THE RABBI’S CORNER

February 1-2, 2019 / 27 Shevat 5779 / Shabbat Mishpatim
Torah – Exodus 21:1–24:18 / Jeremiah 34:8 - 34:22; 33:25 - 33:26

“Respect the Stranger”

Dear Friends,
The Israelites have just escaped from Egypt and received the Torah at Mount Sinai.  One would think that all attention would now be given to unifying our people and ignoring others.  Yet, much attention is given to teaching proper moral and ethical behavior towards the stranger who might live in our midst.  It is almost as if the Torah knew that throughout Jewish history, we Jews would always live in relationship with non-Jews – that we would always be interacting with people of different nations.

Torah commentator Umberto Cassuto sums up the Jewish teaching this way. “It is forbidden to wrong or oppress the stranger… the reason given is purely ethical: you yourselves suffered as sojourners in a strange land, and you know the soul of the sojourner; therefore, take heed not to embitter the life of the sojourner living in your midst jut as you did not wish the Egyptians to embitter your lives when you dwelt among them. (Umberto Cassuto on Exodus 22:20 and 23:9.)

Zay a mentsch -- Be a good person! Respect the Stranger!

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

SOCIAL ACTION
PADS Homeless Shelter Seeking Volunteers  -- Kingswood Church in Buffalo Grove hosts the homeless on Tuesday nights year 'round.  Typically 40-45 men, women and children come each week and are given a hot meal for dinner, a warm safe place to sleep, a shower, breakfast, a sack lunch and, most importantly, a welcoming environment serving up dignity and a smile.  We currently have two very specific shifts we need help with - Cleaning (7:00-8:00am on Wednesday mornings) and Laundry Transport (pick up at Kingswood Church on Wednesday morning, drop off at local hotel who cleans the linens for free on Wednesday afternoon, and then pick up the laundry on Thursday and return it to Kingswood Church).  People typically volunteer for these roles once or twice a month, or even once a quarter is helpful!

If you are able to volunteer in either of these roles, please be in touch with Suzanne Wexler - skwexler@yahoo.com; 847-769-8257.
