Synagogue Open House, June 9, 7:00 pm
Tell a friend, bring a friend, and share Shir Hadash! On June 9, we are holding an open house for all prospective members. They will have the chance to meet Rabbi Eitan and Rabbi Seeg as well as hear from current members on why Shir Hadash is such an amazing community. This event is open to families with Religious School age students as well as empty nesters. All we ask is that each of you take the time to think of one friend to let them know about this event and invite them. If you want to get their information to the synagogue, email our executive director, Geoff Prass, at executivedirector@shir-hadash.org. Additional Recipes Needed for Cookbook! Last Call, July 1

Book Club, May 23
Our next selection will be The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, a novel about two sisters in France choosing different paths during World War II. Our meeting will be this coming Monday, May 23, at the home of Mickey Herbin, 4050 Dundee Road #103, in Northbrook. Please RSVP to Meryl at abenkras@aol.com.
WISH Updates
WISH Updates
- Mah Jongg will start on Tuesday, May 31 at 12:30 at Shir Hadash. Please RSVP to Julie at juliewellisch@gmail.com. We only have two signed up so far and we need at least four to play. Beginners welcome -- we can teach you!
- Ravinia update: June 12 was sold out and June 23 was deemed undesirable because it was a weeknight, so that leaves us with the August 7 Dolly Parton show as out best choice. Please wait for verification that this doesn't conflict with other Shir Hadash events before purchasing lawn tickets.
- Please sign up to help at the Summer Supper for the Homeless (see Volunteer Opportunities, below, for details).
Gift Shop is Still Available!
Even though the school year is over, the Shir Hadash Gift Shop can still be contacted to fill your Judaica needs! We now carry beautiful tallit for your Bar or Bat Mitzvah, as well as Kosher scrolls for your mezuzah. To learn more or to make an appoinment to shop, email Allison Galvin, allison_galvin@yahoo.com.
CREATIVE WORSHIP AND RITUAL

THE RABBI’S CORNER

“Good Stewards”
Dear Friends,
A beautiful midrash story tells us that when Adam and Eve were in the
Garden of Eden, God came to them and showed them around. At the conclusion of the tour, God told them
to enjoy the bounty that has been created around them and, most important, to
care for it and be good stewards. God
said that if they polluted and destroyed the land, there would be no one to
repair or set it right.
This story speaks well for this week’s Torah portion, in which God tells
the Children of Israel that the earth belongs to God and that we are its
stewards. God reminds us that we are only here for a short while and that no
human can ever really ‘own’ a piece of the earth. Thus, our job is to cherish the beautiful
world that has been lent to us and then to keep, tend, and maintain it for
future generations and ourselves.
Now that the weather is warming and many of us are getting outside to
garden, mow, rake, plant, and water… remember to do your part to care for the
earth. Remember that we are only passing
through. Our descendants and all that live
on earth are counting on us to do a great job caring for planet earth.
