Saturday! Hot Tub Havdalah, July 6, 6:30pm -- Don't miss this weekend's Family Shabbat Havdalah event at 6:30 pm on Saturday, July 6 at the home of Lise and Sandi Schleicher as part of our annual Hot Tub Havdalah. We will have a family-friendly Havdalah service that night while enjoying some games, dessert and a dip in the hot tub (bring your bathing suits). This is a dessert event – please be sure to eat dinner beforehand. Adults--wine will be added after the families leave!
This event is a tradition at Shir Hadash and will be an amazing night for everyone!

Upcoming: Shabbat Services July 19 and 20 -- Mark your calendar for a Shabbat evening service on Friday, July 19, and a special family Shabbat morning featuring blessings for the dogs, cats, and other animals who are part of our families. Details coming next week.
Bike Shabbat, July 27 -- Join Shir Hadash friends for an invigorating bike ride culminating in a Shabbat Torah study and a nosh at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Details and registration here.
Sponsor an Oneg! Having a birthday, anniversary or remembrance? You can sponsor an oneg to celebrate. A dessert oneg is $136 and everybody appreciates and enjoys your hospitality. “Honesty and Transparency”
Dear Friends,
This week’s Torah portion tells the story of Korah’s rebellion against the leadership of Moses and Aaron out in the desert on the way to Promised Land. According to the Torah commentary Numbers Rabbah, Korah went to each tribe accusing Moses and Aaron of misconduct. He told them that he was not like Moses and Aaron, who were leading the Children of Israel in order to gain fame and power for themselves. Korah said that his aim was for all the people to enjoy life. Thus, he won the support of so many by misleading them.
Eventually, the rebellion was put down and Moses and Aaron continued their leadership. Our Jewish tradition teaches us to lead with honesty and transparency.

Torah and Jewish Philosophy Summer Schedule -- While Religious School is on summer break, our Torah/Jewish Philosophy Adult Ed class with Fred Andes will continue to meet every other Sunday morning, at an off-site location that involves coffee and baked goods. Anyone who is interested in sitting in for any part of the summer should contact Fred at fandes@btlaw.com for details.
Holiday Schedule: PLEASE NOTE: The synagogue office will be closed until July 8 for the Independence Day Holiday. Watch your mail for information regarding membership renewal and school registration for next year.
Sunday in the Park with Bagels, July 14 -- Shir Hadash will have a table at the Northwest Suburban Jewish Connectors' July event for young families at Deerpath Park in Vernon Hills. This is a great recruitment event for Shir Hadash. Come and join our table, run by Lynne Arons, as we explore the aleph-bet through crafts for young families.Register here and wear your Shir Hadash gear!
Poolside BBQ Party, July 27 -- You're invited for an evening of food, friends, and relaxation at Mehran Farahmandpour's house in Long Grove, beginning at 6:00pm. We will BBQ, enjoy some wine, sit poolside and enjoy an evening of community. The menu will include Kosher hot dogs, burgers, vegetarian burgers, and more, plus dessert, of course!
If interested in swimming, you are welcome to bring your swimsuit. On the chance of rain, we will relocate indoors.

Have You Heard? Shir Hadash Adopt Voluntary Commitment Model. What does it mean for you? Membership renewal starts July 8 for everyone. We will be calling everyone to discuss the new voluntary commitment program and to answer your questions. Our hope is to speak with every member either in person or by phone by July 8. The calls should take about five minutes. There is no need to wait for us to call. Feel free to reach out to us either by phone or email to schedule a time to chat.

Landscaping Help Needed -- Our landscaping volunteers could use some extra hands with watering to keep everything looking bright and healthy. We have new plantings in three parking lot islands that need watering this summer. New sumac bushes are in two of the islands and our colorful annuals in the island facing the synagogue entrance. The hoses and hose reel are right in front, to make it more convenient for watering. If you can help out a few times this summer, call or text Deb Harrison, (847) 997-9629.

ONGOING FUNDRAISERS
Dedication of Twelve Tribes Bimah Panels -- Celebrating our fifth anniversary in our building, our Twelve Tribes bimah ark panels are a combined creation of artists Maureen Fisher Schweit and Abe Schor, who worked together on concept, design and colors.
You are invited to participate in this fundraising historic project by dedicating all or part of a panel. Each panel dedication is $1,800; panels may be dedicated by more than one person and families may pool resources to dedicate one panel (e.g, $180 each by 10 people). Donors will be acknowledged on our new donor wall next to the Simcha Tree. The panel dedications will remain in perpetuity, or as long as the art remains in our sanctuary. Simcha Tree Leaves Available for Purchase - Our Tree of Joy—a Simcha Tree—is situated in our Community Room to remind us of all the joys of our lives. The leaves come in copper, silver, and gold. Each leaf marks a lasting memory of a joyous simcha in the lives of members of Shir Hadash. We invite you to add your loved ones’ simchas to our Tree and share your nachas with our congregation or just add your loved ones’ names out of love. Don’t Forget Our Permanent Restaurant Fundraisers - Now Including Flappy’s!--The Continental Restaurant in Buffalo Grove, Butterfield’s Restaurant in Northbrook, and now all three locations of Flappy’s will donate 5% of your total bill to Shir Hadash! No flyer needed – just mention Shir Hadash when you are paying or fill out the Shir Hadash book behind the desk.
Shir Hadash Memorial Wall--Having a Memorial Plaque for a loved one in Shir Hadash’s Memorial Wall ensures that Yahrzeit will be observed for them in perpetuity by our congregation.The cost for a plaque is $360. Many congregants prepay and reserve plaques.You may register for the plaque(s) through our website, or request a paper order form by calling the office (847-498-8218).
