"Know Your Neighbor’s Religion” Panel Discussions, May 15 and 22
Bakers Needed!
Join us for a pair of panel discussions about the shared and unique aspects of the different traditions within Judaism and Christianity, presented by the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council. Speakers will describe each movement’s positions on key issues of faith, practice, and tradition, with time for questions from the audience.

Shir Hadash will host the first panel on Monday, May 15, offering perspectives on Reconstructionist, Reform, and Conservative Judaism. On Monday, May 22, presenters from the Catholic, Methodist, and Lutheran traditions will be on the panel at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1111 N. Elmhurst Road in Prospect Heights. Both discussions begin at 7:00pm.

We'd like to show our guests some hospitality on May 15 with some homebaked goodies and beverages. If you can participate in baking, please let Suzanne Wexler know at skwexler@yahoo.com. Trays should be dropped off at Shir Hadash by 6:30 on May 15. Thanks!

CREATIVE WORSHIP AND RITUAL

Shabbat Evening Service, Friday, May 12, 7:30pm

This week, we continue our new Second Fridays program of SHED Talks – the Shir Hadash version of TED Talks.  We begin with a brief Kabbalat Shabbat service, to welcome the Shabbat with song and story. Then, Shir Hadash members offer personal reflections on life, living, and Judaism. (And then, of course, we eat - so please bring something for the oneg.)  This week, we have two talks:

1) Mehran Farahmandpour: “How Iran's Islamic Revolution Shaped Me”
2) Melanie and Scarlett Andes: “From Klezmer to Cuba: How Learning about My Family’s History has Strengthened my Jewishness and Led Me to Cuba”

See you Friday night!

Shabbat Morning Bar Mitzvah Service, Saturday, May 13, 9:30am
We welcome Oliver Nye to the bima as Bar Mitzvah. Oliver's mitzvah project, an informal cello concert to raise money for University of Chicago Medicine's Celiac Disease Center, was recently profiled in the Deerfield Review. Mazel tov!

“Welcome and Be Welcomed”

Dear Friends,

What does it take to be welcomed in the homes of the community? This week’s Torah portion gives us a glimpse through a presentation of the laws concerning the Feast of the Harvest – Sukkot. For seven days, we are commanded to dwell within the harvest booths or sukkot – eating, sleeping, and celebrating in them.

It is said that the great and learned Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berdichev would welcome all kinds of people into his sukkah, from the learned to the simple, the wealthy to the poor. His students asked why he invited the simple and the poor into his sukkah. Rabbi Levi Yitzchak explained that when he dies and reaches the world to come, he, too, will want to be welcomed into the heavenly sukkah. Expecting to be refused entrance to sit amongst the truly righteous ones, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak will explain that on earth he welcomed everyone to his sukkah. Upon hearing his case, he is sure to be admitted.

The Jewish value is clear. What goes around does come around. When we welcome the community into our lives with love, sincerity, and compassion, we are sure to be welcomed into the homes of those in our community. This is how we build trust, warmth, and love. Welcome and be welcomed in return.

Zay a Mensch - Be a Good Person!

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

YOUTH EDUCATION

No Religious School on May 14
We look forward to seeing our students back at school to finish the year on May 21.

End of Year Celebration, May 21
Celebrate another fabulous year at our religious school, and say a fond farewell to our Director of Lifelong Learning as Rabbi Seeg heads to Colorado.  The end-of-school assembly will take place on May 21 at 11:30am-12:30pm, and immediately following the annual meeting.

"Paths of Righteousness" Class Raises Money to Help the Homeless
This year, eight Shir Hadash students have been learning about Jewish theology as it relates to social action, charitable giving, and doing good deeds, in our school's “Path of Righteousness” class. In addition to discussions about Jewish thought, the students participated in a few small projects while spending some time each class planning a large project to end the year. The students chose to do a bake sale out in the community followed by a trip to a store where they could buy items to be given out to homeless people. Each student baked loads of delicious treats, and then set up a decorated sales stall at the Palatine Jewel-Osco to sell their goods. With minimal help the students raised $126.88 in only two and a half hours by selling baked goods, lemonade and Kool-Aid. The class then took that money over to Target to buy practical items they thought homeless people would need or like. This week the class's teacher, Nat Arons, will record a video of the items being handed out to the homeless.

Kol Hakavod to all these caring and committed students and their teacher. Special thanks to Charlie for helping the students plan the project, and Sophie for helping to supervise the trip.

    ADULT EDUCATION

    Sunday Morning Hebrew Classes
Everyone is invited to participate in our adult education classes. Our regular Sunday schedule is:
    • Torah and Philosophy, 9:30-10:30am
    • Learning the Shir Hadash Prayer Book, 10:30-11:30am
    • Modern Hebrew, 11:30am-12:30pm
    Thursday Lunch 'n' Learn
Join Rabbi Eitan or Rabbi Seeg for a refreshing and contemporary exploration of the weekly Torah portion. We meet every Thursday at 1:00pm, no RSVP necessary. Don’t be surprised if archaeology, sociology, and contemporary world affairs as well as law, medicine, and business ethics enter the lively conversation as we plumb the deeper meanings of Judaism’s core text. Participants are encouraged to share their views, questions, and opinions.

    SOCIAL ACTION

Mail carriers across the country will be collecting food donations this weekend as part of the national Stamp Out Hunger food drive. ONGOING FUNDRAISERS

    Shir Hadash Memorial Wall
Shir Hadash is installing a Memorial Wall in the sanctuary, with individual plaques recording the Hebrew and English name of the deceased and the date of birth and passing. Having a Memorial Plaque for a loved one ensures that Yahrzeit will be observed for them in perpetuity by our congregation. On the Yahrzeit, or anniversary of the death, the lights next to the plaques of those whose death occurred on the same Hebrew date will be lit.

The cost for a plaque is $360. Many congregants prepay and reserve plaques. You may register for the plaque(s) through our web site, or request a paper order form by calling the office (847 498 8218),
