MEMBERSHIP AND UPCOMING EVENTS

Annual Meeting, May 22
The Shir Hadash Annual Members Meeting will be held on Sunday, May 22 at the synagogue. All members are encouraged to attend for a number of important purposes: we need a quorum to vote on our candidates for open Board positions and the proposed budget, and we will share information about exciting new membership and education initiatives. Please be sure to join us and share your opinions! Voting will open at 9:00am, and the formal meeting will start at 9:15. For more details, and information about absentee voting, please click here.

New! Synagogue Open House, June 9, 7:00 pm

Tell a friend, bring a friend, and share Shir Hadash!  On June 9, we are holding an open house for all prospective members.   They will have the chance to meet Rabbi Eitan and Rabbi Seeg as well as hear from current members on why Shir Hadash is such an amazing community.  This event is open to families with Religious School age students as well as empty nesters.  All we ask is that each of you take the time to think of one friend to let them know about this event and invite them.  If you want to get their information to the synagogue, email our executive director, Geoff Prass, at executivedirector@shir-hadash.org.

Solarbration in Review
Shir Hadash members of all ages gathered together this past Sunday, May 15 for the greatly anticipated Solarbration and dedication of the 360 Solar Panels on our roof.  We joined in song and joy as we celebrated this amazing act of Tikkun Olam (Healing of the World) that Shir Hadash has taken on.  If you missed the ceremony and/or have yet to donate to this important project, you can still do so by clicking here.

Book Club, May 23
Our next selection will be The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, a novel about two sisters in France choosing different paths during World War II. Our meeting will be this coming Monday, May 23, at the home of Mickey Herbin, 4050 Dundee Road #103, in Northbrook. Please RSVP to Meryl at abenkras@aol.com.

CREATIVE WORSHIP AND RITUAL

Services this Week
  • Shabbat Evening Service, Friday, May 20, 7:30pm -- This Friday night, we have a very special aspect of our service: Rabbi as archaeologist!  We are nearing Shavuot, one of the three major Pilgrimage Festivals when all of the Jews in the Holy Land used to come to Jerusalem and visit the Temple Mount.  So how were those holidays celebrated back then, and what do we know about what the Temple Mount was really like?  Well, Rabbi Eitan - who, some may not know, has an archaeology degree - will take us on a journey, through his slides, that will tell us what archaeology has uncovered for us in the Holy City.  Don't miss it - and don't forget to bring something for the oneg!
  • Shabbat Morning Bar Mitzvah Service, Saturday, May 21, 9:30am -- We welcome Michael Grills to the bima as Bar Mitzvah. All are welcome to participate in the service.

“Leave Food for the Poor and the Stranger (Leviticus 22:23)”

Dear Friends,

Jews are a generous people; the Talmud (Yevamot 78) describes performing acts of kindness as, “One of the symbols of our nation.” In this week’s Torah portion we are instructed to provide food to the hungry through our agricultural blessings. “And when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corner of your field, neither shall you gather the gleaning of your harvest; you shall leave them for the poor, and for the stranger.” (Leviticus 23:22) Every farmer is obligated to leave three types of gifts for the needy: food growing in the four corners of the field, food that was dropped during the harvest, and food that was forgotten or left because it was not ripe at harvest time — all to be collected by the poor. Notably, this is not simple charity. The poor must enter the field and collect the harvest gleanings, giving them a sense of dignity and ownership over their sustenance.

Most of us are no longer farmers and we have no fields to open to the poor and the stranger amongst us.  Yet, we are surrounded by stores and markets filled with wonderful and nutritious food.  There must be some way to get food to the needy and the hungry.  As the summer approaches and healthy fresh food comes into season, do your part to contribute to local, regional, and national food pantry and soup kitchen programs.  Bags of food and/or gifts of money go along way to helping the poor. Do your part to see that the ancient Jewish mitzvah of providing food to the outcasts of our society continues in a modern way.

Shabbat shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

TEEN NEWS

New Advisor Needed for Ra’am BBYO
A note from Carole Mostow:
Our Ra'am BBYO group is looking for a new female advisor (or two if you want to do this with a friend). While working with our group has been a complete pleasure, the time has come for me to step down as Ra'am advisor. So, if you want to make a significant impact in the lives of Jewish teens, read on!

BBYO advisors are volunteers committed to helping BBYO members and the chapter by serving as role models, sharing observations, exploring challenges, and seeking solutions with the teens. Advisors encourage and support the BBYO teens who are ultimately responsible for chapter programming with their peers. Becoming a BBYO advisor is an exciting and rewarding volunteer opportunity that will give you the chance to work with some incredible teens and wonderful regional staff and advisors from other chapters. You do not need to be a BBYO alum to be an advisor.

The BBYO chapter year runs from August to June and we would like to have someone on board over the summer for the transition period. If interested, please contact me at carolemostow@gmail.com, or Rabbi Seeg at learning@shir-hadash.org.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Summer Supper for the Homeless, July 18
Shir Hadash is partnering with Kingswood United Methodist Church, on Dundee Road in Buffalo Grove, to provide a Summer Supper for the homeless.  Help us provide food and volunteers for the BBQ at Kingswood on July 18.

We need five volunteers (16 years old and up) to set up, serve, and clean up after the meal. We also need many foods donations to make the BBQ a success.  Suzanne Wexler will have sign-up sheets at the Annual Meeting this Sunday, May 22, and will send out an e-mail with remaining spots next week.

Thanks for helping us make a difference in the lives of our neighbors in need. If you have questions, contact Suzanne at volunteer@shir-hadash.org.
