Annual Potluck Picnic, August 27
It's time again for our annual day of Fun, Food, Family & Friends! Our annual community picnic will kick off at 4:00pm in the Shir Hadash courtyard on Sunday, April 27.

Great activities for kids (of all ages!) will be put together by the School Advisory Committee, and Rabbi Eitan will lead music. This is a great opportunity to bring family and friends who would like to get a taste of Shir Hadash!

We will be grilling Kosher hamburgers & Kosher hot dogs, plus vegetarian options. Please click here to RSVP and tell us what dishes or desserts you'd like to bring. If you have any questions, please contact the office at 847-498-8218.

Membership Renewal Forms Now Open
It's time to renew your membership in Shir Hadash for the coming year. In an effort to streamline the process and reduce the use of paper, all our forms are now available on Shul Cloud. Click here for detailed information. (If you prefer to use paper forms for your registration, please contact our office at 847 498 8218.)  Please complete your renewal by July 31. Torah Readers Needed for High Holidays
The High Holidays will be here before we know it - only about two months away.  We have a particular need for Torah readers or chanters on Rosh Hashanah Day 2 and Yom Kippur afternoon, but we do have a few slots still available on Rosh Hashanah Day 1 and Yom Kippur morning.  We are especially interested in having recent bar and bat mitzvahs come up and chant Torah.

If you volunteer, we will e-mail to you an MP3 of the Rabbi chanting the portion, plus a written copy of the portion in Hebrew and English - and you can get help from the Rabbi and Dawn in getting ready to chant.  So if you (or your son or daughter) are interested, please let Fred Andes know at fandes@btlaw.com or 773 354 3100. Feel free to contact Fred with any questions as well

“Shema: Its Deeper Meaning”

Dear Friends,
What do we mean when we recite Shema Yisrael – Listen Israel, the Eternal One is our God, the Eternal One alone? Beyond the familiar sounds and syllables and beyond the comfortable melody that Jews have sung for centuries, what is the underlying message of this central utterance of the Jewish people – the ‘watchword of our faith’?  Philip Cohen offered these insights of Maimonides, the great medieval commentator.
“The Shema, says Maimonides, affirms the unity of all that exists and will exist. God’s power embraces everything. It is the primary Cause uniting the countless stars of the cosmos; the green globe of earth with its complex web of life; and the yesterday, today, and tomorrow of humanity. In the declaration of the Shema, Jews acknowledge that God is not mortal, not limited by human frailties, and not a symbol reducible to stone, wood, or artistic images. God, Maimonides argues, is the One Power that creates all that is.” (Philip Cohen, Rambam on the Torah as found in Harvey Fields, A Torah Commentary for Our Times).

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow
