THE RABBI’S CORNER

June 15-16, 2018 / 3 Tammuz 5778
Shabbat Korach
Torah: Numbers 16:1 - 18:32 /  Haftarah: I Samuel 11:14 - 12:22
“Democracy”
Dear Friends,
Is democracy an ancient Jewish idea? Although it is a key component of the American Jewish experience, democracy is not an early Jewish concept. In this week’s Torah portion Korah and his followers challenge the leadership of Moses and Aaron citing that all the people are holy and anyone should have the opportunity to lead. Moses set up a competition to prove who should lead and in the end Moses and Aaron were the clear winners. Korah and his band are swallowed up by a huge hole in the earth. Those who complained about the harsh sentence died in a plague - 17,400 people!  Aaron’s descendants maintained control of the priesthood until the Temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE.
Only after Temple worship ceased did a new group of leaders emerge, known as the rabbis. These leaders were selected based on a meritocracy. The most talented scholars lead the academies and the communities.

Zay a mentsch – be a good person.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

Did You Know? Facts About Israel
Jerusalem’s Mount of Olives is the oldest active burial site in the world and is home to more than 150,000 Jewish graves.
Many Jews have wanted to be buried on the Mount of Olives since antiquity because Jewish tradition holds that the resurrection of the dead will begin there when the Messiah comes.
Eleven separate Jewish burial societies operate on the Mount of Olives.
Many famous individuals are buried on the Mount including Menachem Begin, the mother of Prince Phillip the Duke of Edinburgh, multiple Chief Rabbis and Chassidic Rebbes, Eliezer Ben Yehuda the father of modern Hebrew, and Henrietta Szold the founder of Hadassah.
