CREATIVE WORSHIP AND RITUAL

Multigenerational Shabbat Sukkot Service, Friday October 2, 7:00 p.m.  “To Everything there is a Season” -- Rabbi Eitan will lead the Zoom service from his home sukkah.  Families are encouraged to join from their own sukkah, porch, yard.  At this special Shabbat Sukkot service we will sing special Sukkot songs and watch a puppet show about the lulav and etrog. We’ll read selections from the book of Ecclesiastes. Through these verses we come to appreciate the vastness of the universe and all that the natural world gives us.

Shabbat Morning Bar Mitzvah Service, Saturday October 3 (No Zoom stream.) Mazel tov to Matthew!

Next Week! Family & Community Zoom Shabbat Simchat Torah Celebration, Friday October 9, 7:00 p.m. The Jewish festival of Simchat Torah celebrates our love for our Jewish tradition of learning and studying sacred scripture, the Torah.  This is a great family holiday celebration!  We will read the last few lines of the Torah and then the first few lines, thus finishing and beginning our study anew.  And of course, we will dance, and have taffy apples!  We’ll have joyous klezmer music played on the Zoom screen, and you can dance to it at home - but also make sure to order your taffy apples (see details below), and then pick them up from the synagogue on Thursday, October 8, so you can enjoy them on Zoom with everyone else on Friday night!

“Ushpizin – Welcoming Guests”

Dear Friends,

There is a profoundly mystical side to the Sukkot festival that begins this evening.  It is found in the tradition of ‘Ushpizin’ or inviting ‘spiritual’ guests into our sukkah to join our celebration.  While the sukkah, a fragile dwelling, represents the temporary homes of our ancestors in ancient times.  With Ushpizin, we call upon our ancestors’ strength, vision and hope and invite them to dwell with us during our week-long observance.  Each evening, different guests are invited, such as Abraham & Sarah, Isaac & Rebecca, Jacob & Leah, Moses & Chana, etc.  We can also call upon our own relatives and friends, either deceased or living, but not able to be present, to join us spiritually in the sukkah.

For the kabbalists, each of the Biblical guests are linked to the ‘sfirot,’ the hidden spiritual structures of God’s presence that provide guidance, influence and direction for all life.  Through Ushpizin, we invoke those spiritual qualities that add meaning to our lives as we welcome our spiritual guests. Through the custom of inviting spiritual guests into our sukkah, we are enacting two of the greatest values of our Jewish tradition – hospitality and reverence for ancestors.

As we gather in sukkot during this time of COVID-19, stay safe and healthy.  If you can, find a safe way to invite friends and family to visit.  Then, take a few moments to welcome the spirits of our relatives and ancestors into our celebrations.  We stand on their shoulders.  They have given us so much.

Shabbat Shalom and Hag Same’ach,

Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

Virtual Film Discussion: They Ain’t Ready for Me, October 14.  JCC Chicago's Social Justice Film Series presents a discussion of the film They Ain't Ready for Me.  The documentary shows how Tamar Manasseh, a black rabbinical student, is combating gun violence on the South Side of Chicago through her organization MASK, Mothers/Men Against Senseless Killings. In the film, Tamar addresses the challenges facing both the black and Jewish worlds. The story exists within the context of the larger issues that are playing out in today’s America – increasing racial tensions, rising inequality levels and a growing sense of atomization and alienation. They Ain’t Ready for Me explores the complex identity and motivations of an extraordinary person who is Jewish and black, and how these intersecting identities offer her a road map for addressing one of America’s most urgent crises. Register here to receive a link to view the film at home and a link for the virtual film discussion.
