“Lighting the Way”

Dear Friends,

What is the symbol of the Jewish people?  Most will answer that it is the six-pointed Star of David.  We wear the Magen David symbol on necklaces and it is emblazoned on Israel’s flag.  We even call it the ‘Jewish Star.’  Yet, the Star of David is a relatively new symbol for Judaism and the Jewish people, dating probably to the late Middle Ages.
The older and more traditional, and some say more authentic symbol of Judaism is the seven-branched candelabrum called the ‘Menorah.’  The menorah is first described in this week’s Torah portion as one of the implements to be fashioned for the Israelites’ portable desert shrine.

Some say that the seven branches stand for the days of the week.  All are lit on the Shabbat.  Others say that the number seven stands for wholeness and completion.  The seven lights at the top of each branch are to be on the same level with none raised higher than any of the others.  This indicates equality and fairness.

Our Shir Hadash logo contains an impression of a menorah through the seven globes across the upper horizontal element.  The spheres are of ascending size representing all the different ages in our congregation that comprise our community – from children to adults.  Thus, the menorah comes to represent a fundamental Jewish value. Everyone has an important role to play in building our community.  Everyone is welcome.

Zay a mentsch - Be a good person!

Shabbat Shalom
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

Did You Know? Facts About Israel - Election Edition

  • Israel will be having an election for the 21st Knesset (Parliament) on April 9. Israel has no electoral districts. The selected members of Knesset reflect their parties' share of the national vote subject to a minimum of 3.25% of the vote.
  • Electoral terms are four years; however, the Knesset can be dissolved early which is why this election is being held now.
  • After the election, the President of Israel (a largely ceremonial post) picks a member of Knesset to form a government based on the parties selected in the election. That person, after forming a government, becomes the Prime Minister. Israel briefly experimented with direct elections for the Prime Minister in the 1990s and 2001, but ended up dropping that idea.

New! Birthright Israel Opportunities – Spring and summer dates have been announced for Birthright Israel trips. Multiple opportunities are available for college students, graduates, and adults 27 to 32. For details, visit IsraeliwithIsraelis.com

Israeli Film Series at Shir Hadash -  Look for more Israeli films at the synagogue in the future. Suggestions are welcome! The next film is tentatively scheduled for April 6.

SOCIAL ACTION

New! Soup Kitchen Help Needed, March 3 -- On Sunday, March 3, Shir Hadash will be serving over 90 meals to needy individuals at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church inner faith soup kitchen in Evanston.  We need six to eight families (20-25 people total) who are able to prepare, cook and serve at this meaningful event. Volunteers must be available from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.  This is a great family event because there is no age limit to volunteer, but from past experience, kids should be at least six years old to safely participate in this event.

Each family will be responsible for bringing a precooked meat or pasta entrée (in disposable dish, not vegetarian), a large bag uncooked frozen mixed vegetables, dessert,  and bags of fresh fruit (oranges, tangerines etc) that can feed approximately 12-15 people. This may be a lot for some families to provide, so please feel free to join with another family to bring a meal.

If you are interested in helping, please contact Mark Lenhart as soon as possible at mjlenhart@comcast.net.

New! Tzedakah for the ARK -- Tzedakah collections for February and March will help the ARK do its important work of providing medical care, food, and other basic necessities to more than 4,000 Chicagoland Jewish families. The ARK assists them in navigating self-reliance by providing free, comprehensive services within a framework of Jewish values and laws.
