THE RABBI’S CORNER

April 19-20, 2019 / 15 Nisan 5779 / Shabbat Pesach Day 1

“Let All Who Are Hungry Come And Eat”

Dear Friends,

Early in the Passover seder, we are told to break the middle matzah and recite, “This is the bread of poverty, which our ancestors ate in the Land of Egypt.  Let all who are hungry come and eat…”  While this presents an opportunity to invite guests to our seder table, it is a call to reach out to all who are hungry.  It is our Jewish way of reminding ourselves of the importance of providing food to the needy.

The 5th century Jewish text, Avot d’Rabbi Natan, offers this teaching about the attitude with which we must help those in need: “If one gives to another all the good gifts of the world, but shows a sour face, in the eyes of Torah, it is as if nothing had been given.  However, if one welcomes a person in need cheerfully and kindly, then the Torah regards it as if all the good gifts in the world had been given.”

This year, as we enjoy our Passover feast, please remember those in need.  Make donations to your local food pantries and soup kitchens.  Let all who are hungry come and eat.
I wish you and your families a healthy, happy, and joyous Passover!

Chag Same’ach and Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow
