Saturday! Coffee House Night – Concert Series: Dave Levit and The Million Dollar Blues Band, May 6
Thank you all for supporting the Coffee House Night – Open Mic Style events! Your generous support  has enabled us to continue these events as well as add a "Concert Series" Program featuring a single performer or band.

This Saturday, our second Concert Series event features The Million Dollar Blues Band, with our own Dave Levit on drums. Dave assembled a custom, professional band that will play roots music (Blues, R&B, Soul, Jazz, and Rock-n-Roll), with an eye to contributions the Jewish writers, performers, producers, and record execs who helped bring this music from the street to the stage.  Photos and some history of the period will accompany the show.

Doors open at 6:30pm, and the show starts at 7:30pm. As always, this event is offered for a free-will donation. Seating is limited. Click here to reserve your seats, or email Margie at MargiePromoPro1@aol.com with “Blues Concert” in the subject line.  If you’d like to be part of the Coffee House Night Team, please indicate your interest in the Reservation form or email Margie.

“Know Your Neighbor’s Religion” Panel Discussions, May 15 and 22
Join us for a pair of panel discussions about the shared and unique aspects of the different traditions within Judaism and Christianity, presented by the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council. Speakers will describe each movement’s positions on key issues of faith, practice, and tradition, with time for questions from the audience.

Shir Hadash will host the first panel on Monday, May 15, offering perspectives on Reconstructionist, Reform, and Conservative Judaism. On Monday, May 22, presenters from the Catholic, Methodist, and Lutheran traditions will be on the panel at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1111 N. Elmhurst Road in Prospect Heights. Both discussions begin at 7:00pm.

Book Club, May 16
The next Book Club selection will be Sarah: The Life of Sarah Bernhardt by Robert Gottlieb. This is the biography of a famous – and infamous – Parisian actress who was Jewish. Art Deco posters of the actress by Alphonse Mucha are currently on display at the Driehaus Museum at 40 East Erie Street in Chicago. The Book Club will meet on May 16 at the home of Melanie Andes, 945 Creek Bend Drive in Vernon Hills.

A Festive Send-off for Rabbi Seeg, May 19
Join the Shir Hadash Community on Friday, May 19 at 7:30pm for a music-filled, family-friends, and festive Friday night service. We will honor Rabbi Seeg for his contributions to our school, services, and adult education.

Annual Meeting and Elections, May 21
The Shir Hadash 2017 annual meeting will be held on Sunday, May 21 at 9:15am at the synagogue.  (The meeting will be followed by the annual end-of-the-year School Assembly.) You will be asked to vote on nominees for open positions on the Board of Directors, and to approve the Shir Hadash budget for 2017-18.

CREATIVE WORSHIP AND RITUAL

Family Shabbat, May 5, 5:30pm
Join us for Nachos and Nachas! Bring the kids or grandkids for a casual supper, followed by a brief, family-friendly service, activity, and dessert.

Shabbat Evening Service, May 5, 7:30pm
Join us for an exciting and engaging all-ages service at 7:30pm. The Lahaka will lead us in song -- and this will be their last appearance until the High Holidays, so you won’t want to miss it! The Torah portion this week is one of the most important: The Holiness Code, special rules for living a holy life. We will read parts of the Code and discuss how it still speaks to us today. Are there any rules that we would add, as modern Jews? Come and discuss (and please bring something to share at the oneg)!

Shabbat Morning Bar Mitzvah Service, Saturday, May 6, 9:30am
We welcome Jordan Curtis to the bima as Bar Mitzvah.

Oneg Volunteers Needed for May and June Services
Please sign up to help as an oneg volunteer for one of our upcoming services. It's easy: just click here to pick a date, bring a challah, and show up! You'll receive a reminder email the week before with more details. For more information, contact Sean Fisher-Rohde at oneg@shir-hadash.org.

"Live By Them”

Dear Friends,

Every time we raise a glass in celebration, we exclaim, “L’chayim – To Life.” This critical foundation of Jewish identity can be found in this week’s Torah portion, the Holiness Code.  We find rules and commandments for living a good and holy life, amongst them, honor your parents. Observe the Shabbat. Do not worship idols. Eat good food. Support the poor, the hungry, and the stranger. Don’t steal. Deal honestly with one another. Don’t swear falsely by God’s name. Don’t defraud your neighbor. Pay laborers on the day they work. Don’t insult the deaf nor trip up the blind. Love your neighbor as yourself.

The reason given for all these directions is that we might “live by them.”  Through a well-ordered society and the rule of law, we are all elevated and we all can live productive and meaningful lives.

Zay a mentsch – be a good person.

L’chaim – to life.

    ONGOING FUNDRAISERS

    Shir Hadash Memorial Wall
Shir Hadash is installing a Memorial Wall in the sanctuary, with individual plaques recording the Hebrew and English name of the deceased and the date of birth and passing. Having a Memorial Plaque for a loved one ensures that Yahrzeit will be observed for them in perpetuity by our congregation. On the Yahrzeit, or anniversary of the death, the lights next to the plaques of those whose death occurred on the same Hebrew date will be lit.

The cost for a plaque is $360. Many congregants prepay and reserve plaques. You may register for the plaque(s) through our web site, or request a paper order form by calling the office (847 498 8218),

Fundraiser Information Now Available on Shul Cloud
You can help Shir Hadash at no extra cost to you by taking advantage of a variety of ongoing fundraisers, including iGive, Amazon Smile, and more. For complete details, click here.
