Join the Shul Cloud Support Team
Want to help out, but hate going to meetings? Read on! We are looking for a few good people to help on the Shul Cloud team. If you have been looking for a way to get involved with helping the synagogue and have some knowledge in technology -- we want you! We are looking for people who:
  • Enjoy teaching and coaching
  • Have experience with computers other than word processing
  • Have experience with web or graphic design
After initial training, there are no regular meetings. You get to help out the shul in a very needed way, and everything can be done from home! Everything thing we do is task based -- assuming we have a full team, we will be able to flex the work around different schedules and skill sets easily.
Interested? Please contact Geoff or Lise Schleicher at info@shir-hadash.org as soon as possible. We hope to get the team trained and running in early August.

THE RABBI’S CORNER

August 11-12, 2017 / 20 Av 5777
Shabbat Ekev
Torah: Deuteronomy 7:12 - 11:25 / Haftarah: Isaiah 49:14 - 51:3
“One Hundred Blessings”

Dear Friends,
Why do we say the Motzi blessing, which proclaims that God brings forth bread from the earth?  I have never seen nor heard of a loaf of bread growing from the earth nor emerging from it. Yet, we still say the blessing!
In this week’s Torah portion, Moses is preparing the Children of Israel for the time when they will enter the Promised Land and experience a life of abundance. There will be plenty of food and water.  The rocks of the Land will supply metals. The Land will flow with milk and honey. Yet, Moses is concerned that the people will take it all for granted and believe that they are responsible for their comfort. They will come to forget that all their wealth is a true gift from God. So, Moses warns them not to eat without thanking God. They are not to enjoy the gifts of the Land without recognizing God as the source of all.
This is a fundamental Jewish principle, to recognize that God is the source of all blessing and abundance. That’s why our tradition tells us to say at least one hundred blessings every day.  So think about it, are there one hundred things in your life each day for which you can show your appreciation and give thanks? Start with waking up in the morning, breathing, standing, walking, seeing, and being free. Then add your appreciation for wonderful clothing, food, work, comfortable homes, and of course bread. You get the idea.
Your challenge this week: One hundred blessings every day.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

ISRAEL AWARENESS

Join the Israel Committee
Please reach out regarding this newsletter section to Ed Rice (e.rice1@comcast.net) or Burton Kopulsky (bkopulsky@chicagobooth.edu) of the SH Israel Committee. They appreciate your feedback, ideas, and suggestions. They are looking for additional members to join them on the committee and enhance Israel-related programming at Shir Hadash.

What is it really like in the Palestinian territories and do the Palestinian leaders really want peace?
These are important questions as Israeli leaders seek a productive dialog with the Palestinians. Here is an interesting article from a writer who went into Palestinian-controlled areas and met with one of their key leaders.

For an "undercover" perspective on the Israel-Palestinian conflict, check out this hilarious but disturbing book written by a Jew who, fluent in Hebrew, Arabic, English and German, interviewed and befriended a variety of folks on both sides of the conflict. The book is available at local libraries in our area and at Amazon.
