Shir Hadash Cookbook -- Recipe Deadline Extended to January 30
We are going to publish the first ever Shir Hadash cookbook in 2016, and we still need some more recipes! We want our cookbook to reflect our diverse membership, so please submit your family favorites, Sephardic specialties, gluten-free recipes, etc.

The cookbook will be professionally published and contain special pages of interest, a table of contents, an index, helpful cooking hints, and recipe category dividers. Please submit three to five of your favorite recipes. We will strive to include at least one of your recipes. We've extended our deadline to January 30. Visit our website  for details and submission forms.

Book Club, January 28
Our next meeting will be on January 28 at 7:30pm. Please note our location change: we'll meet at the home of Rebecca Rice,  3641 Bernay Drive in Northbrook, to discuss A Backpack, A Bear and Eight Crates of Vodka: A Memoir by Lev Golinkin. This book is the memoir of a 10 year old boy on his journey from the Ukraine to America in 1990, at the height of Soviet Anti-Semitism.  For more information, contact Meryl Abensohn at abenkras@aol.com.

Lil Rev is Coming to Shir Hadash! Save the Date for New Coffee House Night - Concert Series, February 20
"Lil Rev is the Jewish Pete Seeger: a voice that just pulls you in, a raconteur, and a folksinger in the classic tradition of songs of justice, dignity and Jewish heritage." -- Rabbi Larry Milder.

On Saturday, February 20 at 7:30pm, Coffee House Night - Concert Series is delighted to announce our inaugural show: the fabulous, award-winning Jewish entertainer, Lil Rev, a talented multi-instrumentalist and storyteller. Lil Rev has put together a special variety show filled with stories and songs for us. Known for his ukulele and harmonica stylings, he’s equally adept at old time banjo, flat- pick guitar and blues mandolin. Click here for a video preview of Lil’s amazing performance style. As always, this event is offered for a free-will donation.

Please save February 20 for an incredible evening of musical entertainment and camaraderie. If you are interested in helping make this evening a success with baking or front of the house, please contact Margie at MargiePromoPro1@aol.com.

CREATIVE WORSHIP AND RITUAL

This Week's Services
  • Friday, January 15, 7:30pm -- “Second Friday Speaker Series” Welcomes Ayal Weiner-Kaplow -- Be part of a very special homecoming, as Rabbi Eitan’s son Ayal presents The Nepal 2015 Earthquake: Firsthand Stories of Struggle and Hope. When Ayal set out for Nepal last year to work for an Israeli NGO, the last thing he expected was to be caught in the devastating April 2015 earthquake. Come hear about his dramatic experiences in post-earthquake Nepal as a part of relief efforts, and learn about our own connections as Jews to this tiny Himalayan nation
  • Saturday, January 16, 9:30am -- Morning Shabbat and Bat Mitzvah Service -- We will welcome Hannah Heil to the Bima as Bat Mitzvah. All are welcome to participate in the service.

EDUCATION ANNOUNCEMENTS

Sunday School Goes to CJE Senior Life, January 17
The Torah teaches us in Leviticus 19:32, “You shall rise before the aged and show deference to the old; you shall revere your God: I am Adonai.”  The word translated as “deference” is hadar, which is connected to the ideas of beauty and appreciation.  We learn from this that to honor the “aged” is not simply to be polite when we encounter someone advanced in years, but to be active in showing appreciation and acknowledging the beauty of their souls and the lives they have lived.

It is with this in mind that this week our students will go to the Weinberg Community for Senior Living to spend time with some of its residents.  We will meet at the Weinberg Center (1551 Lake Cook Road, Deerfield) and our program will run from 10:00-11:30 a.m. featuring several avenues through which our students can teach, learn, sing and play with some of our revered elders.  This is a tremendous opportunity to engage in a powerful mitzvah and we hope that all of our students will take advantage of it.

No’ar Hadash Midwest Youth Kallah, February 12-14
We are going “Back Jew the Future” for this year’s Kallah (retreat) at Olin-Sang-Ruby Union Institute (OSRUI), February 12-14, 2016.  If you have a son or daughter in 6th-12th grade you should have received an email with all of the info, links, etc.  If you did not, please contact Rabbi Seeg at learning@shir-hadash.org.

Lunch & Learn with the Rabbis
All are welcome to join Rabbis Eitan Weiner-Kaplow and Scott Segal for a contemporary exploration of the weekly Torah portion.  We meet on Thursdays from noon to 1:00pm at Shir Hadash. Pack a lunch and come in!
