  Through the worst of times and through the best of times, the God of our ancestors will be with us – now and always....
