MEMBERSHIP NEWS AND EVENTS
Membership Renewal Time
It's time to renew your commitment/membership in Shir Hadash for the coming year. In an effort to streamline the process and reduce the use of paper, all our forms will, once again, be available on ShulCloud. (If you prefer to use paper forms for your registration, please contact our office at 847-498-8218.) Detailed information and instructions were sent out last week. Please complete your renewal by July 31. If you need assistance, contact Julie Wellisch at admin@shir-hadash.org, or our Executive Director Geoff Prass at geoff@shir-hadash.org.
Gift of Membership
Every renewing member will receive a Gift of Membership certificate in the mail, along with information on the program. Use the Gift to provide a free one-year membership to a friend or relative who has never been a regular or a High Holiday member of Shir Hadash previously. Your gift includes the recipient’s access to the High Holidays provided that their certificate is received at the office no later than Friday, August 17. Please note, the Gift eliminates dues for the full year. It does not include school tuition or fees.

If it is too hot outside, we will retreat to the AC. We will provide s'mores and beverages; please bring a nosh to share. If you are partaking of the hot tub, please bring your suit and towel. This is a family-friendly event -- we would love to see you and your kids!
The Schleichers are on the NE corner of Dehne and Western, 2384 Dehne Ave. in Northbrook. Please note that Western Ave. is under construction and SAYS "road closed" but generally is passable from north to south in the evenings. Israeli Film Night, July 28
We have an exciting movie planned for the evening of July 28 at 7:30. We will be showing The Band's Visit, a highly praised Israeli film that inspired this year's Tony award-winning Best Musical. It's a fantastic film with an inspiring message. Admission is free and snacks will be available for purchase.
Shir Hadash needs to pay a licensing fee every time we hold a movie screening. If anyone is interested in helping by donating or being a sponsor, please contact Burton Kopulsky at bkopulsk@chicagobooth.edu.
Coming Soon: The Backpack Project
Shir Hadash is proud to be participating in The Backpack Project, coordinated by The Ark. This project ensures that school-age children in need have both a backpack and the necessary school supplies to allow them to be successful in school this Fall. Donations will be collected this July. Each backpack will need to be stocked with the necessary school supplies and will need to be delivered to the Synagogue or to Alan Bernover by July 25. More information will follow as to what items are needed to participate in this worthy endeavor.

“Miriam’s Well”
Dear Friends,
What is it about Miriam, the sister of Moses and Aaron that captures our imagination? She was not a political leader, not a religious leader, nor a public figure. Miriam symbolizes life and joy. Her very name, Mir-yam, means salt water – referring to the life-giving properties of the sea. Thus, the theme of water would accompany her throughout her life.
We meet Miriam as she followed Moses’ basket down the Nile River. When Pharaoh’s daughter found the child, it was Miriam who bravely approached and offered to find a wet nurse for Moses. Later, upon crossing the Sea of Reeds, Miriam led the people in a dance of celebration and thanksgiving. Years later, in this week’s Torah portion, Miriam died and suddenly the wells dried up and people complained for water.
There is a long folk tradition of Miriam’s Well that accompanied the Israelites through the desert. Miriam’s presence, power, and life energy sustained the Israelites from slavery to the Promised Land.
Everyone has precious gifts to share. Everyone has talents and skills that contribute to the good of all. Miriam’s gift and legacy was life itself.
Zay a mentsch – be a good person.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

ISRAEL AWARENESS
Did You Know? Facts About Israel
The big winner in musicals at this year's Tony awards was The Band's Visit which is based on a 2007 Israeli film about a group of Egyptian musicians who accidentally end up staying in an Israeli town.
It won best musical and it took three out of the four acting awards!
Israeli actor Sasson Gabai will be heading to New York this summer to take up the lead role on stage that he played in the 2007 film, Egyptian Colonel Tewfiq Zakaria.
We will be showing the original film that inspired this musical at Shir Hadash! See the upcoming events section of this newsletter.
