CREATIVE WORSHIP AND RITUAL

No Shabbat Evening Service on June 28 -- We hope you enjoy celebrating Shabbat with your family.

Hot Tub Havdalah, Saturday, July 6, 6:00pm -- We are excited to announce that the Family Shabbat Havdalah event that was originally scheduled for June 22 will now take place at 6:30 pm on Saturday, July 6 at the home of  Lise and Sandi Schleicher as part of our annual Hot Tub Havdalah.  We will have a family-friendly Havdalah service that night while enjoying some games, dessert and a dip in the hot tub (bring your bathing suits).  This is a dessert event – please be sure to eat dinner beforehand.  Adults--wine will be added after the families leave!

This event is a tradition at Shir Hadash and will be an amazing night for everyone!  Please click here to let us know if you can attend, and if you can bring any outdoor games, dessert and drinks to share with others. When you register you will be given the address of the home location.

Sponsor an Oneg! Having a birthday, anniversary or remembrance? You can sponsor an oneg to celebrate. A dessert oneg is $136 and everybody appreciates and enjoys your hospitality. The donation covers all food, including a special celebration cake.  Please contact Nancy Kekst, execdir@shir-hadash.org to make arrangements.
Oneg Volunteers Needed for Services--Sign up to help as an oneg volunteer for one of our upcoming services. It's easy: just click here to pick a date, bring a challah, and show up! You'll receive a reminder email the week before with more details. For more information, contact Sean Fisher-Rohde at oneg@shir-hadash.org.

THE RABBI’S CORNER

June 28-29, 2019 / 26 Sivan 5779 / Shabbat Shelach Lecha
Torah: Numbers 13:1 - 15:41 / Haftarah: Joshua 2:1 - 24

“Tzitzit”

Dear Friends,

This week’s Torah portion includes the commandment to wear tzitzit fringes on the four corners of our clothing.  Nowadays, most wear the fringes on a tallit prayer shawl during daytime worship services.

Why do we wear them?  The tzitzit fringes are a symbol of the covenant between Israel and God. They represent our obligation to follow Jewish law, tradition, morals, and heritage.  They are a key emblem of Jewish identity.

Some say that the tzitzit represent the 613 commandments of Torah law.  The Torah commentator Rashi maintains that wearing the tzitzit fringes and seeing them remind us of the obligation to follow the commandments.  Earlier commentators said, “looking leads to remembering them, and remembering them leads to doing them.”

I encourage you all to try wearing a tallit at a daytime worship service.

Zay a Mentsch – Be a Good Person.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Torah and Jewish Philosophy Summer Schedule -- While Religious School is on summer break, our Torah/Jewish Philosophy Adult Ed class with Fred Andes will continue to meet every other Sunday morning, at an off-site location that involves coffee and baked goods.  Anyone who is interested in sitting in for any part of the summer should contact Fred at fandes@btlaw.com for details.

MEMBERSHIP NEWS AND EVENTS
Holiday Schedule: PLEASE NOTE: The synagogue office will be closed July 3-7 for the Independence Day Holiday. Watch your mail for information regarding membership renewal and school registration for next year.

Landscaping Help Needed --  Our landscaping volunteers could use some extra hands with watering to keep everything looking bright and healthy.  We have new plantings in three parking lot islands that need watering this summer.  New sumac bushes are in two of the islands and our colorful annuals in the island facing the synagogue entrance. The hoses and hose reel are right in front, to make it more convenient for watering.  If you can help out a few times this summer, call or text Deb Harrison, (847) 997-9629. Thanks!

Sunday in the Park with Bagels, July 14 -- Shir Hadash will have a table at the Northwest Suburban Jewish Connectors' July event for young families at Deerpath Park in Vernon Hills.  This is a fun opportunity to introduce our congregation to potential new members.  Register in advance here. If you would like to volunteer at our table, please contact Nancy Kleine Kekst, execdir@shir-hadash.org.

Have You Heard? Shir Hadash Adopt Voluntary Commitment Model. What does it mean for you?  Membership renewal starts July 8 for everyone.  We will be calling everyone to discuss the new voluntary commitment program and to answer your questions.  Our hope is to speak with every member either in person or by phone by July 8.  The calls should take about five minutes. There is no need to wait for us to call.  Feel free to reach out to us either by phone or email to schedule a time to chat.

ONGOING FUNDRAISERS

Dedication of Twelve Tribes Bimah Panels --  Celebrating our fifth anniversary in our building, our Twelve Tribes bimah ark panels are a combined creation of artists Maureen Fisher Schweit and Abe Schor, who worked together on concept, design and colors.
You are invited to participate in this fundraising historic project by dedicating all or part of a panel. Each panel dedication is $1,800; panels may be dedicated by more than one person and families may pool resources to dedicate one panel (e.g, $180 each by 10 people).  Donors will be acknowledged on our new donor wall next to the Simcha Tree. The panel dedications will remain in perpetuity, or as long as the art remains in our sanctuary.  (They will not expire in 18 years as originally stated.) To learn more about the Bimah Panels, click here.  For questions, panel reservation, choice and payment options, contact Executive Director Nancy Kleine Kekst at (216) 789-2452 (mobile) or email execdir@shir-hadash.org.
